Opening the car door, Avery slipped in. ''We need to leave here,'' Avery said urgently, feeling that this area would soon be in lockdown.
Lucas didn't ask why; he simply steered the car and zoomed off. After twenty minutes, police cars circled the area, putting it on lockdown in search of the suspect, unaware that they had already left.
Once they were far enough, Lucas stopped the car and faced Avery.
''What happened?'' he asked, watching her face turn pale. She quickly opened the door and vomited beside a tree. Lucas got out and rushed to her side, concern etched on his face.
He patted her back, feeling a sense of déjà vu as if he had comforted her this way before. He knew instantly that it was those people again.
He returned to the car and grabbed a bottle of water. When she was done, he handed it to her to rinse her mouth. ''Are you feeling better now?'' he asked, caressing her back softly.
