Chapter 70 - Chapter 70 The end of the siege.

After destroying the barrier the giant wolf fell again but it still had enough strength left to get up and approach the wall, focusing its attention on the group that killed its comrades and heavily injured it.

At that moment everyone on the wall knew that this was the end, if this beast destroyed a section of the wall then they would have no chance at all to defend the town since all the other beasts would use the breach to get inside and kill them all with their superior numbers alone.

In an act of desperation, everyone attacked the wolf creature but their attacks didn't even faze it.

The beast howled and stood on its hind legs ready to use its remaining front paw to shatter the wall when suddenly it was struck by a powerful Qi slash that sent it tumbling to the ground leaving a big cut on its abdomen.

Everyone was frozen at this sight, all the humans and the beasts were rooted in place after witnessing this scene.

Only a moment later did some cultivators regain their senses and looked in the direction the attack came from only to see a wall of cavalry standing a few hundred meters away and the imperial flag waving above them.

-Reinforcements.

They said in disbelief.

-The imperial army has arrived.

Seeing this the defenders once again started to shoot arrows one after the other killing as many beasts as they could and making sure that the wall was secure.

Paul also joined in along with the rest of the people around him when they got their senses back.

Just a moment ago they were sure that they were dead but by some miracle, the help arrived just in time.

This was just too much like a scene from a movie or a book but this time it was reality.

The imperial army also moved out and charged at the beasts with an unstoppable momentum.

The moment they clashed all the beasts in front of them were simply slaughtered.

The weakest solider of that army was at the minimum a second-stage cultivator and the stronger ones were stage four or even five cultivators.

However, the strongest of them all was the general leading the army as he was a stage seven expert and it was his attack that killed the last stage six beast preventing it from breaching the walls.

Seeing the imperial army charge the defenders stopped shooting not wanting to injure or kill the soldiers by accident.

Some beasts tried to fight the incoming army but they were quickly disposed of by the soldiers.

The stronger and a bit smarter beasts turned around and tried to escape especially when whatever controlled them disappeared.

The moment the imperial army arrived a pillar of golden light was seen for a moment in the forest that the beasts came from.

It didn't take long for the army to kill all the beasts that tried to fight and those that escaped were left alone for now since they were no longer a threat.

-Fei Fei what was that golden light just now?

Anna asked.

She saw her older sister's reaction once she saw the golden light.

When Fei Fei saw the light she was shocked and no one knew why because they had no idea what was that light.

-This was a realm transport spell Anna, and whoever used it was from a higher realm.

Fei Fei explained.

-Are you saying that this whole mess was organized by someone from the higher realm?

Paul asked when he heard their conversation.

-This is the most probable explanation and that golden light was most likely the culprit running away when his plans were foiled.

Also, this was not a simple realm transport, it was from at least the fourth world or higher.

Fei Fei said with a grim expression.

-But why the hell would they do something like this? If what you said to me before is correct then one of the guys from the fourth realm could destroy this whole town alone in a matter of minutes.

Paul asked as this whole thing had no sense.

Why raise a beast army and go for a few days-long siege when you can take the town alone in a few minutes?

-We may unfortunately never know since we don't have a clue who the culprit was.

Fei Fei said shaking her head slightly.

-One thing is for sure, the people from the higher realms don't regard those from lower realms as humans or cultivators but simply ants.

And from what I know this might have been just some kind of experiment or someone was just bored and decided to have fun in this way.

She said with a look of regret on her face as she was once the same, but her outlook changed the moment she had to come down here to survive.

-The truth is that they are more or less impossible to punish and even if someone reached their realm then there is no way to know who did this.

Fei Fei didn't like this one bit more than the other people around her but that was the truth and they had to live with it.

While they were talking the army finished mopping up the remaining beasts and was now gathering in front of the town's gate.

When they all gathered in a formation the general came to the front.

-Open the gates.

He shouted, immediately the guards opened the gate and the mayor along with the guard's captain and the elders came to greet Him.

Paul could not hear what they talked about but he was sure that the mayor and the rest were thanking the general for saving the town.

Soon all the defenders were replaced by soldiers and they could take some rest after the battle.

Everybody was too tired to even care that the army collected all the beast's corpses.

Most of the defenders simply went to sleep the moment they arrived back at their quarters.

Paul, Anna, and Fei Fei were no exception to that.

They woke up the next day and only then did they learn that there were over twenty towns that were attacked and dozens of villages as well.

Of them all only three towns managed to hold out and the villages were all destroyed with bearly any survivors left.

Nobody knew what the culprits were after but each time the army arrived there was a sudden pillar of golden light and the beasts started to run for their lives soon after.

The people who orchestrated this whole thing made sure not to leave any traces that could identify them in one case they even destroyed everything in a hundred-meter radius with fire magic to ensure nothing was left.

-Why would they be concerned about us finding out their identity?

It's not like we can just go up there and take revenge.

Paul asked when they were discussing the matter over a meal.

-There are only a few reasons that I can think of.

Fei Fei answered.

-They would not want anyone to spread the rumor of what they did since that could damage their reputation and a reputation is everything up there.

The other reason is that we might not be able to go there now but some people go up every so often and they don't want to find themselves dealing with someone's revenge if that happened.

But the most likely reason is that they do not want to deal with the imperial family in their realm as every emperor has a way to contact the emperors in the higher realm and this incident is more than enough to use this method and complain.

Of course, you need to find who the culprit is before you can even complain in the first place

so no suspects or evidence and you can't complain.

Fei Fei explained.

-So in other words we will never know who or why they did it.

Anna said.

-Unfortunately, that seems to be the case.

Paul confirmed.

-Well there is always a chance that we will learn about it when we go up there but that won't change much as it will take us at least a few years to reach that high.

Fei Fei said.

-Even if we found the culprits then what?

Paul asked.

-Since there is no proof then we can't even complain and if we attack them for revenge then we will end up being blamed instead.

He said with irritation in his voice.

The truth was that the best they could do was to survive this ordeal which they did and be happy with it.

-Well at least we can travel again since the beasts either ran away or have been wiped out by the army.

Anna said trying to change the subject.

-That's true and we will leave tomorrow morning for The Storm Wave City.

Paul made a decision.

-We were never supposed to stay here for this long and I want to go there to maybe finally have some peace to focus on our cultivation without worrying about a beast wave or a crazy woman from the upper realm.

He said with a hint of irritation.

-If you want to have peace then the best place would be wilderness, not a city.

Fei Fei said.

-Wilderness is also anything but peaceful.

Paul retorted.

-I plan to rent a house or a residence for a month or two and focus on breaking through to the second stage of both mana and Qi cultivation.

He explained his plans.

-It seems that there is something in this world hellbent on making that as difficult for you as possible.

Fei Fei said with a chuckle.

She heard the whole story from him directly and it seemed that there was always trouble wherever he went especially whenever he tried to increase his cultivation peacefully.

-Yes and to make matters worse I still don't know if that crazy woman from the Su clan didn't send someone back down to finish me off.

That's why I want to go to a big city and change my name for a while to make it harder for anyone to find me.

He said seriously.

-If that is your goal for now then I suggest moving directly to the Imperial capital since it's the biggest city around and with a new name, you won't be so easy to find.

Anna revealed her idea.

-Except that won't work since I'm almost sure that my father's family is in the imperial capital and I don't want to meet them anytime soon or at least until I'm strong enough to get my revenge.

Paul said with a dark expression on his face.

-Then the province capital it is.

Fei Fei said with a hint of a smile.

Paul just hoped to leave without any fuss and be on his way as soon as possible since he was sure that his name would become known to many people as soon as the people start traveling again.
