The cracks on the barrier grew with every moment but it still held the attacking beasts at bay for now allowing the humans to kill them with arrows and kill them they did.
The beasts were dropping like flies under the constant barrage of arrows unfortunately this was about to end when everyone saw a stage four beast charging the barrier, killing everything in its wake.
Many cultivators targeted it using the best arrows they had and even imbuing them with Qi and mana for good measure but this was no simple beast it was the Steel Buffalo which was extremely hard to kill thanks to its incredibly tough skin.
The beast was also the size of an elephant and charging with unstoppable momentum.
The moment it hit the barrier the whole thing shook and the cracks got even bigger but it held for now.
Seeing that, the beast retreated for another attempt ignoring the arrows as most of them simply bounced off of its body and the few that managed to pierce it only managed to anger it.
One of the cultivators even threw an incendiary bomb which landed on its body setting it ablaze but it was useless as the flames were not powerful enough to do any kind of damage to it.
The only thing that was good in this situation was that the Steel Buffalo charged disregarding other beasts and if they were in its way then they died.
Another hit brought the barrier to the brink of collapsing and there was no way to recharge it when it was constantly under the attack of the weaker beasts.
Everyone knew that the situation was critical and if the beast attacked again the barrier would be breached.
Seeing what was going on Paul asked a few cultivators to help him and slid down from the walls using the rope.
Seeing the beast charging again they stood right next to the barrier and took out long spears.
They waited until the buffalo could not stop or change direction anymore and stuck the back ends of the spears into the ground while getting the spearheads outside the barrier and braced for the impact.
Even if the barrier were breached, this beast had to die as one or two charges from it would also breach the walls.
Before the beast understood what the humans were planning it was too late and the spears impaled it penetrating its tough skin thanks to its momentum.
The cultivators were knocked back as the spears broke under the immense strength but it was enough as the beast tried to stop before the impact, lowering its speed and the spears also slowed it down by quite a bit before it impacted the barrier.
By some miracle, this was enough for the barrier to withstand the impact even though it was on the verge of collapsing.
The beast trashed on the ground for a few moments pushing the broken spears deeper and deeper into its body with every move until it finally died when one of the spears reached its heart and pierced it.
Paul and his companions didn't see that as the moment they got up they ran as fast as they could to the walls and started climbing the ropes that were tossed down to help them.
Once they were safely on the top, everyone who was helping them immediately resumed firing the arrows on the other beasts.
The battle raged on for another half an hour before the beasts finally managed to breach the barrier which they paid dearly for and what awaited them on the other side was not any better.
Once the barrier collapsed the mages could fire their spells at will which they did.
Everyone started to use everything they had to kill as many beasts as they could and buy time for the barrier to be reactivated.
They knew that if they held out long enough then they still had a chance to win this.
The first three lines of the beasts were almost annihilated with all the attacks coming their way in addition to the arrows and bombs.
But there were still more coming.
It looked like an endless tide of beasts was charging at the walls now but the first ones that reached the walls got a nasty surprise when the jars that were placed under the wall were broken blasting them with more shrapnel.
The defenders felt the wall shaking when the beasts charged at it but they had some more surprises in store for them.
First, everyone took out their spatial devices and dropped some big stones from them straight on the beasts under the wall, crushing many of them to death and injuring even more.
The next one was a few barrels of lamp oil that were emptied straight onto the incoming beasts before some incendiary bombs landed on them burning hundreds of beasts alive and blocking their access to the walls.
Unfortunately, the momentum of the beast tide pushed the frontlines straight into the fire until it was put out by the sheer number of corpses that piled up under the wall.
What was worse, some of the beasts started to climb the wall and soon there was close-quarters combat in some places while the rest of the defenders tried their best to keep the other beasts out.
Fei Fei switched her bow for her knives and protected Anna and a group of other archers while they were still shooting one arrow after the other despite their hands and backs hurting and the exhaustion they felt.
With Fei Fei to protect them they focused on the beasts that were still coming and let her deal with the ones that climbed the wall.
Every beast that got near them got instantly either stabbed to death or cut to ribbons by her flying knives.
Paul also switched the bow for a sword and killed any beast that got to the top of the wall while firing some fireballs to help the others with their fights.
Seeing the situation around him he knew that they were holding by a thread but there was still a chance for them to win this.
It took another half an hour of brutal fighting before the barrier got activated again cutting off the incoming beasts and all humans defending the walls focused solely on eliminating the ones inside the barrier.
Without any reinforcements, it only took around ten minutes for the beasts inside to be wiped out.
Unfortunately, the human forces suffered a lot of casualties before that happened.
Almost three hundred people died in combat while another five hundred were injured and unable to continue fighting for now.
All the healers had their hands full trying to heal as many people as they could, focusing on those who would die without healing magic.
While other people did what they could to patch up the rest the best they could.
There were some people who helped Paul with sewing the wounds previously and now they did the same thing, closing wounds and buying time for the injured.
While this was going on the people at the wall still fired arrows into the beasts despite their exhaustion, reducing their numbers with each passing moment.
After a few minutes, the beasts retreated, no longer being able to endure the constant rain of arrows while they were stuck at the barrier.
Once the beasts were outside of the archer's range they could finally stop shooting and most of them collapsed to the ground breathing heavily.
Only now did they figure out that it was almost evening and they were fighting for almost an entire day.
