Wherever you go there's always a part of the town everybody knows about, but that nobody wants to see. Where the tragedies are deeper, the ecstasies wilder, and the crime rate is higher than anywhere else. In LA, its name is Skid Row. And the events that happened there would go on to become the most terrifying in the history of the world. They all began one day in a run-down florist shop in the heart of the Row, Mushnick's.
In the back of the shop, Seymour Krelboyne is gathering pots for an order. With the pots in hand he walks to the door and trips over a hose, breaking every pot he had.
"Seymour!? Whatever in the world is going on back there??" An older gentleman calls out.
"Nothing, Mr. Mushnick!"
"You better not goof around, boy. One more screw up and you're gone!"
In the front of the shop, Mushnick is talking to an elderly lady draped in black.
"I'm so sorry, Mrs. Shiva, to hear about your loss. Will it be the usual?"
"Yes, yes, Mr. Mushnick. Some carnations would be great." She gets out through her sobbing.
Mushnick walks over to a beautiful young woman.
"Audrey, some carnations for Mrs. Shiva." He says
"Yes, Mr. Mushnick sir." Audrey says before heading into the back.
In the back Seymour is attempting to cut up 2 gladiolus to equal length. He cuts a large piece of one stem, puts the plant down, picks up the second, eyeballs where he should cut, cuts too much off, and repeat until he realizes he's cut too much off then he picks two more up.
Audrey grabs a handful of pink carnations and wraps them in paper.
"Seymour, would you like some help?"
"Oh, gee, I really appreciate it, Audrey, but I think I got it this time."
She left for the front to hand Mushnick the flowers and Seymour did not have it this time.
"Krelboyne! It does not take this long to cut two stems. Hurry up do not keep the good doctor waiting!!!"
Seymour is startled, jumps back, and falls into the shelf of pots, knocking them all down.
CRAKASH!!
"That's it. I'm done with him." Mushnick says under his breath. "Seymour! Out here now!!"
Seymour gets up and slowly goes to the front.
"Did you call for me, Mr. Mushnick?"
"No! I called J.D. Rockefeller!!" Mushnick says sarcastically. "This was the last straw, boy. Out now."
"But Mr. Mushnick..."
"Now! I can barely keep the lights on and you go and waste plants and you break pots. I cannot afford to keep you around when you give me nothing but broken promises and product."
"Gee... I didn't mean it, sir."
"Mr. Mushnick, sir!" Audrey calls out. "Seymour may have just what you need to end the money problems here for good!"
"What is she talking about Krelboyne?"
"Seymour has a strange plant he's been growing in secret! I've never seen anything like it before."
"Fine, fine." Mushnick says sighing. "Go grab the plant. But then, you're out, boy."
Seymour runs into the back of the shop, grabs a strange plant in a coffee can with a bulb that looks almost like a mouth, and runs back to the front almost tripping over the hose yet again.
"Here it is, sir!"
"Now where did you find such a... weird looking plant?" Mushnick asks.
"There's a Japanese gardener on Central Avenue I like going to because he sometimes has weird and exotic plants. Anyways, he found the seeds with an order he got from a farm next to a waste treatment place. Neither of us could figure out what it is but I knew I had to have it."
"So, it doesn't have a name?"
"Well... I might have given it one..."
"And it is?"
"Audrey Junior."
"You named it after me???" Audrey asks in complete shock and excitement.
"Well, if you're ok with it..." Seymour says sheepishly
Audrey makes an extremely high pitched squeal and hugs Seymour.
"Oh, great, well at least one of us is happy. Now out Seymour!" Shouts Mushnick.
"Mr. Mushnick, sir, please let Seymour stay. We can put Audrey Junior in the window and it'll attract people!"
"If I allow that it won't be called 'Audrey Junior' for long... no no no. It will be called 'Mushnick's Folly" because it will be the complete downfall of this business."
"The girl is right you know." Says Mrs. Shiva. "My cousin, he had a flower shop that had a wall of poison ivy and people went in just to look at it and bought flowers."
"Did it make him rich?" Asks Mushnick.
"No... he ended up scratching himself to death. But it doesn't look dangerous to me."
"Fine. You have one week. If customers and profits do not go up by then both you and the plant are out of here, Krelboyne. Do you understand?"
"Loud and clear sir!" Yells Seymour.
Audrey Junior starts to wilt.
"Go, go, go into the back and get that plant healthy. If it dies, you won't be here even a week."
Later in the night, Seymour is still up trying to get Junior to get better. No amount of plant food, no amount of water, no amount of light, and no type of dirt seems to be helping any. There's a large potted plant on the table, beside Audrey Junior, and Seymour attempts to move it out of the way to give him more space to work. He accidentally cuts his finger on the razor sharp leaves. Audrey Junior's bulb begins to open up.
"Damn plant, damn blood, damn Audrey Junior not getting better."
Seymour shakes his hand to stop the pain, flinging drops of blood everywhere and one lands in the bulb. Like something out of a dream, or possibly a nightmare, Audrey Junior begins to speak.Â
"F-f-f-feed... m-m-me..."
