Chapter 31 - The Broken Past

CHAPTER 31

( Xavie, Desmond and Dami are still seated together in the Coffee shop)

Desmond's POV

Desmond leaned in, his voice low. "And make your father the richest man in the world." I nodded again. "Yes. The water factory would have given your father control over the global water supply. He would have been able to dictate who got water and who didn't." Xavier's face was pale. "And Mr. Anthonio and the Counselor...they wanted to stop him?" I nodded grimly. "Yes. They wanted to take the project for themselves, to use it for their own gain. And they were willing to kill to get it."

Xavier's eyes flashed with anger. "I won't let them get away with it." I placed a hand on his shoulder. "We'll get to the bottom of this, Xavier. I promise."

(Dami's POV)

As we continued to discuss the water factory, I noticed a figure lingering in the corner of the coffee shop. At first, I thought it was just another patron, but as I glanced over again, I realized they were trying to listen in on our conversation. I nudged Desmond and nodded discreetly towards the figure. He followed my gaze and frowned. Xavier, oblivious to the potential danger, continued to ask questions. "So, how were they planning to stop my father?" The figure took a step closer, trying to blend in with the other customers. I could see the glint of a earpiece in their ear, and my instincts told me we were in trouble. "Xavier, we need to go," I said abruptly, standing up.

Desmond and Xavier exchanged confused glances, but I didn't have time to explain. I quickly gathered our belongings and ushered them out of the coffee shop. As we stepped onto the sidewalk, I glanced back to see the figure following us, their eyes locked on Xavier.

(Xavier's POV)

I couldn't believe what was happening. One minute we were discussing my father's water factory project, and the next we were running for our lives. Dami floored it, speeding through the city streets in his sleek black car. Desmond was navigating, shouting directions as we weaved through traffic. I looked back, seeing the spy's car gaining on us. My heart raced as I realized we were in grave danger. "Hold on!" Dami yelled, taking a sharp turn. I gripped the seat as the car fishtailed, tires screeching. The spy's car was still behind us, but we were gaining distance. Desmond pointed ahead. "Take the highway!" Dami nodded, speeding onto the highway. We merged with the traffic, but the spy was still hot on our heels.

I felt a surge of adrenaline as Dami took the car up to 120 miles per hour. We were flying down the highway, dodging cars and trucks. Suddenly, Dami swerved, taking an exit at the last second. The spy's car missed the turn, giving us a small lead. We drove in silence for a few minutes, the only sound being the hum of the engine and the rustling of leaves as we wound through the forest. Finally, Dami spoke up. "I think we lost them." Desmond nodded, looking around cautiously. "Yeah, we should be safe here."

I breathed a sigh of relief as Dami pulled over, parking the car in a small clearing. We were surrounded by tall trees, their leaves a vibrant green. Dami pulled out his phone, dialing a number. "I'm calling for backup. We'll get you home safely, Xavier." I nodded, still trying to process everything that had happened. Desmond got out of the car, scanning our surroundings. "We'll wait here until the team arrives."

I followed him out, stretching my legs. The forest was peaceful, a stark contrast to the danger we had just faced. Dami joined us, phone still in hand. "They'll be here in 20 minutes. We'll get you back home, Xavier. You'll be safe." I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Dami and Desmond. They had risked their lives to protect me. As we waited, I couldn't help but wonder what other dangers lay ahead. But for now, I was safe. And that's all that mattered.

Desmond's POV

I sat in the backseat of the car, laptop open as I hacked into the coffee shop's CCTV system. Dami and Xavier were keeping watch, waiting for our backup to arrive. After a few minutes of typing away, I finally gained access to the footage. I rewound the tape, finding the moment when the spy first appeared. I zoomed in on his face, running it through a facial recognition program. The results came back quickly - his name was Victor, a known associate of Cassandra.

My heart sank. We had thought we'd taken her down, but it seemed she was still pulling the strings from behind the scenes. I kept digging, finding more footage of Victor and his team. They were all connected to Cassandra, and it seemed they'd been tracking Xavier for weeks. I felt a chill run down my spine. We'd thought we'd saved Xavier, but it seemed the evil was far from over. "Cassandra's back," I said grimly, looking up at Dami and Xavier. "And she's not going down without a fight."

Dami's face darkened. "We'll take her down, Desmond. Again." Xavier's eyes narrowed. "I'm not going to let her win. I'm going to take her down myself."

Desmond's POV

I turned my laptop towards Dami and Xavier, showing them the footage of Victor. "This is the guy who's been tracking us. His name is Victor, and he's a known associate of Cassandra." Dami's eyes narrowed. "Where is he now?" I pulled up a map, showing Victor's current location. "He's about 5 miles from here, heading towards the city." Xavier's eyes widened. "We can't let him get away." I nodded. "Agreed. But we also need to get you home safely. That's why I think we should follow the forest path. It's riskier, but it'll give us a better chance of shaking Victor and his team." Dami nodded. "I agree. Let's move out."

We quickly gathered our gear and set off into the forest, following a narrow dirt path. I led the way, keeping an eye on Victor's location. As we walked, the trees grew closer together, casting deep shadows that made it difficult to see. I could feel eyes watching us, and I knew we weren't alone. Suddenly, I heard a twig snap behind us. I spun around, gun drawn. "Get down!" I whispered, pushing Xavier and Dami to the ground.

Dami's POV

I hit the ground, my heart racing as I pulled Xavier and Desmond into the underbrush. We lay there, surrounded by twigs and leaves, holding our breath. The sound of footsteps echoed through the forest, growing louder with each passing second. I could feel Xavier's eyes on me, wide with fear. Suddenly, a hail of bullets ripped through the trees, sending splinters flying everywhere. I returned fire, my gun trained on the attackers.

Xavier layed in among the shrubs as we tried to keep him covered, my gun firing in tandem as we laid down a withering field of fire.
