She turned to look at Jake, her countenance bland and serene. In a strange voice, she murmured, "I'm sorry," even though it was the one he had been waiting so long to hear.
"Do I know you?" Laura asked in confusion.
"Jake, let me introduce you to Laura Garcia," Jeb interjected and began in a proud tone, briefly introducing the person who had gradually entered his life.
Jake hardly heard anything Jeb said. He continued to stare at Laura Garcia. Her face, her mannerisms, how she moved—all of it was too familiar to ignore the name.
Emily appeared to him in the flesh as if she had come back from the grave. Jake just gazed at her. There was a woman in front of him who did not remember him. Not a recollection of their life together, of Aiden, of their love.
In a way, she was Emily, but she wasn't. It felt like a lightning strike to Jake.
