Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Trials of the Gods

The heroes stood at the base of the enormous World Tree, Yggdrasil, with its roots anchored deep into the underworld and its branches reaching beyond the skies, as the wind howled around them. The Bifrost, a rainbow bridge that connected worlds, shimmered faintly in the sky above them. However, their voyage into the realm of the divine was far from over.

Eira cast a quick glance up at the massive tree, its bark aglow with old runes. "This is the end," she muttered. "The core of all that exists"

Standing next to her, Alaric clenched his sword while glancing out over the horizon. He said, "The gods won't make this easy for us." "They never succeed."

With a sly smile, Lysandra adjusted her leather belt, which was adorned with a variety of daggers. Now, without a little difficulty, what would life be like? In addition, I've always desired to pilfer something from a deity.

The banished Norse deity Tyr remained silent. He was more aware than anybody else of how dangerous the path ahead would be. The Sword of Odin, the Heart of Tiamat, and the Bow of Hou Yi—the treasures they sought—were more than just objects. They were the very essence of gods, each protected by age-old rites meant to prove the merit of whomever ventured to claim them.

Trial #1: The Odin Sword

The Aesir's kingdom of Asgard, where the Sword of Odin was rumored to be buried, was the group's first stop. With Tyr's help, they crossed the Bifrost and entered the golden halls of Valhalla. However, rather than the opulent reception rooms they had anticipated, they discovered themselves in a barren wasteland, the once-powerful metropolis fallen to ruins.

"What took place here?" With a shaky voice, Eira questioned.

Tyr's face became serious. Ragnarok. The gods' demise. The result is what you see.

A thunderous voice resounded through the deserted corridors before they could take in the devastation all around them. "Those who are worthy to wield the power of Odin may pass."

A tall, silver-armored creature came out of the shadows. Though his face was hidden, it was clear that Heimdall, the defender of Asgard and keeper of the Bifrost, was emanating energy.

Heimdall said, "You must face the trial of foresight in order to claim the sword." "You have to choose to move forward even though you can see the future."

A whirling fog surrounded the gathering, showing them images of their own futures one by one.

Eira saw her hands aflame, her power exploding, and a world enveloped in flames. Alaric imagined himself standing over the remains of his slain allies, doomed to an endless existence devoid of hope. With people she believed to be friends having deceived her, Lysandra felt abandoned. Tyr saw the restoration of Asgard, but in his absence, his name was lost to history.

The sights they saw broke their spirits, but Eira took a deep breath and held her pendant. With a determined tone, she stated, "The future is uncertain." "But we have to mold it to fit us."

Her bravery inspired the others, and they all went on to pass Heimdall's exam. In an instant of light, the fog parted, and the Sword of Odin—encased in stone—was in front of them. Tyr stepped closer to it in awe and hesitated a bit before pulling out the sword.

The initial trial was finished.

Trial No. 2: Tiamat's Heart

The next stop was the ancient goddess of chaos, Tiamat, dormant in the depths of the primordial ocean. The power of creation itself was rumored to reside in her heart, a dazzling crimson jewel.

Upon entering the depths of the water, they saw a colossal vortex, tumbling with eerie intensity. The surrounding marine life became bigger and more vicious, their eyes taking on an unusual shine. A gigantic snake curled around a brilliant heart at the center of the vortex.

Assandra She rolled her eyes. It is, of course, a gigantic snake. Why do snakes always appear?

Tyr moaned. That isn't your typical snake. That's Leviathan, the protector of Tiamat.

They had to confront their darkest fears during the chaos testing because Tiamat's heart would succumb to those who welcomed the unknown. With every one of them having to face their own evil, Leviathan sprang for them.

Following her engulfment by the snake, Eira dreamed that she was trapped inside its stomach, her unbridled fire devouring everything that was important to her. Alaric battled the ghosts of the people he had murdered in combat, accusing him of his transgressions with their eerie faces. Reliving the moment when she betrayed her family and saw them die was forced upon Lysandra as a result of her decisions.

But they each found power in the tumult. Eira came to see that while though her power may be harmful, it could also be a protective force. Alaric acknowledged that he could not change the past, but he could make the decision to struggle for a brighter future. Lysandra learned to forgive herself and accept that her history did not determine who she was at that moment.

Upon their return from their ordeal, they found Leviathan had vanished and the Heart of Tiamat, throbbing with the force of creation, in front of them. Feeling its warmth run through her veins, Eira stretched out and grasped the heart.

Trial Three: Hou Yi's Bow

They faced Hou Yi, the fabled archer who shot down nine suns to save them, in the sky during their last test, the globe from going up in flames. Said to never miss, his bow was hidden on the highest mountain, under the watchful eyes of the fallen sun's ghosts.

The heroes had to go through a maze of heavenly fire in order to pass the accuracy test, where a single mistake may result in their destruction. Waves of blinding light and searing heat besieged them as they ascended the mountain, the setting sun trying their willpower.

Hou Yi personally emerged at the top, bow raised. "You must demonstrate your true aim with your heart as well as with arrows in order to claim this weapon."

The heroes received a bow and a single arrow one by one. Their mission was uncomplicated: strike the ninth sun's heart, which was still blazing in the sky.

The arrow of Alaric soared wide, remorse clouding his heart. Although Lysandra's arrow found its target, she hesitated, her aim shaky due to residual misgivings. Once a god of battle, Tyr discovered humility to be his strength, but even that didn't work out.

At last, Eira steadied her hands and stepped in front of the bow. She recalled all that they had battled for: the planet, her friends, and her community. She exhaled deeply and let go of the arrow. It shot across the sky and landed perfectly squarely in the center of the sun.

Hou Yi gave an encouraging nod, and Eira took possession of the bow.

The Trials Are Over

The gang was on the cusp of destiny, bearing the Sword of Odin, the Heart of Tiamat, and the Bow of Hou Yi. However, the gods were not done with them yet, for darkness was gathering over the horizon as they dropped from the skies, signaling that the true struggle was still to come.
