Chapter 15 - Fragment 6 Time continues to flow

The wind whipped across the cliffside, carrying with it the scent of the newly transformed land. I stood on the edge, looking out over the strange, crystalline landscape, where jagged Aether crystals jutted out from the earth like teeth. The ground below shimmered with residual energy from Tiamat's Cry, the once familiar world now twisted by the power I had unleashed. Every day, new phenomena emerged—fields of glowing flowers that hummed with Aether, rivers of shimmering light that wound through the terrain, and creatures born of pure energy, drifting through the air like shadows.

Its been 3 years now and this was the world now. A world forever changed by the rain of Animara.

And in the months since that fateful battle, I had changed too. I had to. Nico was gone, vanished into the Void with Alesta and Gritta, leaving a hollow in my chest that I couldn't fill. I could feel him out there, somewhere in the shadows, his presence like a distant storm. The thought of our next encounter weighed on me. I knew it was inevitable—our fates were intertwined, and when we met again, the world would be caught in the crossfire.

I sighed, running a hand through my hair, feeling the ever-present pulse of power beneath my skin. Kien hovered beside me, his glow steady and quiet. He had become more than just an ally—he was a part of me now. His voice, calm and ancient, echoed in my mind, a constant reminder of the forces at play.

"The world is shifting, Lucian," Kien said, his tone thoughtful. "The power you unleashed has awakened forces older than time itself. And the Void... it's more than just a force of destruction. Its ambitions reach beyond this world, into realms you've only begun to understand."

I clenched my fists, the weight of responsibility pressing down on me. I had taken on the mantle of a leader more fully now. The Wave Riders looked to me for guidance, and though I didn't feel ready, I couldn't afford to falter. The Rift Nexus had triggered something—a cascade of changes across the continent, and with Nico missing, it felt like everything was teetering on the edge.

The land below, once thriving with life, was now a scarred battleground, but from that destruction came something new. Strange, radiant creatures moved through the trees, born from the Aetheric energy that had permeated the soil. The environment wasn't just changing—it was evolving, growing more alien by the day.

I wasn't the only one who had felt the weight of these changes. Lilith, Vallen, and Rose were each dealing with their own transformations. We trained separately now, each of us grappling with the powers we had awakened, preparing for the inevitable conflict with the Void. The once tight-knit group had drifted apart, but our bond remained, forged in battle and blood. We were all waiting—for the next move, for the next confrontation.

But that didn't stop the rift between Nico and me from growing. The last time I saw him, he was consumed by the Void, his power spiraling out of control. And yet, part of me still believed he was in there, somewhere, struggling to break free. But the next time we met, would it even matter? Would I be able to reach him, or would the Void take him completely?

A chill ran down my spine at the thought.

As I stood on the cliff, the wind carrying whispers of the world below, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was coming—something bigger than any of us had anticipated.

Kien's voice interrupted my thoughts again. "You've felt it, haven't you? The stirrings of ancient forces... powers that have remained dormant for eons."

I nodded slowly. "It's more than just the Void," I said quietly. "There's something else... something waking up."

Kien floated closer, his glow dimming as if the thought troubled him. "The Void seeks to consume, to spread across realms. But it's not the only force at play. The energy you unleashed with Tiamat's Cry—there are entities tied to that power, ancient gods and beings beyond mortal comprehension. Hecate, Helios, Poseidon... they've all been waiting, watching. And now, they stir."

Lilith, Vallen, and even myself—each of us had been touched by these ancient forces. I could feel it in my bones, a pull toward something greater. Lilith had been plagued by visions, her connection to Hecate growing stronger with every passing day. I'd seen her training in secret, her psychic abilities expanding, her control over shadow and illusion becoming more refined. And in her eyes, I could see the future she couldn't yet accept: the Avatar of Hecate, goddess of magic and crossroads.

Vallen had changed too, though in different ways. Since his awakening, his body had become a conduit for fire—pure, destructive fire, more powerful than anything I'd seen before. He hid it well, but I knew the truth. His lungs burned with solar power, his heart beat with the fury of a thousand suns. The signs were all there—he was on the path to becoming the god of the Sun and Fire, though he fought it every step of the way.

And me... the Animara had marked me more deeply than I could admit. I could feel the call of the Phantasmal Sea, the endless depths that pulled at my soul. It wasn't just water or Aether—it was something far older, far more dangerous. I was becoming the Harbinger of the Sea and Phantasms, though what that meant, I didn't yet know.

The future was terrifying. But it was also thrilling.

As I stared out over the ever-changing landscape, I knew that this was only the beginning. The Void's influence was growing, spreading like a cancer across the world. And somewhere, out there, Nico was caught in the middle of it. There had been whispers—rumors of a dark figure manipulating events from the shadows, sightings of someone who matched Nico's description. But was it really him?

The thought haunted me.

Kien drifted closer, his voice cutting through the wind. "You know it's only a matter of time before you face him again."

I nodded, my jaw clenched. "Yeah," I whispered. "But will he be the same Nico I once knew? Or just another pawn of the Void?"

The thought of that final confrontation gnawed at me. I could feel the storm brewing, the clash between us inevitable. It wasn't just about us anymore—it was about the world. The power we wielded had the potential to shape the future, for better or worse. And when Nico and I met again, that future would be decided.

I looked down at the land below, the twisted Aether crystals shimmering in the fading light. The world had already been changed by our actions, but the real battle hadn't even begun.

In the distance, something flickered—just at the edge of my vision. A shadow, barely noticeable, but unmistakable.

I froze, my heart pounding in my chest.

"Nico..." I whispered, my eyes narrowing. I could feel it. His presence, faint but growing stronger, like the calm before a storm.

Kien's voice was sharp in my mind. "Lucian, be careful."

I took a step forward, the weight of everything pressing down on me. Was it really him? Or was this another trick of the Void?

I didn't know.

But one thing was clear—the next time we met, everything would change.

And there would be no going back.

The wind howled as I leaped from the cliff's edge, the world beneath me blurred in streaks of vibrant colors—Aether crystals gleaming, their twisted forms catching the last light of the setting sun. My body moved instinctively, the Animara within me pulsing with power as I searched for the source of the energy I had sensed moments ago. Nico. His presence was faint but unmistakable. I had to find him.

But as quickly as it came, the energy vanished, slipping through my grasp like water through my fingers. I landed softly, my heart pounding, frustration building inside me. Was it really him, or just another trick of the Void? Either way, the encounter left me on edge.

I scanned the landscape, but the world remained still, eerily quiet, as if it too was waiting for something. My senses tingled, and for a moment, I thought I heard his voice—Nico's, distant yet familiar, calling to me from the shadows. But it was gone just as fast, leaving me alone with my thoughts and doubts.

I let out a breath, pushing the frustration aside. There was no use dwelling on it now. There would be a time to face Nico again, but until then, I had to stay sharp. I turned my back to the cliff and made my way back to the training grounds, where the remnants of Tiamat's Cry still twisted the land into strange, surreal shapes.

Hours passed as I trained, pushing my body and spirit to their limits, refining the techniques I'd honed over the last three years. My movements were fluid, each strike and spell perfectly in sync with the Animara that coursed through my veins. Kien was silent, observing my progress as I worked to master the power that had once nearly destroyed me.

But even as I trained, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was coming—something that would test not only me but the entire world. And I wasn't ready. Not yet.

After finishing my session, I cleaned up and headed back to the Vermillion Pheasant's base. The air in New Genesis City was thick with activity, the city brimming with life and energy despite the chaos that had swept across the world. Buildings towered above, their sleek forms illuminated by the glow of Aether technology that had evolved rapidly since the rain of Animara. The city was a beacon of hope amidst a world struggling to adapt.

As I approached the base, I spotted Rose waiting for me at the entrance. Her presence was commanding as ever, her rejuvenated form practically glowing with vitality. It was hard to believe that she was the same woman who had fought beside me three years ago—now she looked a decade younger, her strength undeniable.

She gave me a curt nod as I approached. "Lucian, come inside. There's a lot to discuss."

I followed her into her office, a space filled with maps, reports, and screens displaying various territories and syndicate affairs. She motioned for me to sit, her expression serious as she organized the data in front of her.

"We've made considerable progress over the last few months," Rose began, her tone brisk. "Our syndicate has grown, and we've established a strong foothold in the newly transformed regions, but the world is still in turmoil. The local economy is in a precarious state."

I leaned forward, listening intently.

"The regions affected by the Animara rain are experiencing massive disruptions. Trade routes have been rerouted, resources are scarce, and the influx of Aether energy has caused several unforeseen phenomena. We're working to understand the demographics of those affected—who's migrating, who's staying, and which areas are the most vulnerable."

She paused, flipping through several reports. "We've been monitoring the external forces influencing these shifts. It's not just the environment. There's a rising tension among the syndicates, and the emergence of new species and Phantasms has only made things worse. You need to understand the full scope of this before we make any decisions."

Rose's expression darkened slightly as she continued. "We've also been collecting financial information on potential investment opportunities in the areas most affected. The Animara has reshaped the land, and with it, new opportunities are arising. We're looking at how we can utilize these changes to strengthen our position, but it's a delicate balancing act."

I nodded, absorbing the information. Everything was changing, and it wasn't just about power anymore. It was about survival—how to navigate the chaos and come out on top. But there was more.

Rose shifted in her seat. "Now, about the world itself..."

I felt a shift in the air as she leaned forward. "Lucian, the world's class system has evolved."

The changes to the world had affected more than just the landscape—our very way of fighting had transformed. Rose laid out the details, each class now redefined by the new elemental logic and their synergy with the Aether.

Strikers were the front-line warriors, specialists in direct combat. They harnessed raw power, delivering devastating blows through physical force and elemental might. Fire, Earth, and Energy Aether Users dominated this class, their explosive techniques reshaping battlefields in seconds.

Defenders had become the shields of the battlefield. Masters of fortification, they used Earth, Water, and Void Aether to create impenetrable barriers, healing allies while absorbing damage. They were the unbreakable line in the face of overwhelming odds.

Rangers were the sharp-eyed hunters of the sky and ground. Air, Fire, and Energy Aether made them masters of ranged combat, their precision unmatched as they struck from afar, manipulating the environment to maintain control.

Supporters played an essential role, using Life, Water, and Psychic Aether to enhance their allies, heal, and control the flow of battle. Their ability to buff and debuff made them indispensable in prolonged engagements.

Mages were the versatile spellcasters, wielding Quantum, Void, and Psychic Aether to perform devastating spells, summon creatures, and manipulate reality itself. They filled multiple roles, making them unpredictable and dangerous.

Summoners brought forth creatures and constructs, overwhelming enemies with numbers or powerful allies. Life, Energy, and Void Aether allowed them to control entire armies of summoned beings, dominating the battlefield.

Tacticians manipulated the battlefield from afar, using Quantum, Psychic, and Earth Aether to set traps, alter the terrain, and outmaneuver opponents. They were the commanders, ensuring victory through strategy.

As Rose finished, I felt a deep understanding of the world's new order. Every Artist was now categorized and ranked, their abilities honed to fit their class, and the power scale had shifted.

"The Class System isn't the only new discovery," Rose continued. "We've also made significant advancements in understanding elemental logic."

The Fire Aether users now manipulated elements like Hydrogen and Helium, tapping into the raw power of nuclear fusion. Water Aether users had learned to control not just water, but its properties, manipulating salinity and pH. Earth Aether users could now tap into minerals like Iron and Carbon, while Air Aether users manipulated gases such as Nitrogen and Oxygen. Every element had become a tool, and every Artist now wielded their power with a precision that could reshape the battlefield.

The Void Aether users had discovered exotic elements like Osmium, granting them control over gravity itself. Life Aether users could accelerate biological processes, speeding up evolution, while Psychic Aether users tapped into elements affecting neural impulses.

And then there were the Quantum Aether users—able to manipulate the very fabric of reality, tapping into the quantum nature of Carbon and Silicon. They controlled the unseeable, making them some of the most dangerous beings alive.

Rose's eyes met mine. "There's more. The ranking system has been revamped. Every Artist and Phantasm is now ranked from E to SSS, and new species have emerged from other dimensions. Elves, Celestials, Dragons, and even Demons—all have been recorded."

I could feel the weight of everything pressing down on me. The world wasn't just evolving—it was transforming into something entirely new. And amidst all of this, the Phantasmal Sea had become the key to it all, the wellspring of Aether and power.

Rose wasn't done yet. "The PS, as we've started calling it, is still being studied. Its potential is vast. It's not just the source of Aether—it's the source of all forms, all potential. Every evolution, every ascension—it all stems from the Phantasmal Sea."

She went on to explain the Evolution and Ascension System, how beings could evolve by mastering Aether, overcoming karmic trials, and ascending to higher forms. From humans becoming saints to dragons reaching their elder stages, the world was on the brink of something monumental.

I sat there, letting it all sink in. This was the new world. One shaped by the Animara, by power, and by the unknown.

Rose leaned back, her expression softening. "Lucian, we're heading to the Vesperian Arts Academy in a few days. It's where everything will begin again. It's time for you to reunite with Lilith and Vallen. Three years is long enough."

A chill ran down my spine as the future loomed before me. The world was changing faster than I could comprehend, but I knew one thing:

The next chapter of our lives was about to begin.

And as I walked out of Rose's office, the weight of the world on my shoulders, I knew that the next confrontation with Nico would decide more than just our fates.

It would decide the fate of everything.
