Chapter 4: Future Chances?
It was a dark alley, where not many cars passed by.
"Little boy," a raspy voice called out.
I looked around and saw an old man sitting under a torn awning, with a small carpet laid out in front of him. He had some eggs left to sell, sitting in neat rows on the ground.
I walked up to the old man and spoke, "Hey, old man. Need some help? What's up?"
The old man looked at me with tired eyes and replied, "Just a few eggs left, boy. I'll give you 70% off if you buy all of them."
There were almost 15 racks, each holding a dozen eggs.
"That's a lot of eggs," I thought. "My sister and brothers will have a feast tomorrow, and today too… just like the old times."
There were about 60 kids living in our orphanage, plus the staff. This could be enough to feed everyone.
"Okay, old man. I'll buy them. Here, take 1,000 yuan," I said, handing him the money. "Do you need help packing? I'm headed your way."
After buying the eggs and helping him pack up, we walked to the old man's house. As we reached his door, he turned to me.
"Little boy," he called out again, this time with a different tone in his voice.
"Uh...?" I responded, a bit confused.
He looked at me with a mysterious gaze. "You have luck on your side. I'm a fortune teller. Mark my words. Three days from now, go to the nearest forest."
His words hung in the air, leaving me with a sense of unease and curiosity.
