Chapter 13 - Preparations

Back at the manor, the tension from the encounter in the alley still lingered in the air. Garnetta could feel it in the way Raphael moved—his usually calm demeanor now tinged with a quiet urgency. The manor, which had once felt like a sanctuary, now seemed more like a fortress, its walls holding back the dangers of the world outside.

As they stepped into the study, Raphael went straight to the large map spread across the desk, his fingers tracing the boundaries of various territories. Garnetta watched him closely, noting the furrow in his brow as he considered their next move.

"We can't stay here much longer," Raphael finally said, his voice heavy with the weight of the decision. "The Volturi have ears everywhere, and if word of your abilities reaches them, they will come for you."

Garnetta felt a chill run down her spine at the mention of the Volturi. She had heard stories of their power, their ruthlessness in maintaining the laws of the vampire world. The thought of being on their radar was terrifying, but she also felt a growing determination to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

"What do we do?" she asked, her voice steady despite the turmoil in her mind.

Raphael looked up at her, his expression softening slightly. "We prepare, ma chère. We will leave France, but not without ensuring that you are ready for whatever may come. Your training must continue, but now with a new focus—defense."

Garnetta nodded, her resolve hardening. "I understand. I'm ready to do whatever it takes."

Raphael gave her a small, approving smile. "Good. Then we will begin immediately."

He moved to a nearby cabinet and retrieved a set of small wooden blocks, each one intricately carved with symbols that Garnetta didn't recognize. He placed them on the desk in a precise arrangement, creating a circle with a single block in the center.

"This is a focus exercise," Raphael explained. "The symbols on these blocks represent different aspects of power—strength, speed, perception, control. The goal is to use your abilities to create a protective barrier, one that can shield you from harm. This is a skill that will be essential if you are ever confronted by a threat you cannot escape."

Garnetta stepped closer, examining the blocks with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. "How do I begin?"

"Focus on the center block," Raphael instructed. "Visualize the barrier forming around it, a wall of briar roses that can repel any attack. Use the surrounding blocks to amplify the power of the barrier, drawing strength from each symbol."

Garnetta closed her eyes, taking a deep breath to steady herself. She reached out with her senses, feeling the energy in the room, the connection between herself and the natural world. The amulet around her neck pulsed faintly, a steady reminder of the power within her.

Slowly, she extended her hand toward the center block, visualizing the roses in her mind—dark, thorny, and impenetrable. She imagined them growing from the ground, their stems twisting together to form a dense wall around the block. As she focused, she could feel the energy shifting, the power flowing through her, guided by her will.

The air in the room grew thick with tension as Garnetta concentrated on the task at hand. The symbols on the surrounding blocks seemed to glow faintly, their power amplifying the barrier she was creating. The roses materialized in her mind, their sharp thorns bristling with the promise of protection.

With a final push of will, Garnetta opened her eyes. The room was unchanged, but she could feel the barrier in place, a shimmering force that surrounded the center block. It wasn't visible, but she knew it was there, a testament to her growing control.

Raphael stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the center block. He reached out and gently tapped the barrier with his hand. To Garnetta's surprise, the air around the block shimmered, the outline of the barrier briefly visible as it repelled Raphael's touch.

"Well done," Raphael said, a note of pride in his voice. "You are learning quickly, Garnetta. This barrier will serve you well, but remember, it is only as strong as your will. The more you practice, the more resilient it will become."

Garnetta allowed herself a small smile, the satisfaction of her success warming her from within. She had done it—she had created a protective barrier, a tangible manifestation of her power and control. But she knew this was just the beginning. There was still much more to learn, and the dangers they faced were growing by the day.

"Thank you, Raphael," she said, her voice filled with gratitude. "I couldn't have done this without your guidance."

Raphael returned her smile, though there was a hint of concern in his eyes. "You have great potential, ma chère, but the road ahead will not be easy. We must remain vigilant, always prepared for what may come. The Volturi are not to be underestimated."

Garnetta nodded, the gravity of the situation sinking in. She had known from the start that her journey would be difficult, but now the stakes were higher than ever. The Volturi were a force to be reckoned with, and if they decided to come after her, she would need all the strength and control she could muster.

"We'll be ready," Garnetta said with quiet determination.

Raphael studied her for a moment, then nodded in agreement. "Yes, we will. Now, let's continue your training. There is much more to learn, and time is not on our side."

They spent the rest of the night in the training chamber, honing Garnetta's skills, pushing her limits. Each exercise was more challenging than the last, but Garnetta faced them with unwavering resolve. She could feel herself growing stronger, more in control of her powers with each passing hour.

By the time dawn approached, Garnetta was exhausted but satisfied. She had made significant progress, but she knew there was still a long way to go. The looming threat of the Volturi cast a shadow over her thoughts, but she refused to let fear control her. She would be ready, no matter what.

As they returned to the manor, Raphael placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You have done well, Garnetta. Rest now. We will continue tomorrow."

Garnetta nodded, feeling the weight of exhaustion settle over her. "Thank you, Raphael. I'll see you in the evening."

With a final, reassuring smile, Raphael left her at the door to her room. Garnetta stepped inside, the warmth and familiarity of the space offering a small comfort. She knew that the days ahead would be difficult, but she was ready to face them head-on.

As she settled into bed, the events of the night replayed in her mind—the encounter with the nomadic vampires, the warning about the Volturi, the progress she had made in her training. The road ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear—she was on the path to becoming something truly extraordinary.

With that thought in mind, Garnetta allowed herself to drift into a deep, dreamless sleep, her body and mind readying themselves for the challenges that awaited.
