Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: First Encounter

A Glimmer of Hope

For hours, Jax Ryker had been on his way across the desolate wasteland, his legs hurting from the long trip. The temperature dropped as the sun sank; the heavens were a dark gray. Every stride he took seemed to echo the spooky peace of the hard terrain. A little gleam of light in the distance, which may offer cover and protection, kept him moving.

The light emanated from a historic warehouse, silhouetted against the evening sky. Though it seemed abandoned and run-down, after several hours of searching, it was a welcome sight. Jax's senses were on sharp alert for possible hazards, so he walked toward the warehouse with a mix of hope and caution.

Jax pushed open the warehouse door, which creased. Though it was warmer than outdoors, the interior air was musty and stuffy. Dust danced as the faint light came through the windows covered in filth. Jax inhaled deeply, his senses assaulted by the scent of rust and old wood. Looking inside, he hoped to find anything practical.

He was sorting through the scattered items and broken furniture when he heard a slight rustling from the rear of the warehouse. Jax's pulse surged. Grabbing the improvised weapon—a broken piece of wood he had found earlier—he braced himself for whatever may be lurking in the darkness.

Hello! Jax yelled, his voice ringing across the still warehouse. There was merely continuous rustling—no quick response.

From behind a stack of boxes, a man emerged with a wavering flashlight. The man was in his early forties, with a tough face and a wary look. He carried a makeshift weapon—a pipe wrapped in cloth and sharpened at one end.

"Who is here?" The man insisted, his voice defensive and angry.

Jax raised his hands as a symbol of peace. "I'm not here to create disturbance. I just need some cover and maybe some information.

The man looked at Jax, his gaze sharpening. "Sam. Right? You are new around here.

Jax nodded, relieved but still concerned. "Yes, not too long ago I woke up in this place. I don't remember how I arrived here.

Sam's expression softened slightly. "You are not alone among them. A billion survivors, and most of us are simply trying to figure out what we have left and how to survive.

Sam moved to a little section of the warehouse that seemed to be his temporary residence. "Okay, you could spend some time here. To be clear, though, trust is not easy to find on this planet.

Jax trailed Sam into the little corner firepit, where a faint burn provided warmth. Jax enthusiastically grabbed a tin cup of stew that Sam handed him. The warmth and food provided a nice relief from the frigid weather outside.

"What, then, is the deal with this place?" Jax looked between mouthfuls. "I observed something in the system regarding a trade center. "How can that be done?"

Sam started to show a serious face. "Trade centers are establishments run by systems where you can swap supplies." Transactions are handled with points gained from several sources. It's not as simple as it appears; points are rare, and trading requires careful consideration.

Jax started to show curiosity. "Points? And how can one acquire them?"

Sam nodded. "Scrounging, finishing housework, or trading items will earn points. The system manages the transactions; yet, you have to be strategic. Though they might be dangerous, trading centers are dispersed across. "Not everyone is kind, and besides the surroundings, there are hazards."

Jax needed some time to sort the information. Although the idea of a trade center seemed interesting, it was clear that negotiating this new society would call for much more than just survival abilities.

Testing Skills and Trust

Sam kept his distance after their dinner. "I hardly let guests remain without knowing their capabilities. Here are a few tools that need repair. Now is the time to show off your skills, if they exist."

Jax peered at the crate Sam had pointed to. Inside were a few broken tools—a cracked crowbar, a damaged flashlight, and some arbitrary objects. He linked with the Echo of Eternity system and applied his recently acquired skill set in crafts.

The system interface flashed and displayed simple tool repair options. Jax selected the "Craft Basic Tools" choice and felt an energy surge guiding his hands. He corrected the flashlight in a few minutes, restoring its operation.

Sam viewed the rebuilt flashlight and nodded in agreement. "You seem to be excellent with tools. That sets a wonderful beginning. Having someone with your expertise would be great; I've been planning to correct a few items.

Jax felt proud of herself. "Until recently, I had not understood I have these abilities. It appears that the Echo of Eternity system serves purposes beyond mere survival.

Sam's countenance turned reflective. The is. Recall that you cannot accomplish anything alone, even with these skills. If you wish to succeed on this planet, you will have to depend on individuals.

Jax grew more resolved as evening fell. Visiting a trade center and learning what it has to offer appealed to me. He turned toward Sam. "I'm considering stopping by a commerce center not far away. It could be a wonderful way to compile materials and expand knowledge about the planet."

Sam nod. "One is not too far from here. Though I can show you the road, exercise care. Trade centers carry some risk. One is better off being attentive and ready.

Jax valued the offer. "Thanks for your advice. I will keep that in mind."

Sam smiled slightly. It was not difficult. Remember, survival is a constant struggle, and trust takes time.

Jax couldn't get rid of the feeling as he got ready for the trip ahead that his path was just starting. Though the planet was vast and full of unknowns, Sam felt ready to face whatever lay ahead with the Echo of Eternity system and his guidance.

Jax curled up for the evening, the crackling fire providing some comfort among his loneliness. The small light on the horizon drew him forward, representing hope and possibilities. Though he knew the road ahead would be difficult, he was resolved to go past the challenges and learn the secrets of this other world.

Jax inhaled long and closed his eyes, ready to greet the new day and the events it would bring. Though he knew survival would call for more than just his skill, the Echo of Eternity system was a powerful tool. As he traveled into the future, trust, collaboration, and ingenuity would be absolutely vital.

Though the route forward was unknown, Jax was prepared to meet whatever came his way. There were many opportunities in the future, and he was ready to meet them bravely and deliberately.
