They both stand together, side by side and check me out from head to toe. My eyes flick to my mom for a second, wondering if this behavior is normal or if I should say something to dispel this awkwardness. /"I’m your grandfather but you can call me Mick,/" Mick thrusts his hand forward for me to shake and I take it, grateful he’s not a hugger like his wife. /"We came to know we had a grandson a few minutes ago so we’re certainly shocked./"
/"But it is a good shock./" My grandmother adds, /"A very good shock. I’m Pauline by the way, your grandmother./" She looks a bit frazzled and desperately attempts to smooth out whatever ruffled nerves I may have about meeting them.
/"I’m Kyle,/" I chuckle awkwardly, not knowing how to pursue this conversation beyond. My eyes flick over to Mom for some help but I find her glancing at Samuel and everything is happening so fast that I don’t know how to respond to any of it.
