Chereads / Black Jade: The Rise of a Reluctant Player / Chapter 36 - Closer to the Summit

Chapter 36 - Closer to the Summit

The ascent felt endless, the winding staircase seeming to stretch on forever as Jada and Ember climbed higher into the Tower. The air grew thinner and colder, and the shadows cast by their glowing rings danced eerily on the walls. Jada trudged along, her feet heavy, her mind already drifting to thoughts of rest. Despite the satisfaction of completing the last trial, the constant pressure was wearing on her.

"I swear, if the next trial involves more glowing orbs, I'm sitting it out," Jada grumbled, her voice tinged with fatigue. She leaned heavily against the stone railing, her icy green jade ring glowing faintly as it synced with the Tower's energy.

Ember, as always, was full of energy, her fiery orange tourmaline gemstones gleaming brightly as she practically bounced up the steps. "Aw, come on, Jade! We're getting so close! Just think of the view from the top. It'll all be worth it."

Jada rolled her eyes, though she couldn't help but smile at Ember's enthusiasm. "You're like an overexcited puppy, you know that?"

Ember giggled, reaching out to take Jada's hand and pulling her along. "And you're like a grumpy old cat! But that's why we're perfect together."

Jada let out a mock groan but allowed herself to be pulled up the stairs. Despite her reluctance, she knew that Ember's optimism was what kept her going, even when all she wanted to do was curl up in a corner and sleep. They balanced each other in a way that made the trials bearable, even enjoyable at times.

As they reached the top of the staircase, they were met with a massive door, its surface adorned with intricate carvings that glowed softly in the dim light. The door seemed to hum with power, and Jada could feel the energy radiating from it, a reminder that they were nearing the summit of the Tower.

[System Notification: Preparing for the Fourth Trial. The path ahead will challenge your resolve and your bond. Proceed with caution.]

Jada sighed, reading the notification with a weary glance. "Great, more challenges. Just what I wanted."

Ember squeezed her hand reassuringly, her eyes full of determination. "We'll get through it, Jade. We always do."

"Yeah, I know," Jada said softly, her voice tinged with affection. "But seriously, I'm holding you to that nap after this. I've been very productive since we discovered we were stuck in this game for ten years, so I think I deserve some relaxation now that we're in this stupid tower. By the way, your being serious throughout that time was weird. Don't do that again. I'd rather have this side of you... not that I don't like your serious side."

Ember laughed, leaning in to give Jada a quick kiss. "Deal! But only if you make it through this next trial without complaining too much. And I think that was a dire time for me to be serious. I was in 'gamer mode.'"

Jada smirked, feeling a bit of her energy return at the playful challenge. "Yeah, that sounds like you."

They pushed the door open together, the stone groaning as it slowly swung inward to reveal a vast chamber, its walls lined with massive columns that stretched up into the darkness above. The air was thick with energy, the atmosphere almost suffocating in its intensity.

In the center of the chamber stood a large, circular platform, glowing with a soft, blue light. The floor beneath their feet was etched with runes that pulsed in time with the platform's glow. The room was silent, save for the faint hum of power that filled the air.

As they stepped closer to the platform, their System Rings reacted, projecting new interfaces before them.

[System Notification: The Fourth Trial has begun. Objective: Complete the Trial of Resilience. This trial will test your endurance and your bond. Survive the challenges, and the path to the summit will be revealed.]

Jada frowned, her tired mind already dreading what was to come. "Resilience? That sounds like code for 'you're going to hate this.'"

Ember grinned, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Or it could mean we get to show how strong we are! We've come this far, Jade. We can handle whatever they throw at us."

Jada sighed, though she couldn't help but feel a bit of Ember's infectious energy. "Yeah, yeah. Let's just get this over with."

They stepped onto the platform, the runes beneath their feet glowing brighter as they activated the trial. The air around them seemed to vibrate with energy, and the room darkened as a dome of light formed above the platform, trapping them inside.

[System Notification: Trial of Resilience initiated. Prepare for wave one.]

Jada's heart sank as the first wave of enemies materialized before them—shadowy figures with glowing red eyes, their forms shifting and flickering like flames. They were fast, almost too fast to track, and they attacked with a ferocity that made Jada's pulse quicken.

Ember was already in motion, her fiery orange tourmaline ring glowing brightly as she activated her shield, deflecting the first wave of attacks. "Stay close, Jade! We've got this!"

Jada reluctantly drew her dagger, her icy green jade ring pulsing with energy as she prepared to fight. "I swear, I'm going to need a week-long nap after this," she muttered, though there was a hint of a smile on her lips.

The battle was intense, each wave of enemies more difficult than the last. The shadowy figures moved with lightning speed, their attacks relentless. But Jada and Ember fought side by side, their movements synchronized as they defended each other from the onslaught.

[System Notification: Wave one complete. Prepare for wave two.]

Jada panted heavily, her stamina waning as the second wave appeared—larger, more powerful creatures with glowing weapons and armor. "How many waves are there?" she groaned, wiping sweat from her brow.

Ember grinned, her energy seemingly boundless. "Probably a lot! But we're almost through it, I can feel it!"

Jada grumbled under her breath but pushed forward, her determination fueled by Ember's unwavering positivity. They fought fiercely, their bond strengthening with each passing moment. Even as Jada's exhaustion grew, she found herself smiling, the warmth of their connection giving her the strength to keep going.

[System Notification: Final wave incoming. Brace yourselves.]

The final wave was the most challenging of all—massive, armored creatures that towered over them, their weapons glowing with a menacing light. Jada's muscles ached, her mind screaming for rest, but she refused to back down.

"Ember, stay behind me," Jada ordered, her voice filled with determination.

Ember hesitated, but the look in Jada's eyes made her comply. "Just don't do anything reckless, okay?"

Jada smirked. "When have I ever been reckless?"

They moved as one, Jada leading the charge with Ember providing support from behind. The creatures were powerful, their attacks devastating, but Jada fought with a fierceness she hadn't felt in a long time. She was tired, yes, but there was no way she was letting anything happen to Ember—not now, not ever.

Finally, with a powerful strike, Jada brought down the last of the creatures, the platform trembling as it fell. The dome of light around them flickered, then vanished, leaving the chamber in silence.

[System Notification: Trial of Resilience complete. The path to the summit is now open.]

Jada dropped to one knee, panting heavily as she tried to catch her breath. "Finally… it's over."

Ember knelt beside her, her hand resting on Jada's shoulder. "You did it, Jade! I knew you could!"

Jada chuckled weakly, leaning against Ember for support. "I'm not sure I could've done it without you. You're my strength, Ember."

Ember blushed, her smile softening. "And you're mine, Jade. We're a team—nothing can break us."

Jada closed her eyes, a sense of peace washing over her. "Yeah… we're a team."

As they rested, the massive gate at the far end of the chamber began to open, revealing the final staircase that led to the summit. The air around them was charged with energy, the anticipation of what lay ahead almost palpable.

Jada sighed, reluctantly getting to her feet. "I guess we should keep moving. The sooner we reach the top, the sooner I can take that nap."

Ember laughed, taking Jada's hand as they began their ascent. "And I'll be right there with you, every step of the way."

Jada smiled, her heart full of love for the girl beside her. Despite her exhaustion, despite the trials they had faced, there was nowhere else she'd rather be. The summit awaited, and with Ember by her side, she knew they could conquer anything.
