Chapter 26 - When Hope Shatters

Haruto rushed through the hospital's corridors, his steps frantic, his expressions clouded with worry, his breathing uneven as he pushed himself forward, not stopping for anything.

As he reached outside the emergency room, he saw his mother sitting outside on a chair, her face buried in her hands, sobbing desperately, her agonizing cries filling the air.

Haruto stood frozen for a moment, gazing at her with disbelief. Slowly he walked towards her, each step heavier than the last one, until he reached her, standing near her in silence.

"Mom" Haruto called out softly, his voice trembling with disbelief and concern.

His mother's sobbing came to a slow halt, slowly she looked up at him, her eyes swollen and red, tears still streaming uncontrollably down her cheeks.

"What happened?" Haruto asked in a hushed tone, his voice thick with concern.

But his mother couldn't answer, her sobs breaking the silence again, her cries agonizing and heart wrenching. Just then Haruto heard footsteps approaching from behind.

Haruto slowly turned around and noticed someone coming from the shadows, emerging from the darkness was Rensuke, Haruto's eyes widened upon caughting the sight of his brother.

Rensuke walked towards Haruto, his head lowered, his clothes strained with their father's blood, he came to a stop right in front of Haruto, his face blank, expressionless, as if drained of any emotion.

Haruto's gaze was locked on the blood staining Rensuke's shirt, his expressions mix of fear and disbelief, the sight of the blood and his brother's reaction growing his concern.

Looking up at Rensuke, Haruto's voice trembled with fear and uncertainty, as he asked "Rensuke, what happened?"

Rensuke's expressions faltered slightly, a flicker of anguish breaking through his composure, forcing himself to speak, he said, "A truck… hit our father!"

The words hitting Haruto like lightning, his eyes wide opened with disbelief, his heart feeling like it had stopped, his breath grew ragged and his eyes welled up with tears which started streaming down his cheeks.

Overcome with unimaginable pain, he pressed his hand to his forehead, in a futile attempt to hold back his grief, Unable to contain himself any further, he broke down into silent wrenching sobs.

Rensuke grabbed Haruto's shoulder and pulled him into a comforting hug, "Don't worry," he said softly "The doctor's are still with him, I promise he will make it, I promise." he said giving a reassuring pat on his back.

Haruto's cries grew louder, mingling with their mother's cires, filling the area with a chorus of grief.

Later on, Rensuke was pacing anxiously outside the emergency room, his movements restless and uneasy, while Haruto was sitting beside his mother, his arm wrapped around her as she was leaning on his shoulder, her expressions blank, devoid of any emotion.

Just then the emergency room's door opened and a doctor came out, Rensuke immediately stood before him, Haruto and the mother followed standing anxiously before the doctor.

Doctor removed his mask, his expressions somber as he met Rensuke's gaze who was taking heavy breaths, his gaze fixed on the doctor, desperate for information.

"Rensuke" The doctor began, "Your father's condition is very critical."

Rensuke's face tightened with concern, while Haruto's eyes brimmed with tears, their mother covering her mouth with her hand and began to sob silently.

"Doctor, do whatever it takes, but please save him." Rensuke pleaded.

The doctor nodded and placed a comforting hand on Rensuke's shoulder, "Come to my office" he said leading the way.

Haruto and Rensuke exchanged worried glances, both clearly anxious.

In the doctor's office, the doctor sat behind his desk, while Haruto and Rensuke sat across from him. There was a heavy silence in the room, while Haruto and Rensuke were anxiously waiting for the doctor to speak up.

The doctor was looking down at the table, taking a deep breath he looked up at Rensuke, "Your father's brain has been severely injured. It's bleeding and swelling continuously." he said. In response, Haruto and Rensuke's eyes widened with alarm.

The doctor continued, "And it's not just his brain, he has suffered with multiple fractures, Including significant injuries on his spinal cord."

"Doctor there must be a way of saving him." Rensuke urged his voice trembling with desperation.

The doctor nodded slightly, "Yes, we'll need to perform several operations, we can address the fractures, but for the brain injury we'll need to proceed with a decompressive craniectomy."

"Then why are we wasting time, doctor?" Rensuke demanded, his voice sharp yet polite, "Do whatever it takes."

The doctor nodded and replied, "Rensuke, the craniectomy alone will cost 15 million yen."

Haruto's eyes widened upon hearing the cost, while Rensuke's expressions showed a flicker of concern.

"And after the craniectomy, there will be lots more operations and treatments." The doctor continued, "It all combined will cost around 18 million yen."

Rensuke closed his eyes, then reopens them with renewed resolve, "I'll arrange it!" he declared.

"We will." Haruto echoed confidently, drawing the doctor's and Rensuke's eyes on him.

Haruto confidently spoke up, "Doctor began the preparations, we will arrange the money."

The doctor nodded confidently, "Alright, I'll contact a specialist for this, you have this night to arrange the money, submit the twelve millions by tomorrow's morning."

Haruto and Rensuke nodded with a firm sense of determination, fully committed to save their father.

A short time later Haruto stood outside the doctor's office, his back leaning against the wall, lost in thoughts.

Rensuke paced back and forth, speaking on his phone. "Yes… Yes… Thank You… I'll come to receive the money at tomorrow's early morning… Thank you" he said before ending the call, his expressions tensed as he turned to Haruto.

"Combining Father's and my accounts, we have a total of three million." Rensuke said, his voice tinged with worry.

Haruto nodded, "I have one million myself, so that makes four million."

"Only if we had more time i would've sell our house," Rensuke said.

"No," Haruto interjected firmly, "Our father has put lots of hard work and memories into that house, we will manage something, don't worry" he said.

Rensuke agreed with a nod, "I'll try to get a loan from my company or from my friends."

Haruto responded, "I'll head to the bank to withdraw the money, I'll be back shortly" Rensuke nodded in agreement, and Haruto quickly left, his step brisk and urgent…

Haruto burst into his apartment, rushing towards the suitcase, opening it with frantic movements, he pulled out his laptop, wristwatches and everything he had…

At the electronic store, Haruto placed his laptop, watches and even his mobile phone on the counter. The shopkeeper examined the items carefully, While Haruto stood by, waiting patiently.

After examining, the shopkeeper extended a stack of cash towards Haruto who accepted It with a grateful smile, shook hands with the shopkeeper and then exited the store…

Haruto now stood inside a luxurious house, his gaze lowered, his expressions devoid of emotions.

Haruto's landowner, a man in his mid forties walks towards Haruto carrying a briefcase, he extends it to Haruto, saying "This is a half of million yen, this is all I could arrange."

With a grateful smile Haruto accepted the briefcase saying, "Thank you so much sir, It will help a lot, I'll repay you as soon as I can."

"No need to hurry, Haruto" The landowner responded with a reassuring tone, "I'll pray for your father's recovery."

Haruto smiles gratefully, nodded saying, "Thank you so much."

Walking down the street, Haruto then entered a shop, upon looking up, his gaze met the only person in the shop which was Max, his friend and the one from whom he had bought the ring.

Max's gaze was locked on Haruto, his eyes filled with deep concern and sorrow. His expressions made it clear that he was aware of the situation with his father.

"Haruto" Max whispered softly, his eyes welling up with tears, he quickly jumped off the counter, rushed towards Haruto, embracing him in a tight hug.

Now standing behind the counter, Max quickly pulls out a bag and placed into Haruto's hand, "Brother, It's 300k yen. I know it's not enough but you don't worry I'll arrange more by tomorrow I'll speak with the owner I'm sure he will help-"

Suddenly, Max's voice wavered mid sentence. He fell silent, his eyes opened wide, gazing at Haruto who was flashing a weak smile, a heartbreaking mask barely hiding the overwhelming pain beneath.
