Chapter 7 - Changing course

Gazing up at the ceiling illuminated by radiant rays of the rising sun, Dre formulated a simple plan.

Forgetting that this wasn't really an authentic reality but a memory conjured up in a game like tournament, Dre's head become clouded with only the thought of saving his parents.

He didn't know what happened last time and quite frankly he didn't care, this time he was sure as hell gonna save them...

..

Not intending to cancel the trip as he already knew where the accident happened and exactly when, the plan was to convince his parents to take another route and if that failed then he would just find some reason to slow them or straight up stop them when they approached the scene he remembered all too well.

Signing, he got off bed and headed straight for the washroom where he spent the next thirty minutes scrubbing after which, he went back into his room ravaged the closet and trekked into the living room.

There he found his father already settled on the three sitter coach immersed deep in the conversation on the television set.

"Morning." He greeted sitting beside him.

Joe, his father, lingered for over a minute as if now perceiving his presence and the greating.

"Morning." Picking up the remote beside him, he turned the tv off and glanced at Dre. "Excited to see one of the wonders of the world?"

"Of cause I am."

"You don't look like it."

"I'm just wondering how it'll look like in reality, that's all." Dre shrugged.

"Well prepare to have your mind blown." Joe said with a smirk.

"Also make sure to not drop your jaw." His mother, coming out of the kitchen with a plate of pancakes on one hand and a flask on the other, added.

Approaching them, she placed the pancakes on the table bearing three cups and served them tea before sitting to the left of Dre.

Experiencing breakfast with them almost made him tear up, he'd not realised how much he'd missed them.

"I'm really thankful for having you as my parents." Dre said, trying to hide the sorrowful expression on his face by sipping the tea.

"That was unexpected, but we also couldn't ask for a better son." His mother, Mary, said, momentarily surprised by this.

With a bite, Joe nodded.

Taking that weight off his chest, Dre continued to converse with them, although most of the conversations they brought up he'd already heard off, he didn't complain as he was already greatful for this moment.

After about half an hour they'd finished the breakfast thanked Mary for it and were now busy preparing for departure.

..

Sitting comfortably on the backsit of their minivan, Dre was now concocting a plan of how to convince his dad to take another route other than the one where the accident occurred.

The reason this was hard was because the road his father planed on taking was shorter and with far more less traffic than any other road.

Departing, his parents were busy conversing with each other giving him plenty of time to come up with an excuse before they arrived at the intersection where one road could lead to a future of indulgence and happiness and the other to pain and misery, of course Dre disired it to be the former.

His father had already began speeding, though not at a pace where it would be impossible to suddenly stop, Dre still felt quite uneasy, however he didn't say anything as he knew this site was far from where they'd rammed the trailer.

"Ahm...umm, Dad can we take the uphill route." Coughing to draw their attention, Dre asked.

"Nope, that one has too much traffic."

"Huh! But I wanna see the theme park my friends are always talking about." Dre, acting in character, refuted.

"I thought we already agreed that we were going to take you there this Christmas." Mary said.

"I just want to see how it looks."

"Well you'll see it on our way back." Leo added.

"But it'll already be dark out by then."Dre, having long prepared for this scenario, said athough he didn't expect his father to have a ready to go answer.

"Well, no matter how dark out it is, the park will always be visible. And there really isn't much fun in going to a place where you've already seen what to expect."

"Fine then." Dre was about to say that his current situation was the same but decided to go with plan B, which was to find an excuse for them to stop for at least half an hour.

After the short conversation, silence reigned in the car for a good fourty minutes with each doing their own thing til Dre uttered.

"I need to use the bathroom."

"There's one about eight miles from here." Mary who was busy playing with her phone said.

"I don't think I can hold it that long." Dre, crossing his legs, said.

"But we can't stop here."

His father hearing this didn't say anything as he just turned the car around, leaving the bypass and onto a lonely road where he stopped after about a minute drive before turning his gaze.

"Be quick."

"Ok." With a breath of relief, Dre got off and strode a little further down the road.

They were still a few kilometers away from the scene but he didn't wish to risk it so he made them stop a bit further and now he needed an excuse to stay out for more than twenty minutes which he ofcause knew his father couldn't cover. This meant that the trailer they rammed would've long passed.

Trekking down the path, he found a nice spot where he went on about his business before immediately turning and hurrying back.

He'd suddenly recalled the last time an explosion unexpectedly occurred, so what if this time another unforseen turn took shape? He couldn't risk it. Though he didn't know what he could do at that moment considering how powerless he was, nevertheless he was still willing to do whatever he was capable of.

Arriving, he saw the car still there safe with his mother peeking out through the window gesturing for him to hurry up. A smile adorning his face he slowed and began formulating a different plan to stall them.

~Beeeeeb~bang~

"No." A whisper obstinately escaped his lips as his eyes widened in shock and disbelief. Witnessing the scene he was powerless to stop, unfold before him. His legs gave out with a single step.

A reeling trailer had just appeared out of nowhere, almost supernatural, and rammed their van's head making it none existence.

"Why?" Dre's scream echoed throughout the empty road before he abruptly lost consciousness.

"Dre, Dre get up, we'll be late."
