RENEE
When I arrived at the venue, Miles was nowhere to be seen. His absence didn't unsettle me; I had braced myself for whatever might happen here tonight.
Adan's hand was on mine as we stepped inside together. I kept my eyes fixed ahead, refusing to glance at the enormous photographs of me that covered the walls.
"Let's go say hi to my brother," Adan murmured, his breath warm against my ear as he gently steered me through the bustling crowd.
I knew this wasn't just a casual introduction; he wanted to show me off, and I couldn't bring myself to mind.
"Liam!" Adan called out. The young man he addressed was deep in discussion with a small group from the press, but he immediately turned at the sound of his name.
His movements faltered when his eyes found me. He stilled, and for a moment, time seemed to slow. His gaze swept over my dress—lingering too long—before rising to meet my eyes.
