Chapter 5 - 5. Hacker - Phoenix

As the night drew to a close, Yvonne's friends, now more relaxed and enjoying the evening, tried to convince her to stay with them until the next day.

"Come on, Yvonne, just crash at my place tonight! We can have breakfast together in the morning," Emily suggested, her voice laced with enthusiasm. A few others chimed in, echoing the idea.

Yvonne smiled but shook her head. "I'd love to, really. But I've got work tomorrow morning," she explained.

"Oh, come on, Yvonne. One more night of fun won't hurt!" insisted one of her friends, slightly tipsy and clearly wanting the night to continue.

Yvonne hesitated for a moment, feeling the pull of their camaraderie. But then she remembered her responsibilities. "I've got a big project to tackle, and I can't afford to be late," she said, her tone firm but still friendly.

"What kind of project?" Emily asked, curious. "You never talk about work."

Yvonne shrugged nonchalantly. "Just helping a company redesign their website. Nothing too exciting."

Her friends groaned playfully. "You and your work ethic," Emily teased. "Fine, but you're missing out on some serious fun!"

Yvonne laughed and gathered her things. "I'll catch up with you guys another time, I promise."

As she stood to leave, her phone buzzed in her pocket. Seeing her mother's name on the screen, she sighed inwardly. She knew exactly what this call was about. With a resigned look, she answered, "Hi, Mom."

"Yvonne, have you scheduled any interviews yet?" her mother's voice was a mix of concern and impatience. "You can't keep putting this off forever. You need to find a stable job, something secure."

Yvonne rolled her eyes, though her voice remained calm. "Mom, I'm working on something right now. It's a freelance gig."

"Freelance? Yvonne, that's not a real job! You need to find something with benefits, a career you can rely on," her mother insisted, not for the first time.

Yvonne sighed, resisting the urge to argue. "I'll look into it, Mom. I'm just really busy right now, okay?"

Her mother wasn't convinced. "Yvonne, you're almost thirty. You need to start thinking about your future. You can't just drift from one project to the next."

Yvonne bit her lip, trying to stay patient. "I know, Mom. I'm handling it. I'll call you later, alright? I'm still at the reunion."

"Alright," her mother replied, still sounding worried. "Just promise me you'll take this seriously."

"I will. Love you, Mom," Yvonne said before ending the call. She took a deep breath, composing herself.

Emily, who had caught the last bit of the conversation, gave her a sympathetic look. "Your mom again?"

Yvonne nodded, tucking her phone away. "Yeah, she's worried about my 'career.' Thinks I'm wasting my life."

"Well, if only she knew," Emily said with a wink, referring to the freelance work Yvonne claimed to be doing.

If only she really knew, Yvonne thought to herself. The truth was far more complicated than she let on. In reality, Yvonne wasn't just some freelance web designer. She was Phoenix, the world's top-ranked female hacker, renowned for her skills in cyber infiltration and protection. Tomorrow's "project" was no ordinary website redesign; it was a complete overhaul and security enhancement for one of the world's largest corporations.

But none of her friends, not even Emily, knew about her double life. Not even her mother, who still believed she was struggling to find stable work. The less anyone knew, the better.

Emily, unaware of the true gravity of Yvonne's responsibilities, shrugged and gave her a hug. "Don't let her get to you, Yvonne. You'll figure everything out. And hey, if you ever need a break from 'freelancing,' you know where to find us."

Yvonne smiled, hugging her friend back. "Thanks, Em. I'll keep that in mind."

With that, she said her goodbyes and headed out into the night. As she walked to her car, her mind shifted from the light-hearted atmosphere of the reunion to the serious task ahead. She would have to work through the night to ensure everything was perfect by morning.

But as she started the engine and drove off, Yvonne couldn't help but smile to herself. Despite the pressure and the secrets, she thrived in this life of dual identities. She wasn't just Yvonne Miller, the woman who seemed to have no direction in life. She was Phoenix, the most sought-after hacker in the world, and she loved every minute of it.
