Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Eyes of Fate

The sun dipped low over the horizon, casting a warm, golden hue across the bustling city. In the heart of it all, Kailen walked briskly through the crowded streets, unaware that this day, so ordinary, would mark the end of everything he had ever known.

Kailen was an ordinary man—or so he believed. He had a modest apartment in the city, a job he didn't hate, and a small circle of friends who filled his weekends with laughter and stories. Life wasn't perfect, but it was his, and he cherished it.

Today, though, was different. As he made his way home, a strange feeling gnawed at the edges of his mind. It was as if something dark and ancient had stirred from a long slumber, reaching out to him through the cracks of reality. He shook off the uneasy sensation, blaming it on the stress of the week. But the feeling persisted, growing stronger with each step.

He turned a corner, and there it was—a small, shadowy alleyway he had never noticed before. It was as though it had appeared out of nowhere, cutting into the familiar streets he had walked a thousand times. Curiosity piqued, Kailen hesitated only a moment before stepping into the alley.

The air was colder here, and the sounds of the city faded into a muffled whisper. The alley was narrow and lined with ancient, crumbling brick walls that seemed to lean inward as if trying to touch. At the far end, a dim light flickered from a small, dusty shop with a faded sign that read: Curiosities and Antiquities.

Something compelled Kailen to approach. The door creaked open as he pushed against it, revealing a dimly lit interior cluttered with strange and unusual objects—masks from distant lands, ancient scrolls, and bizarre statues that seemed to watch with unblinking eyes.

Behind the counter stood an old man with a long, silver beard and eyes that gleamed with unsettling wisdom. He smiled faintly as Kailen entered.

"Welcome," the old man said in a voice that was both warm and chilling. "I've been expecting you."

Kailen blinked, confused. "Expecting me? I just… happened to pass by."

"Nothing happens by chance," the old man replied cryptically. He reached beneath the counter and pulled out a small, ornate box. "This is what you seek."

"I'm not seeking anything," Kailen protested, but his eyes were drawn to the box, as if pulled by an invisible force.

"Take it," the old man urged, pushing the box toward him. "It is yours."

With trembling hands, Kailen opened the box. Inside lay a small, polished mirror, its surface gleaming unnaturally in the dim light. The moment he looked into the mirror, he felt a surge of power, ancient and overwhelming, flooding his veins. The world around him seemed to warp and twist as the curse took hold.

A voice, neither male nor female, echoed in his mind, filled with both sorrow and malice. "The eyes of Medusa are now yours."

Panic gripped Kailen as he dropped the mirror, the glass shattering on the floor. He stumbled backward, knocking into a shelf of artifacts. The old man was gone—vanished as if he had never been there.

Heart racing, Kailen fled the shop, but the curse had already begun its work. As he burst into the alley, he caught sight of a stray cat slinking through the shadows. Their eyes met, and in an instant, the cat froze, its body stiffening and hardening until it was nothing more than a lifeless statue of stone.

"No… no, no, no!" Kailen cried out, covering his eyes with his hands. But even as he did, he felt the material of his gloves disintegrate into ash, as if the curse refused to be contained.

Desperation clawed at him as he stumbled out of the alley and back into the crowded streets. But now, every glance, every fleeting look turned living beings into statues—people froze mid-step, their faces locked in expressions of shock and fear as stone claimed them.

Realizing the horror he had unleashed, Kailen ran, tears streaming down his face, leaving a trail of petrified bodies in his wake. He didn't stop until he reached the safety of his apartment, slamming the door behind him and collapsing onto the floor in darkness.

The reality of his situation crashed down on him. He was cursed—cursed with the power of Medusa, a power that could not be controlled or hidden. His eyes were a weapon, a curse that would destroy everything he held dear.

In the darkness, he wept, mourning the loss of his life, his loved ones, and his humanity. The city outside was silent, a graveyard of stone.

And so began the long, lonely journey of Kailen, who had lost everything in the blink of an eye.
