Chapter 16 - 16. Competition day

As the competition day approached, Clara encouraged Emily to focus solely on her preparations. "Emily, now that the café crisis is over, you need to put all your energy into this competition. Don't let anything distract you," she advised, her voice firm but supportive.

Emily nodded, understanding the importance of the event. "You're right. This is our chance to really shine."

To help her friend, Clara went the extra mile, purchasing brand-new barista equipment for Emily. "Here," she said, handing over a sleek, state-of-the-art coffee grinder and espresso machine. "Consider this a good luck charm. You deserve to compete with the best tools available."

Emily's eyes widened with gratitude. "Clara, you didn't have to do this… but thank you. I'll make sure to put them to good use."

The day of the competition arrived, and the venue buzzed with anticipation. Emily, dressed in a crisp white apron, entered the bustling arena. The atmosphere was electric, with competitors from all over the region setting up their stations.

Before the competition began, all participants were required to submit their equipment and ingredients for inspection by the organizers. This process was designed to ensure fairness, with no one having an unfair advantage. Emily watched closely as her carefully selected coffee beans and equipment were inspected.

As she waited in the designated area, Emily's eyes wandered across the room and suddenly caught sight of Vanessa. Her heart skipped a beat, assuming Vanessa was there to cause trouble. But when she noticed Vanessa seated among the judges, her initial fear turned into confusion.

"Is she really a judge?" Emily whispered to herself, her mind racing. "What is she doing here?"

Clara, who had been watching Emily's reaction, leaned in and whispered, "Ignore her. Focus on what you're here to do. Vanessa might be trying to get in your head, but don't let her. You've got this."

Emily nodded, trying to shake off the unease that crept over her.

When it was finally Emily's turn to compete, she approached her station with a mix of nerves and determination. As she began to set up her equipment, something felt off. She grabbed a handful of coffee beans and immediately noticed the texture was wrong—too dry, brittle, and lacking the rich aroma she was accustomed to.

A sinking feeling took hold of her as she quickly inspected the rest of her beans. They had been tampered with, their quality severely compromised. Panic surged through her, but she forced herself to stay calm.

"Who would do this?" Emily thought, though she had a strong suspicion. Her eyes darted toward Vanessa, who was watching from the judges' table with a smug, unreadable expression.

Clara, sensing something was wrong, quickly approached. "Emily, what's going on?"

Emily showed her the damaged beans. "These aren't the beans I brought. Someone's tampered with them. If I use these, I'll be out of the competition."

Clara frowned, anger flashing in her eyes. "I knew something like this might happen. Good thing I packed an extra set of beans just in case. Here." She handed over a sealed bag of the high-quality beans they'd carefully chosen.

Emily let out a sigh of relief. "Clara, you're a lifesaver."

With the new beans, Emily reset her focus and began the competition with renewed determination. Her movements were precise and fluid, each step of the brewing process executed with confidence. As she worked, the audience grew quieter, captivated by her skillful performance.

When it came time for the latte art portion, Emily's hands moved almost instinctively, creating intricate, delicate patterns atop the coffee. The crowd erupted into applause as she finished, clearly impressed by her artistry.

As the competition progressed, it became clear that the event was narrowing down to the top talents. By the time the final round was announced, only two names remained: Emily and Jessica, Vanessa's childhood friend and longtime rival of Emily.

The tension in the room was palpable as the two women prepared to face off. Emily couldn't help but notice the satisfied smirk on Vanessa's face as Jessica's name was called. It was clear that Claire had a vested interest in seeing Jessica win.
