Chapter 5 - 5. A call to blame

Emily spent several days in the hospital, her body slowly recovering from the illness and the emotional trauma. During this time, Clara remained a steadfast presence, visiting her daily, bringing comfort and reassurance. Despite the medical staff's encouragement and Clara's support, the absence of Alexander was a heavy weight on Emily's already burdened heart.

The hospital room felt both sterile and strangely personal with Clara's visits, each one filled with gentle encouragement and quiet companionship. Yet, Emily's mind was consumed with the pain of Alexander's betrayal. She had hoped, against all reason, that he would come to his senses, that he would visit her, or at least reach out to check on her.

But as days passed, the phone remained silent, and the only calls she received were from Clara, her mother, and a few concerned friends. Each unanswered call from Alexander was like a knife twisting deeper into her wound. She could only assume he had forgotten about her—or worse, simply didn't care.

Then, on the fifth day, Emily's phone rang with an unexpected call from Alexander. She answered, her voice weak but hopeful. "Hello?"

"Emily," Alexander's voice was cold and accusatory. "I'm receiving reports that you're still in the hospital. Is this some kind of performance to get my attention?"

Emily's heart sank. She was taken aback by the hostility in his tone. "No, Alexander, I'm genuinely ill. I—"

"Genuinely ill or not," Alexander interrupted sharply, "I have better things to do than indulge in your dramatics. I've been busy. Vanessa and I have been out, shopping, enjoying ourselves. So if you're just trying to get a reaction out of me, it's not working."

The contempt in his voice was palpable. Emily's hands trembled as she held the phone. She struggled to keep her composure, her voice breaking with emotion. "I didn't do this to get your attention. I'm genuinely sick, and I've been—"

"Enough," Alexander cut her off. "I don't have time for this. If you're truly in need of help, figure it out yourself."

With that, he hung up, leaving Emily staring at the phone in shock. Tears streamed down her face as the reality of his indifference hit her. She had hoped for some sign of remorse or care, but instead, she was met with a harsh dismissal. Her heart ached as the bitterness of his words settled in.

Meanwhile, outside the hospital, Alexander was fully immersed in his new life with Vanessa. They had been inseparable, spending their days indulging in lavish shopping sprees and dining at exclusive restaurants. The luxurious lifestyle they were enjoying seemed to be a stark contrast to the misery Emily was enduring.

Alexander would drop Vanessa off at designer boutiques, where they would spend hours picking out clothes, accessories, and even planning future trips together. Their nights were filled with laughter and intimacy as they stayed in expensive hotels or, more frequently, at Alexander's house, where Vanessa had become a regular guest.

One evening, after a particularly extravagant day of shopping and dining, Vanessa lingered at Alexander's home, making herself comfortable. The sight of her sprawled on the couch, surrounded by shopping bags and designer labels, was a clear testament to how quickly their relationship had progressed.

They shared a passionate kiss on the doorstep as Vanessa playfully teased Alexander about their future plans. The comfort and familiarity between them were evident, and it was clear that their bond had deepened over the days.

Back at the hospital, Clara remained Emily's unwavering support. She stayed late into the evening, often bringing fresh clothes, books, and the occasional treat to lift Emily's spirits. Despite the pain and exhaustion, Emily found solace in Clara's company, and the two friends would talk late into the night, discussing everything from mundane topics to the deeper emotional turmoil Emily was experiencing.

As the days dragged on, Emily's health slowly improved, but her emotional wounds remained raw. The absence of Alexander, coupled with his harsh words, had left her feeling more alone than ever. The only solace she found was in Clara's steadfast presence and the occasional encouragement from her family and friends.
