Chapter 16 - 16. Live together

After the banquet, as they were driving back, Shirley suddenly turned to Emma with a thoughtful expression.

"Emma," Shirley began, her tone casual but carrying a hint of seriousness, "I've been thinking... You shouldn't have to stay in that cramped space above the restaurant anymore. It's not safe, and it's definitely not comfortable. Why don't you move in with me?"

Emma blinked in surprise, not expecting such an offer. "Shirley, that's really generous of you, but I wouldn't want to impose. Besides, I don't think I can afford the kind of place you live in."

Shirley waved off her concerns with a smile. "You wouldn't be imposing at all, Emma. In fact, I've been meaning to get a new place myself. We could find a nice apartment together and split the rent. That way, it won't feel like you're just moving into my space—it'll be our space. What do you think?"

Emma hesitated, her mind racing. The idea of moving in with Shirley was tempting. The restaurant loft was convenient, but it wasn't exactly a home. It was small, noisy, and lacked privacy. Moving in with Shirley would give her a fresh start and a much better living situation. But she also didn't want to feel like a burden.

Seeing her friend's reluctance, Shirley gently added, "Look, I know it might feel like a big step, but you deserve a better place, Emma. You've been through a lot, and it's time you had a home that reflects the strong, amazing person you are. And trust me, I'd love the company."

Emma smiled, feeling a wave of gratitude. "If you're sure... then I'd love to. But we'll definitely split the rent. I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of your kindness."

Shirley grinned. "Deal! We'll be the perfect roommates. Tomorrow, I'll help you start packing, and we can go check out some apartments together. Sound good?"

Emma nodded, a sense of excitement bubbling up. "That sounds perfect, Shirley. Thank you. I don't know what I'd do without you."

The next morning, true to her word, Shirley arrived at the restaurant early, armed with boxes and a can-do attitude. Together, they began packing up Emma's things, the process filled with laughter and lighthearted banter.

"I can't believe you've been living like this," Shirley teased as she folded one of Emma's aprons. "You're a trooper, Emma."

Emma chuckled, slightly embarrassed. "It's not so bad. But I have to admit, I'm really looking forward to a change."

Shirley nodded as she taped up a box. "This is just the beginning, Emma. We're going to find a beautiful place where you can finally feel at home. And who knows? Maybe this move will be the start of something even bigger for you."

Emma smiled at the thought, feeling a spark of hope. "I think you might be right, Shirley. I'm ready for a fresh start."

After they finished packing, the two friends loaded everything into Shirley's car and drove to Shirley's apartment. On the way, they talked about the kind of place they wanted to find—a cozy, modern apartment with lots of natural light, a space where they could both feel comfortable and at ease.

"I can't wait to start apartment hunting," Shirley said excitedly. "We'll find the perfect place, I'm sure of it."

Emma nodded, feeling more confident than she had in a long time. "I trust you, Shirley. With you by my side, I know everything will work out."

They spent the rest of the day at Shirley's apartment, sorting through Emma's belongings and making plans for the future. As they talked and laughed, Emma felt a growing sense of peace and contentment. She had always been so focused on surviving day to day, but now, with Shirley's support, she could finally start thinking about what she wanted for herself.

That night, as they sat on the couch with cups of tea, Shirley looked over at Emma and said, "I'm really glad you're here, Emma. I think this is going to be a new chapter for both of us."

Emma smiled warmly, feeling the truth of Shirley's words. "Me too, Shirley. Thank you for everything. I couldn't have asked for a better friend."

Shirley winked. "Well, you're stuck with me now, so get used to it!"

They both laughed, and for the first time in a long while, Emma felt truly hopeful about the future.
