Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: suspicions of rebellion

Lu Ming looked out over the imposing city of Silver from the balcony of the central palace, now his temporary residence. The recent proclamation as king had been met with a mix of respectful silence and distrustful glances among the elves. Although control of the city was secured militarily, Lu Ming knew that forced loyalty was only as solid as the momentary peace it offered. A whisper of rebellion could turn into a battle cry if he did not handle the situation shrewdly.

General Thalor and Priest Lyra approached him. Thalor wore his armor proudly, while Lyra, in her dark robes and unfazed expression, observed the city with eyes that seemed to see beyond the stone walls.

"Sir, our scouts have detected unusual movements in the slums of the city," Thalor reported, his deep voice resonating with authority. "Some of the former elven nobles seem to be plotting, and there are rumors that they are planning something big."

Lu Ming nodded, not taking his eyes off the city spread out below him. "It's not unexpected. Nobles always feel they have more right to rule than the warriors who actually gain power. We need to crush any rebellion before it can take shape."

Lyra, ever the calculating one, interjected. "I've been sensing disturbances in the magic network surrounding the city. There's someone powerful among them, someone who's manipulating magic to keep their movements hidden. If we don't act soon, they might become too strong."

Lu Ming frowned. "Suggestions?"

"We need to infiltrate their ranks and better understand their plans," Lyra replied. "I have some agents who could blend in with the elves, feigning discontent at your rule. They could gather valuable information and, if necessary, destabilize their magic network."

Thalor's face hardened. "We could also make a show of force, a campaign of constant patrols throughout the city. "Show that any rebellion will be put down without mercy."

Lu Ming nodded slowly. "Do both. Lyra, deploy your agents. Thalor, organize the patrols. I want any attempt at rebellion to feel as impossible as scaling these walls with bare hands."

As his commanders retreated to carry out his orders, Lu Ming allowed himself a moment to consider the situation in Stone City. The dwarves, though beaten, were a proud race, and he had received reports that they were reinforcing their defenses. This could be a simple precaution.
