Chapter 102 - Left To Reflect

Void's gaze remained fixed on Mattheos, his expression a storm of righteous fury.

"To act as if you're a burden is to undermine Shadow's judgment, to suggest she was wrong in choosing you as her Fifth Seat."

"And don't even get me started on your lack of responsibility—keeping critical combat knowledge from your superior is not just a minor oversight; it's a grave error, especially in a division where every piece of information is crucial!"

"What happens if you were to truly lose control and Shadow had no idea you've got a Guardian? She'll be forced to kill you, buffoon! Are you going to put her through that misery?!"

His voice dropped to a fierce whisper, tinged with a cold edge.

"You should be grateful you're not under Venom's command. If you were, he would have disposed of you by now, probably within the first three days, without a second thought!"

Mattheos ceased his futile struggles against Void's grip, a profound realization settling over him. The weight of Void's words sunk in, and his emerald eyes clouded with deep shame.

He recalled, with piercing clarity, the immense sacrifices Mavislin had made to keep him alive—her unwavering commitment and the risks she had taken on his behalf.

As he pondered his earlier doubts about his worth in the Syndicate, a wave of self-reproach washed over him. What had he been thinking? To question Mavislin's judgment and doubt his place within the Syndicate was not just foolish but a betrayal of her trust and efforts.

He should have faced the truth with pride and transparency, embracing the role she had entrusted to him rather than wallowing in self-pity.

A deep sense of regret gnawed at him as he realized that he had squandered the opportunity to prove himself worthy. Instead of appreciating Mavislin's sacrifices and valuing his own contributions, he had allowed his insecurities to overshadow his potential.

The revelation left him feeling not only embarrassed but resolute to make amends and live up to the faith she had shown in him.

"Are you even aware that you're the only one allowed to call her by her real name among us? None of us would dare use Shadow's birth name out of respect and fear, yet you do it so casually."

"The last person who did that in the Covert Ops was silenced, and you act like it's no big deal. Clearly, you hold a special place with her, so maybe you should start valuing that instead of complaining."

"With that said, I'll take my leave before the Viceroy discovers I've been here," finished Void, dropping the bunny, as he quickly transformed into a black crow and left through the front door.

"I honestly need to check up on that tengu more often... I keep forgetting that being around Abyss is akin to being around an unhinged Zenos,' said the dragoness, releasing a breath and walking over to the rabbit.

"I thought the Viceroy was already unhinged... I can't imagine how Abyss would act," said Mattheos as he cracked his neck.

"Abyss was one of the hardest personnel I had to tame... Because of him, coaxing the Viceroy to treat me normally was like drinking plain water. Abyss was an unwanted newcomer because Raven couldn't control him. Then I took him in and the rest was history."

The dragoness then smiled before helping the rabbit to his bed, allowing him to rest on his bed. She then gently ruffled his hair while undoing his braids, just like how she did whenever Matt was knocked out from a battle.

"Don't let Void's harsh words get to you and focus on your recovery. Though some of his words may be the truth, he went about in a wrong way to tell you..."

"No, he was right and I deserved it. I will reform my thinking about myself and face you with confidence. Please... Don't give up on me just yet. And I am more than happy to accept your help in training my capacity to handle my Guardian," replied Matt, grabbing Mavislin's wrist.

Mavislin smiled as she finished taking off all of Matt's braids.

"I am not one to give up on my younglings. Besides, I took all that effort in training you, might as well see it through. Come now, close your eyes while I go check on the Viceroy."

"I snuck out without him noticing so he might throw a tantrum if he wakes up and I'm not there," joked the dragoness.

"For someone who prided herself on being all combat-driven and emotionless, with a touch of bloodthirstiness, you've got a surprising amount of compassion. But then again, I'm not about to complain..." murmured Mattheos as he slowly drifted off to sleep.

As Mavislin strolled through the hallways, she couldn't help but reflect on Arashi's words.
