Chapter 61 - Unbothered

"Crisis-class missions can be done solo by a seasoned combatant or a group of newcomers with a Seated member leading the charge. The difference starts when a mission suddenly turns into a Cataclysm-class," continued the dragoness as she sat beside Matt.

"From the decade that I've been active in the Syndicate, I have only seen less than ten and participated in seven instances of Cataclysm-class missions. As for the Apocalypse-class, I've only been and seen one that ended horribly."

"And it was the main reason why the Cartel got split into two."

"Are those that bad?" whispered Matt, in shock.

"The Cataclysm-class missions would've required at least five nations' worth of complaints, taken more than a few thousand lives, is an entity that can be from the Seat of Valour or all of the above."

"Unfortunately, the main reason why the mission about the Legion, fully called 'Enhanced Soldiers Mission', was because of multiple reports of 'entities' spawning. And it has taken more lives of the Syndicate's men plus taking down some of our stationed quarters."

"Thus, the First Seats have been given the green light to do whatever it takes to stop the Legion's progress. But between Raven, Venom, and I, we know an Apocalypse-class mission is about to occur."

"Whether or not we managed to clear that mission," explained Mavislin, with worry in her tone.

"What's wrong?" questioned Mattheos as his ears flopped down.

"When an Apocalypse-class mission occurs, it is our duty as the First Seats to send all Third Seat and below members back to their homes and make sure they do not attempt any mission until the storm clears."

"Meanwhile, the rest would be activated and we'd work together to overcome the threat. Another point to take note of is the overrule of permission; once a situation escalates to the second-highest rating on the danger scale, all First Seats can enter into an alliance."

"Even with outside forces like the Northern Cartel. To be fully honest, I was taking a huge gamble when I took a chance to be with the Viceroy, relying on the sheer luck that either I could make a compelling argument towards Beast or that the mission would escalate."

"And don't get me wrong; I'd prefer the first choice to occur…" elaborated the dragoness, closing her eyes.

"I am pleased that you have accepted our alliance. Though our danger classification system differs from yours, we face our own threats from the Legion. They've been encroaching on our territory and people, prompting my father to mobilize against them."

"I am not bothered about the casualties that surround me or the burning passion to seek vengeance but I still have to follow my father's directive."

The Viceroy fell silent as he glanced at Mattheos, who was starting to harbor anger towards the blonde.

"What is it? Why do you have such a foul face towards me?"

"You are not bothered about the many lives lost? And your actions as of late were nothing more than just 'follow your father'?! You don't even show a shred of…"

"Would you prefer it if I deceived you about my true stance on the issue? You're well aware of how I operate on the frontlines. You were the one who labeled me as a monster to Mavislin, so why indulge in such futile questions now? Or even show such a face?" quizzed Zenos.

"Because I want to know your resolve... You didn't just follow your father's commands during that siege. When you took down Nuas, you went out of your way to eradicate any opposing threats, even if they weren't at fault."

"And knowing my resolve would give you closure? Or will it allow you to see eye-to-eye with me? If my actions were to meet with your agreement, then would you still see me as a bloodthirsty warmonger? Or is it because of your petty reasoning of morals and honor?"

"My reasons are not petty! Have you no remorse for what you did?! There was no honor at all when you decided to destroy everything in Nuas!" roared the rabbit slamming the wooden table in anger.

To hell with making peace with this monster...

"No, I harbor no remorse, nor do I owe you an explanation for my actions. Your outrage and words are trivial to me because you cling to the notions of morality and honor."

"To me, these are mere instruments of convenience, wielded by those who seek to mask their true intentions. They are nothing but hollow declarations, employed to justify and fulfill one's deeper desires."

"They serve only to veil the true motivations behind the actions taken. If you seek to understand, realize that these ideals are not the guiding forces they appear to be, but rather tools for achieving personal aims."
