Chapter 10 - 10. First and last warning

After the intense confrontation, Alex took a deep breath, the weight of the situation pressing heavily on his shoulders. He knew he had to handle the matter delicately—Bella, his childhood friend, wasn't just a friend; her family had deep business ties with his own, and their parents shared a long-standing relationship. His feelings of anger were undeniable, but so was his sense of responsibility to his family's connections.

"Bella," Alex began, his tone firm but measured, "you need to understand that what you did today was completely unacceptable. Sophia is my wife, and I won't tolerate anyone disrespecting her, not even you."

Bella, who had initially been too stunned to speak, now looked at Alex with disbelief. "You're defending *her*? Over me? After everything we've been through?"

Alex sighed, his expression softening slightly, though his stance remained resolute. "This isn't about choosing sides. It's about right and wrong. You crossed a line today, Bella, and I can't just ignore that."

Bella's face flushed with a mix of anger and hurt, but she forced herself to stay composed. "I can't believe this," she muttered, shaking her head. "Ever since she showed up, everything has changed. You've changed."

"I haven't changed," Alex replied, his voice growing firmer. "But my priorities have. Sophia is my wife now, and that means she comes first. I need you to respect that."

Bella's eyes glistened with unshed tears, but she quickly blinked them away, unwilling to show any more vulnerability. "So, that's it? A simple warning and I'm supposed to just forget all of this? You're really choosing her over me?"

Alex remained silent for a moment, his gaze steady. He didn't want to escalate the situation further, knowing the delicate balance he had to maintain between his personal feelings and the business ties that bound their families. He couldn't risk severing the long-standing relationship between their families, but he also couldn't allow Bella's behavior to continue unchecked.

"You know I can't take this further, Bella," he finally said, his voice low but firm. "Our families are too closely tied, and I won't jeopardize that. But this is your only warning. If you ever come near Sophia like that again, there will be consequences—no matter our history."

Bella stared at him, her chest heaving with the effort to keep her emotions in check. She had never imagined that things would come to this, that Alex would choose someone else over her. She had always assumed that she had a special place in his life that no one else could fill. But now, everything felt like it was slipping away.

With a final, bitter look at Sophia, who was standing quietly by Alex's side, Bella turned on her heel and walked out of the house, her heart heavy with resentment. As she left, she couldn't shake the feeling that this was all Sophia's fault—that if it weren't for her, she and Alex would still be as close as ever.

Sophia watched Bella leave, a mixture of relief and guilt washing over her. She knew that the situation was far more complicated than she initially understood, and the last thing she wanted was to be the cause of any friction between Alex and his long-time friend.

"Alex," she began hesitantly once Bella was gone, "I'm sorry if I've caused any trouble between you two. I never wanted to come between you and your friends."

Alex shook his head, stepping closer to her and gently placing his hands on her shoulders. "This isn't your fault, Sophia. Bella has always been... protective of me, but that doesn't excuse her actions. What's important is that you're safe, and that she understands the boundaries now."

Sophia nodded, though she couldn't entirely shake the unease she felt. She could see the strain in Alex's eyes, the burden of balancing his personal life with his family's expectations and business interests. She reached out to touch his hand, offering him a small, reassuring smile. "Thank you for standing up for me," she said softly. "I know it wasn't easy for you."

Alex smiled back, though it was tinged with a certain weariness. "You don't have to thank me, Sophia. You're my wife, and it's my job to protect you. No one will hurt you as long as I'm around."

With that, he pulled her into a tender embrace, holding her close as if to reinforce the promise he had just made. Sophia rested her head against his chest, feeling a sense of security and comfort despite the tension of the morning.

As they stood together, the unresolved tension between them slowly began to dissipate, replaced by a growing understanding and trust. The morning's events had tested their fledgling relationship, but it had also shown them that they could face challenges together. And though the road ahead was still uncertain, they knew they could rely on each other.
