Chapter 1 - Escape

"You stinky brat! Come back here now or I'll kill you." The fruit vendor was shouting with a red face.

Two children, both dressed in brown rags, held some apples in their grasp tightly as fled the crime-scene.

On both sides of the dirt street, pedestrians looked at the two children as they ran down the street.

However, no one bothered stopping them. No one seemed to care that theft occurred. As the two children turned into the alley, the spectators continued to look in their direction.

Only then, a siren came around. Three cop cars were in chase of a black van, full of bullet holes.

Panic spread immediately, everyone fled to the corners of the street. Seemingly without regard, the black van swayed left and right crashing into the terrain around them.

Panic spread and screams filled the air as everyone tried to move out of the way.

The cop cars began to close in. "Pull over without your hand behind your head, otherwise we'll be forced to shoot."

"As if we won't die to a firing squad if we turn ourselves in. Do you think we are that gullible?" The man sitting in the back of the van replied to the police officers.

"Should we use it boss?" One of the officers in the front police car asked.

"I told you don't call me boss anymore, idiot. Call me Mr. Superintendent," replied the man next to him. The superintendent has a scar across his right eye. But his regal uniform made one think he suffered injustice. Few knew he inflicted it upon himself. "No need as of now, corner him into the alley."

"But what about the other end? Won't he escape?"

"That's why I'm the superintendent and you're just a loser, I mean lackey, I mean underling... never mind. But the alley becomes narrower the further one enters it. Soon enough they will find themselves unable to escape.

"As expected of your boss! Everything is under your control. I'll take action immediately."

Right after, the underling opened the window, took out a bazooka, and fired away at a construction sight with no workers 400 meters away. The black van was merely 200 meters in front. The bazooka took off and crashes into the scaffolding.

An explosion occurred, and a pile of debris and rubble began to fall and clog up the street ahead.

"Shit! What are we going to do captain?" The driver asked the man sitting in the back.

"Stay calm, there's still an alley up ahead. Turn left and enter it."

"Got it boss, I'm not sure what lies ahead but I'll trust you."

The black van turned, almost flipping over, as it entered the alley. It was barely big enough two cars to park side by side. However, for a car in a high speed chase with cops behind it, no amount of space for maneuvering would be extravagant.

As they turned, they saw two kids holding some apples, one girl and one boy looking their way in fright.

"aaaahh!" They began to scream as the van came in closer as they kept on running.

The driver looked ahead, bit his lips, and steeled his gaze as he pushed on the accelerator. The leader in the backseat was sweating. He looked out the window and could see the walls were moving. But they weren't moving backwards, they seemed to close in on him.

Thoughts raced through his mind, he could feel the prison walls closing in on him. Then he shouted, "Stop!!! We're exiting the car right now."

The driver, thinking his boss to be merciful said "Don't worry, only I am responsible for killing these kids." But as he said that, the lady in the seat next to him lifted her left food, and smashed down her high heel on his foot.

Owww, he yelled as he lifted his foot. The lady the pressed the breaks. The car came to a sudden stop as the car seemed almost ready to tip over. Merely 10 meters ahead lay two kids.

They cried on the floor as they awaited death. The boy had tripped, twisting his ankle. The girl sat next to him, unable to abandon him. As they saw the car stop, they felt their hearts pound.

Thump. Thump.

Thump. Thump.

Never had they been so close to death.

They saw a man and women exit from the front seats. The man wearing a vest with tattered boots. Clearly a mechanic. The woman wearing revealing clothes with high heels. Most likely a prostitute. But as they saw the last person come out from the back seats. He wore all black, from a black coat to a shrouded face.

Unable to discern who or what he was, the children sat there whimpering.

The dark man asked, "Hello children. We have spared your lives. And from the looks of it, you are the same as us. Thieves." The apples scattered across the floor were hard not to see.

"If you don't want to go to jail, tell us how to escape from this place."
