Chapter 35 - The One Who's Hated

After the intense battle with the God of Destiny, I needed a moment to regroup. The swirling storm of emotions from that fight still lingered in my mind—Celos's sacrifice, the shifting alliances, and the weight of the responsibilities ahead. But right now, I had something else on my mind. I decided to pay a visit to my team at the Nexus Realm.

As I arrived at the familiar domain, I was greeted by the sight of Zenith, Astra, Nyx, and Vulkan. They were all seated around a large round table in a room illuminated by a warm, golden light. Their faces lit up when they saw me, though I could tell they had questions.

"Sion!" Zenith called out, leaning back in his chair with a casual grin. "It's been a while. You've been busy, huh?"

Astra nodded, their piercing gaze never leaving me. "We sensed the ripples from your battle. It's not every day you go up against a being like the God of Destiny and live to tell the tale."

I took a moment, letting the memories play out in my mind. "It's been rough. The battle against the God of Destiny pushed us to the brink. But things took a turn… He's not our enemy anymore. Destiny's changed. He's on our side now."

Astra's brow furrowed as she exchanged a glance with Nyx. "Changed? How does someone like him just switch sides?"

"He saw the bigger picture," I explained, my voice heavy. "In the end, he realized that his obsession with controlling fate was flawed. After everything, he chose to help rather than hinder. But the cost was high… we lost someone important. Celos is gone. He sacrificed himself so Destiny could be free from his fatal wound."

Vulkan crossed his arms, letting out a low grunt. "Celos, huh? I didn't really get to know him, but from the sound of it, he was one of the good ones."

Nyx nodded solemnly. "It's always hard when someone gives up everything for the greater good. We'll remember him."

The conversation took a heavier tone as we continued discussing the battle, the shifting alliances, and the uncertainty ahead. But with Destiny's change of heart, the tension seemed to lessen. For now, at least, we had time to catch our breath.

A few days later...

The sun bathed the town of Edolas in its warm, golden light, casting long shadows across the cobblestone streets. The town was alive with activity, its market bustling with vendors and citizens engaged in their daily routines. It was a town that prided itself on its harmonious atmosphere and effective governance.

I was taking a rare break from my usual adventures, enjoying the lively ambiance of the market with Brianna and Destiny. Brianna, ever the enthusiast, was practically glowing with excitement.

"This is going to be amazing!" Brianna exclaimed, her eyes sparkling as she scanned the town's latest announcement. "The competition is open to all teams, and it's all about showcasing talents and communication skills to prove who would be the best leader for the town."

Destiny, who had been casually flipping through a magical tome, barely looked up. "I don't see why we're bothering with this. We have more pressing matters to attend to."

I shrugged, more interested in the market's offerings than the competition. "I'm not convinced this is worth our time. But if you're so keen on it, I suppose we can check it out."

Brianna clapped her hands together eagerly. "Great! We'll need to assemble a team and come up with a strategy. This is our chance to show what we can do."

As we continued to discuss our plans, a well-dressed town crier appeared in the center of the square, ringing a bell to announce important news. His voice echoed through the marketplace, drawing the attention of everyone present.

"Hear ye, hear ye! The town of Edolas is hosting its annual leadership competition! Teams are invited to demonstrate their talents, communication skills, and leadership qualities. The winning team will earn the right to lead our town for the coming year!"

The announcement was met with a buzz of excitement and curiosity. Brianna was practically bouncing with enthusiasm, while Destiny remained skeptical. I was still contemplating the decision when a new, unexpected presence made itself known.

Our casual planning was abruptly interrupted by a sudden shift in the atmosphere. The crowd parted as a figure emerged from the edge of the marketplace, his dark cloak billowing behind him like a shadow. The presence was imposing, radiating an aura of menace and authority that made the air itself seem to tense. I felt a shiver run down my spine, a cold dread settling in the pit of my stomach.

As the figure drew closer, I could see the unmistakable features of Nios, a name that sent ripples of unease through my mind. The last time I had encountered him, it had been a harrowing experience. His fearsome reputation and overwhelming power had left a lasting impression, one I had hoped never to face again. Yet here he was, a specter from my past rearing its head in Edolas.

The crowd seemed to sense the gravity of his presence and fell silent, their whispers a soft murmur as Nios approached. His smug grin was both unsettling and infuriating.

"Hello, Sion," Nios said, his voice smooth and taunting. It was as if he relished every moment of my discomfort. "It's been a while. I trust you're doing well?"

I clenched my fists, my anger bubbling to the surface. "What are you doing here, Nios? This is supposed to be a competition for leadership, not a stage for your games."

Nios's eyes gleamed with a mix of amusement and malice as he surveyed the town with a slow, deliberate gaze. "Ah, yes. The competition. I'm here to participate, of course. My team, the Deadly 5, has decided that we should take charge of this town. It seems like the perfect opportunity to showcase our skills and prove our dominance."

Brianna stood beside me, visibly shaken. Her usual confidence was replaced by a look of fear and uncertainty. Destiny, meanwhile, kept his cool but his eyes were sharp, full of disdain as he scrutinized Nios.

"You've got to be kidding me," Destiny said, his voice dripping with disbelief. "What makes you think you have any right to take over this town?"

Nios's grin widened, unfazed by the hostility. "Oh, I'm not here to conquer. I'm here to offer a proposition. Let's make this interesting. We'll engage in a series of battles and challenges. The team that emerges victorious will earn the title of leader. It's a fair competition, don't you think?"

His words hung in the air like a heavy fog, and I could feel the tension rising. The idea of facing his Deadly 5 in battle was daunting, to say the least. Nios's challenge was not just a personal affront but a direct threat to the town's stability. The very thought of him and his team asserting control over Edolas was enough to make my blood boil.

Brianna's hands were trembling as she looked up at me, her voice barely a whisper. "What do we do now, Sion?"

I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down despite the anger that was simmering within me. "We accept his challenge," I said firmly, my voice steady despite the storm of emotions inside me. "We'll show Nios and his Deadly 5 that we're not to be underestimated. We'll protect this town and prove that leadership is about more than just raw power—it's about the will to serve and protect."

Destiny nodded, his expression serious. "We'll need to gather our resources, assemble a solid team, and prepare for the battles ahead. This is going to be tougher than we anticipated."

Nios's grin never faltered as he prepared to leave. "Excellent. I look forward to the competition. May the best team win." His voice carried a note of dark satisfaction, and he turned, disappearing into the crowd with a sense of finality that left us all on edge.

We were no longer just participating in a competition; we were facing a formidable adversary with stakes far higher than anticipated. The competition had become a battleground for the future of Edolas, and the path ahead was fraught with uncertainty and peril.

The marketplace slowly began to buzz with activity again, but the sense of normalcy was shattered. Brianna and Destiny looked at me, their expressions a mix of determination and anxiety.
