I hadn't expected that to happen to us. Something was wrong. How had those slave traders known we were there? Could one of the soldiers have been working with them and tipped them off?
While I was captive, tied up on horseback, I had the chance to think about many things, but none of it mattered. I was afraid for my future, and even more afraid for Jennifer's. What would those monsters do to her? Where would they take us?
At some point during the journey, the slavers decided to remove the gag covering my mouth. It seemed they wanted to make small talk to lighten the mood.
"So, elf," their leader began, "we were very lucky to find you."
I retorted, "Lucky? I think it's more like you have contacts in the army."
The slave trader looked surprised. "You're pretty smart, not bad. Makes sense since you're an elf, and most elves are like that."
