Chapter 10 - Chapter 9: The Sea Dragons' Challenge, Part 1: Arrival and Tension

The day began like any other in Loto Village. The sun hung high in the sky, casting warm rays over the bustling community. The air was rich with the scent of sea salt and freshly grilled fish, promising another peaceful day. Villagers busied themselves with preparations for the evening's festivities, but the calm was shattered by a sudden cry from the lookout.

"Ship incoming! Big one!"

In an instant, the entire village turned toward the docks, curiosity morphing into excitement. Skydancer found himself caught up in the crowd, his heart pounding with anticipation. He had never seen the village so animated.

"Who's coming?" he asked, glancing down at Kavi, who was practically bouncing with excitement.

Kavi's eyes were wide with anticipation. "It's them—the Sea Dragons! Ratopa City's pro team! What are they doing here?"

The question hung in the air as the sleek, high-tech ship glided toward the docks, casting a shadow over the smaller village boats. The vessel gleamed in the sunlight, its dark blue and silver accents giving it a menacing aura. The Sea Dragons were legends throughout the region, and their unexpected arrival sent ripples of excitement—and unease—through the crowd.

Wakka appeared beside Skydancer, his expression a mix of wariness and intrigue. "They're not scheduled for an exhibition here," he muttered. "Something's up."

The Sea Dragons' ship slowed to a halt, and all eyes were fixed on it. With a hiss of steam, the ramp descended, and out strode Faria, the Sea Dragons' captain. Her fiery red hair stood out like a flame against the silver of her uniform, and her confident swagger drew the attention of everyone on the docks. Behind her, the rest of the Sea Dragons followed, each one imposing in their own right, their presence alone commanding respect.

Faria's eyes scanned the crowd until they landed on Kanu. A slow, predatory smile spread across her face as she approached, the villagers parting to let her through.

"Kanu," Faria said smoothly, her voice carrying just enough of a teasing edge. "Still playing village games, I see. Thought you'd have moved up to the big leagues by now."

Kanu's eyes narrowed, but a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. "I'm right where I need to be, Faria. But what brings you out here? Ratopa City not keeping you busy enough?"

Faria raised an eyebrow, clearly enjoying the banter. "Just thought I'd swing by and see if Lani and Roki have reconsidered joining us. It's a shame to see their talent wasted out here in the sticks." Her gaze flicked to Lani and Roki, who were standing behind Kanu. "You two should be playing with us, at the top of the league, where you belong."

Lani crossed her arms, a smirk of her own forming. "We've retired, Faria. You know that."

Roki, ever the silent partner, gave a small nod of agreement.

Faria let out a theatrical sigh. "Pity. You two were some of the best players I've ever seen below the top division. But," her eyes flicked back to Kanu, "maybe I've been keeping my eye on the wrong talent."

Kanu's expression hardened slightly, though there was perhaps a glimmer of interest in the offer, or perhaps in Faria herself. The two had known each other for years, having faced off in junior competitions since they were kids. There was always a competitive fire between them, but it was clear to anyone paying attention that Faria's interest in Kanu went beyond professional respect.

"You've got potential," Faria continued, her voice softening as she stepped closer to Kanu. "You've always had it. Imagine what you could accomplish with the right team backing you."

Kanu shrugged, his tone laced with playfulness. "I'm doing just fine with the Loto Divers. Besides, we're about to give you a run for your money."

Faria laughed, the sound genuine and bold, echoing across the docks. "Is that so? Well then, how about we make it official? A little challenge—Sea Dragons versus the Loto Divers. Let's see if your village team can hold up against the pros."

A murmur ran through the crowd, excitement buzzing at the prospect of a showdown between the two teams.

Wakka stepped forward, his presence cutting through the tension. "You're serious about this?"

Faria gave him a sharp nod. "Dead serious. We're here, and I've got my team ready. The question is—are you?"

Wakka scratched his chin thoughtfully, then grinned, a competitive glint in his eyes. "Alright, Faria. We'll take you on. But don't think for a second that we'll make it easy for you."

Faria's smirk returned. "I wouldn't expect anything less."

She turned to her ship, raising her hand in a signal. The crew responded quickly, moving with practiced precision. What happened next left the entire village in awe.

With a series of clicks and mechanical whirs, the ship began to transform. The dark hull split open, revealing a network of gears and hydraulics. Panels extended from the sides, unfolding like the wings of a great machine.

Hidden support arms emerged, reaching over the water to latch onto the deck, pulling it upward smoothly. The deck expanded and reshaped, turning the flat surface into a high-tech stadium rising from the water.

Sections of the hull unfolded into stands with seating, creating a viewing area for hundreds. The deck transformed into a playing field, with underwater goals emerging and floating platforms connecting by narrow walkways for players to move across the water.

The ship's mast retracted, replaced by curved pillars arcing over the field, supporting a transparent dome that enclosed the arena. As the final sections clicked into place, the arena glowed with a soft blue light, giving the field an ethereal appearance.

The villagers watched in stunned silence as the ship completed its transformation, the once-ordinary vessel now a cutting-edge Blitzball stadium hovering effortlessly on the water's surface. It was a spectacle unlike anything they had ever seen—an unmistakable display of the Sea Dragons' power, resources, and technological prowess.

Skydancer's jaw dropped. "Well, that's one way to make an entrance."

[Impressive, isn't it? They've got the tech, the skill, and the attitude. But don't let it get to you, mate. It's not the size of the boat that matters—it's how you use it.]

Skydancer chuckled under his breath. "Reckon we'll show them how it's done, Nexi?"

[Oh, we'll show 'em, alright. Just stay sharp.]

As the Sea Dragons and the Loto Divers prepared for the unexpected challenge, the crowd buzzed with excitement. The rivalry between Kanu and Faria was palpable, the tension between the two teams crackling in the air.

Faria flashed one last smile at Kanu. "Let's see if you can keep up."

Kanu's response was a slow nod, his focus already shifting to the game ahead. "We'll see who's left standing when it's over."

The stage was set, the players were ready, and the challenge was on.
