Chereads / Ethereal Genesis Online: Black Jade / Chapter 2 - Character Creations

Chapter 2 - Character Creations

The world that greeted Jada was breathtaking. She stood on a floating island, suspended high above a vast, ethereal landscape that stretched as far as the eye could see. Rivers of glowing blue water cascaded off the edges of the island, disappearing into the misty void below. Towering trees with leaves that shimmered in every color of the spectrum swayed gently in a nonexistent breeze. The sky above was a swirling mass of purples and pinks, dotted with unfamiliar constellations that sparkled like diamonds against velvet.

Ethereal Genesis Online was beautiful—there was no denying that. Jada couldn't help but feel a flicker of awe as she took in the scene, her jade eyes wide with surprise. The level of detail was incredible, far beyond anything she'd experienced in other games. Every blade of grass, every ripple in the water, seemed almost tangible, as if she could reach out and touch it.

Standing alone on the floating island, Jada felt a rare moment of peace. She had logged in ahead of Ember, eager to get a feel for the game before her girlfriend's inevitable exuberance pulled her into a whirlwind of activity. For now, this was her moment—a few precious minutes to herself in this digital paradise.

A soft chime echoed through the air, and a translucent menu appeared before her, hovering just at eye level.

"Welcome to Ethereal Genesis Online!" the text read, accompanied by a soft, melodic voice that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "Please proceed to character creation."

Jada sighed lightly, rolling her eyes as she navigated the menus with practiced ease. A series of prompts guided her through the customization process, offering a myriad of options to personalize her avatar.

The first step was to choose a race. Jada scanned the list, her eyes flicking over the usual options—Human, Elf, Dwarf—before something more intriguing caught her attention: Dark Faerie. The description was alluring: a mysterious and powerful race, Dark Faeries were known for their affinity with shadow magic and their ability to blend into the night. They were agile, quick, and had wings that allowed them to glide effortlessly through the air. The idea of having wings was particularly appealing, as it would give her the ability to avoid ground combat when she wanted to.

Without hesitation, Jada selected Dark Faerie. A new set of customization options appeared, allowing her to tweak her appearance further. She chose to keep her avatar similar to her real self—short and petite, with olive skin and long, wavy black hair—but with a few enhancements. Her skin took on a slightly more ethereal quality, a faint shimmer that hinted at her fae heritage. Her eyes, already jade-colored, became even more striking, glowing faintly with an inner light.

Her wings were the final touch. Jada selected a pair of sleek, dark wings, the feathers an iridescent black that shimmered with hints of purple and blue in the light. They were large enough to be imposing, but not so large as to be cumbersome. Perfect for the occasional escape.

Next came the clothing options. Jada selected a dark, flowing robe, the kind that any respectable spellcaster might wear. It was adorned with silver embroidery that shimmered faintly in the light, and a hood that she pulled low over her face, casting her features in shadow. Perfect for avoiding unnecessary attention.

With her appearance finalized, the menu prompted her to choose a class. Jada's eyes scanned the options with mild interest until she spotted "Sorceress" among the list. Intrigued, she selected it and read through the description. The Sorceress was a master of elemental magic, wielding the forces of nature with devastating precision. It was a class built for those who preferred to keep their enemies at a distance, relying on intelligence and strategy rather than brute strength.

Jada smirked, satisfied with her choice. If she had to play this game, she might as well do it in a way that suited her style—calculated, powerful, and with minimal physical effort.

As soon as she confirmed her class selection, another prompt appeared: "Please name your character." Jada paused for a moment, considering her options. After a brief moment of thought, she typed in "Black Jade." The name had a nice ring to it, a combination of her favorite color and a twist on her own name.

With her name chosen, the game presented her with a final prompt: "Would you like to enable individual or shared character creation?" Jada opted for individual, appreciating the privacy of tailoring her avatar without Ember's enthusiastic commentary.

As soon as she finished, the game transported her to a small, dimly lit chamber. The walls were lined with ancient runes that pulsed with a soft, rhythmic glow. In the center of the room stood a pedestal, atop which floated a glowing orb. Jada reached out instinctively, her hand passing through the orb's light, and a rush of information flooded her mind.

It was a tutorial of sorts, explaining the basics of her class's abilities. The Sorceress had access to a wide range of spells, each one more powerful than the last. Fireballs, lightning bolts, ice storms—Jada could conjure them all with a mere thought. She could also summon elemental spirits to aid her in battle, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. The more she practiced, the stronger her magic would become, allowing her to manipulate the very fabric of reality.

Jada absorbed the information quickly, her mind already planning how she might use these abilities to her advantage. Not in combat, of course—she had no intention of throwing herself into the fray unless absolutely necessary. But there were other ways to play the game, ways that involved less fighting and more clever maneuvering.

When the tutorial ended, Jada found herself back on the floating island, the world around her as vibrant and awe-inspiring as before. She lingered for a moment, taking in the serene beauty of the place before the next menu appeared, asking her to choose a starting location.

Jada paid closer attention this time. The options were varied and intriguing, each one offering a different experience: "The Enchanted Forest," "The Crystal Caves," "The Desert of Time," and many others. But one location stood out to her—"The Isle of Tranquility."

She selected it without hesitation, the name alone enough to convince her. If there was any place in this game where she could laze around undisturbed, it was bound to be there.

With a final click, the world around her shifted, the floating island fading into darkness as the game transported her to her chosen location. Jada felt the now-familiar sensation of falling, her body weightless as she descended into the unknown.

When she opened her eyes again, she found herself standing in the middle of a serene, sunlit meadow. Tall grass swayed gently in the breeze, and the sound of birdsong filled the air. In the distance, she could see a small cottage, smoke curling lazily from its chimney. The Isle of Tranquility was everything she'd hoped for—peaceful, quiet, and utterly devoid of anything that might require effort.

Jada took a deep breath, letting the tranquility of the place wash over her. For the first time since logging in, she felt herself relax completely. This was her haven, her sanctuary. Here, she could finally take it easy.

Just as she was about to settle in, a familiar voice echoed through the air, breaking the peaceful silence.

"Jada! Over here!"

Jada turned to see Ember running toward her, her avatar as bright and energetic as her real-world counterpart. Ember had chosen the "Valkyrie" class, a powerful melee fighter with abilities that boosted her strength and agility. She had also selected the Angel race to match her Valkyrie class, giving her a pair of majestic, glowing wings that contrasted sharply with Jada's dark, ethereal ones. Her avatar was taller and more athletic, clad in shining armor with a massive sword strapped to her back. Her platinum blonde hair flowed freely as she moved, and her tangerine eyes glowed with a fierce determination.

"Nice look," Ember said with a grin, giving Jada an appreciative once-over. "You ready to take on the world?"

Jada shrugged, feigning indifference. "Sure, why not. Let's just get this over with so I can go back to napping."

Ember laughed, the sound as bright and carefree as ever. "You're impossible, you know that? But that's okay. I'll drag you through every level if I have to."

Jada rolled her eyes, but there was a fondness in her gaze that she couldn't quite hide. "Yeah, yeah. Just try not to get us killed before we even get started."

Ember struck a pose, her wings flaring out behind her. "Please, who do you think you're talking to? I'm Embers, the Valkyrie of the Angelic Order. We'll be fine."

Jada couldn't help but smile at the name choice—Embers was so perfectly Ember. "Alright, Embers. Let's see what kind of chaos you drag us into."

With their characters fully created and ready to go, the two set off to explore the Isle of Tranquility. Jada couldn't help but chuckle as Ember immediately began searching for any sign of adventure, while she herself was more interested in finding the perfect spot to relax.

But even as she settled in, a small part of her couldn't shake the nagging feeling that her peace wouldn't last. Ember was already talking about heading to the next zone, where the real action was, and Jada knew it was only a matter of time before she was dragged into whatever chaos her girlfriend managed to find.

Jada sighed, glancing up at the sky. "Guess I should enjoy this while I can," she muttered to herself, already picturing the whirlwind that was her girlfriend crashing into her quiet little paradise.

For now, though, she was content to simply bask in the calm, knowing that the storm was inevitable, but not quite here yet.
