Chapter 4 - Memorable

Three Years Ago

At Brian's Apartment

The twenty-two-year-old future President of a leading cosmetics company and the only child of his parents was heartbroken. He just discovered that Jane Miller, his girlfriend whom he fancied no doubt but it was unrequited love had not reserved herself for him as he had done for her.

"So, she had been sleeping with other men?" He thought bitterly and wiped away his tears.

To avoid more sorrow for himself, he decided to quietly call off their friendship. Meanwhile, Mr. David Cameron, his thirty years old cook just got married and needed time to be with his wife. To alternate his workdays, he decided to employ another chef. Howbeit, his father preferred a female.

When Jane learned about it, she felt threatened. Based on their bickering over her unfaithfulness, she concluded that he wished to get a girlfriend for himself in disguise as a chef.

"I thought we were through with this after my apologies, Brian. Why are you alluding to it again?" She pointed out.

"Alluding to what? What has my employing a chef got to do with our discussions?" Brian asked.

"Why do you suddenly wish to employ a chef and why a female?"

To Brian, discussing his family matter with her was not the best but he maintained his ground.

"That is my choice," he responded dismissively.

"Then, I insist on getting her by myself. You can't refute that if you don't have any ulterior motive," she proposed.

Brian laughed and accepted, "Please yourself."

Jane was enthralled and tried to hug him but he pushed her away.

"What do you want to do, Jane? I don't want intimacy until after marriage. Don't you get it?"

She gave him a seductive look and apologized, "I got it. I hope you are no more mad at me?"

He pulled her nose and stated, "You know I will always forgive you if you stop being naughty."

"I will be a good girl."

"Promise?"

"I promise. I will get a good cook that cannot come between us for you."

"That will be fine," he acknowledged without knowing what she had in mind.

To sustain their relationship, she resolved to get her naive half-sister whom she could manipulate for him as a chef.

"He can sleep with her as his toy if he wants instead of another girl who may take him away from me," she reasoned.

A Few Days Later

At The Government Hospital

"Good morning, Dr. Summer," the despondent Miss Valerie Miller greeted the Medical Director when she walked into his office.

Without responding to her greetings, Dr. Patrick Summer asked with levity, "Have you raised the funds for your mother's treatment, Young Lady?"

"Not at all, doctor, and I wish you could assist me further," she pleaded with a melancholic tone.

Meanwhile, the doctor was bored with her incessant plea for help and ignored her. After waiting for his response and getting none, she walked dejectedly to her mother's ward to check on her. To her despair, she was still lying helplessly with life support gadgets just as she was the day she was admitted to the hospital five months ago. Afterward, she left in hopelessness. Oblivious of her environment, she journeyed on foot back to her house. She only realized that she walked a distance of three kilometers when she heard her step-sister's voice.

At The Paschal Miller Family House

"What? You look deranged, Valerie. Where are you coming from?" she asked with fake concern.

With a worn-out voice, she responded, "From the hospital, of course."

"This is crazy. Did you journey from the hospital to the house on foot?"

Presently, Valerie needed to rest before attending to her sick father. She sat on the balustrade on the balcony and answered absent-mindedly, "Whatever."

"Oh, my God! That is too much for you. I'm certain that you did the same when you went."

"What do you expect?"

"Huh! If I may ask, how is your mother's condition?"

"I wish I could say it is good," she responded in despair.

"I understand how you feel, Valerie but I can be of help if you permit me," Jane proposed.

Instantly, Valerie's eyes widened with expectations and she asked, "Really?"

"Certainly. If only you are ready to accept the offer."

At that point, she got down from the balustrade and inched closer to her.

"You can count on me, Jane. I will do anything legitimate to raise money for Dad's and my Mom's health," she promised.

Nevertheless, Jane sized her up. When she determined her level of desperation, she stated casually, "Well, I pray that you don't mess things up," and tried to walk away.

To stop her from leaving, Valerie held her dress tightly and pleaded, "Jane, I promise that I will not. Just let me know what to do."

"I'm only trying to be helpful. I hope you are aware of that?"

"I got you. Kindly let me hear the offer," she requested and entreated her not to walk away.

"Okay. A friend needs a cook and would pay handsomely. If you are willing to accept the offer, I will link you up," she stated and threatened to walk away again but Valerie held her tighter.

She smiled softly and accepted, "This is good to hear, Jane. I'm ready to resume at once."

"Promise me that you will do anything that you are asked to do."

"I promise. I will not disappoint you."

She scanned her again and advised, "In that case, you need to take your bath and put yourself together. He will not accept a disheveled cook."

"Oh! Are you talking of a 'he'?" She asked in bewilderment.

Jane furrowed her brow and answered, "Yes, of course. Do you have an issue with that?"

"Not at all. I will get ready at once," she accepted and ran off.

Likewise, Jane scowled at her and smirked in triumph.

"Stupid girl. I will see how you would be considered a good girl by Father after you stop taking care of him," she stated and left for her room to dress up as well.

Afterward, she returned to the balcony. Valerie joined her after a while and met her on a call.

Instantly, she summarized the call, "Okay, Brian. We will be with you shortly."

Thereafter, she looked critically at the dressed-up Valerie and praised her, "Better but you need some fragrance."

Valerie gave her a puzzled look and asked, "Do you mean cookery book or fragrance?"

"Oh, Pardon my forgetfulness," she smiled broadly and apologized

"It is all right."

"Let's go," she requested and took a step.

"I hope we won't be long. Father will need my attention soon."

Jane and her mother, Magdalene hated her father. She frowned when she heard 'father' and answered according to her belief, "Of course."

"Good," the desperate Valerie accepted and followed her without more questions.

At Brian's Apartment

His father loved him so much and he loved him too. As an heir apparent, he showed much enthusiasm in the family business very early. Not only that, he has the attributes of a worthy successor and kept his eyes on the ball. In his quest to expand their business, he resolved to bring the company to the grassroots. Therefore, he socialized with the locals in the suburbs and introduced their products, which were for the higher-ups. Previously, his father was against that because the lower class could not afford their products, and he loved it that way. Nevertheless, Brian was able to convince him by requesting that the quality of the product be reduced and sold at an affordable price to the locals.

"Dad, you have to reconsider your stand," he pleaded.

"Why should we waste our energy on the locals and cheap products when our goods are in high demand by the higher-ups? Besides, we hardly meet their increasing demand," his father pointed out but he persisted.

"I am aware of that, Dad. This is my business strategy. If we don't capture their interests, our competitors will do that and take over the market. After all, it will not cost much to do that."

After much consideration, his father agreed with him, and the cheap versions of their products — F&B Garfield Cosmetics were produced. Just like they envisaged, it gave the locals a sense of belonging and the company got enough patronage. Once in a while he would organize and sponsor a carnival in the name of the company. Howbeit, a lot of the local youths loved it and attended in their numbers. Likewise, some girls were regular at such events just to butter him up. On such occasions, he became acquainted with Jane and other girls but was careful not to be intimate with them.

After his call with Jane that Friday morning, Brian left his office at once with his strong security squad. Soon, they were at his expensive, impressive, Garfield Estate.

Although he loved Jane, he refused to be physical with her because he reserved that for his wedding night. Nevertheless, they had different perceptions about sex. She thought that it could take place anytime, anywhere, and with anyone. At twenty-one, she was sexually active, just like her mother and it was obvious that she inherited that lifestyle from her mother. Three Years Ago
