"Just one more push," a man squatting down in front of a woman said, slightly muffled by the mask he was wearing.
"Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh,' the woman screams in pain.
When the woman's screams were done, there was a deafening silence. The silence was not long. The cry of a newborn baby filled the room.
"It's a boy," the doctor said with a sigh of relief because of another successful birth.
Joy filled the room. The joy and tiredness could be seen on the woman's face, who was screaming in pain just moments ago. The two nurses in the room who were helping the doctor deliver the baby got busy cleaning up the child and preparing to cut the umbilical cord. As soon as these things were finished, one of the nurses turned to the woman, "Ms. Gale, here is your baby boy. Congratulations!"
"My baby," she said weakly as if she were about to fall asleep.
Gale was holding the baby on her chest and gently patting his back. Her eyes opened wide suddenly and began to glow green. The glow was swirling in her eyes.
"She has a trash Ability. Great, more trash in the world," The nurse thought, shanking her head when he saw Gale's power.
The two nurses finished up checking all the vital, both on the mother and child. Then both nurses went out the door. The last one stopped before leaving, looking back at Gale holding the child.
"You might be trashy but at least you can have some joy before going back into the cruel world," the nurse said with a heavy sigh, feeling sorry for her.
She saw glimpses of the baby's life flash before her eyes. Images were appearing like a slideshow, with each image fading into another. The last image was one of a man in a suit of black medieval armor with dark purple edges. One hand on top of another, resting on the hilt of a sword that was stuck into the ground in front of him.
Not knowing what any of this meant, Gale said in relief, "Eric, you'll be ok... You'll be just fine,' while she kept gently patting the baby's back.
________
Knock, knock!
"Coming!"
Less than ten seconds.
Knock, knock!
"I said I was co...," she stopped abruptly after swinging the door open and seeing who was in front of her.
A tall man with short brown hair parted to the side stood in front of her straight and firm. None of that meant anything to her. What she noticed that stopped her mid-sentence was his uniform. It was a solid slate gray color with a patch on the left side of his chest. What could the military want? Even worse, what is the problem that brings the military here?
"O, I'm so sorry….uh…Sergeant," she said nervously.
"Yes, ma'am. I am Sergeant McKenny. Are you Gale Carson?" He said it with a very robotic voice as if he said the same thing a thousand times.
"Yes, Sir. That's me," Gale said, not trying to sound nervous.
"I have an urgent message. Due to the two southern territories engaging each other, all seniors in school will be reporting to the military academy to prepare for military service. During the first semester, they will have extra exposure to radiation to open up their abilities quickly. Then normal training for what is to come. In the second semester, they will go into active duty. They will be posted where the faction determines it is necessary. The class will begin at 6 a.m. in 30 days at the northwest territory capital, New Cleveland. The Military Shuttle bus will be here in fifteen days if you need transportation. This is mandatory for Eric Carson. That is all. Good day, ma'am."
The sergeant immediately turned around and began leaving. As soon as his first step down from the small front porch was taken, "This is early for children to go into battle, don't you think?" Gail tried to get her words in before he was gone.
"Ma'am, with all due respect. War waits for no one. Let's just hope he will make a good soldier. Not much good comes out of this area but shields," he said without even turning around. Right after his last words, he was on his way again.
Gale closed her eyes and took a deep breath in frustration mingled with anger trying to calm down. When she opened her eyes he was gone. It was like he vanished.
She is so tired of being talked down to. She has tried all she can. Not having useful abilities or lots of money means you are nothing. People have no control over what power they get, so why do they get treated like vermin? She has many times tried to get her other children to all come together and try to make something of themselves together, but the answer is always the same. 'No, we're going to look after ourselves.'
Gale closed the door with a sigh of depression and said to herself, "There is nothing I can do about it."
She believes that too. Only because she has tried all she can to change the world. Her power was chronvision. She can see the future, sometimes, when she touches people or things. But only the future of that person or thing. Very rarely she can see the past. She has tried to change the future from her visions for the better. No matter how much she tried she noticed she never changed the outcome.
This was considered to be a trash ability. The reason why is the ability cannot be controlled. It also never seems to be helpful to others. If the vision was bad and she told the person about Pam then they ended up blaming her for the outcome. They never thought she was trying to help.
She walked up to a closed door on the other end of the house. she stood there thinking about everything. What could go wrong, what could go right? Thinking about all the possibilities.
"You are my only hope. Not for me, but for one good thing to happen because of me," Gale thought.
She lifted her hand to the door and sighed. Knock, knock.
"Yes!"
"Eric, honey, can I come in? I have some news for you."
