Chapter 243 - Chapter 243: Misdirection Part 6

By the time police finally arrived on the scene, they found three of the five individuals dead, with Harley casually sitting in the living room, watching some old cartoons.

"Gotta love the classics. Oh, you guys are finally here. What took ya so long?" Seeing the Gotham PD, Harley got up from the stained brown couch and skipped over before pointing toward the bodies.

"You're going to need to write a report, right? So, these guys tried to rape some innocent girls, and I caught them red-handed, but they fought back. So, I had no choice but to use force..."

As the two officers who arrived at the door listened, they looked at Harley with suspicious gazes. However, she kept ranting about how the fight had gone.

Ever since she became one of Gotham's premier heroes, her interactions with the Gotham PD had increased exponentially. In fact, she was perhaps the most interactive. This meant many officers had grown used to her antics. The many headaches she gave the Commissioner were well known among officers.

Although he had no love for criminals, murderers, rapists, and the like, the Commissioner respected the law greatly, almost to a religious degree. So, during the beginning, he and Harley would often clash.

But there wasn't much he could do about her. It was better to have her handling criminals than to have her as one. Considering how she was now under the Commissioner's oversight, he was a bit biased toward her actions, and numerous officers knew this.

After Harley was finally done talking, she didn't even bother staying as officers began to walk in and collect clues and evidence they could use against the two young men still alive.

They also called for an ambulance once they caught sight of just how much damage Harley had done to these two young men's groins. As for Harley, she happily skipped out of the building to go rendezvous with Diana.

As she left, the two officers looked at each other, with one asking, "It's your turn to report."

"No way! I reported her last week. I'm not going to meet with the Commissioner and tell him what happened. You are!"

"I wasn't even listening to half of what that crazy dame was saying."

"Rock, paper, scissors?"

"Rock, paper, scissors."

The rendezvous point turned out to be one of the numerous medical camps that had been set up in and around Gotham to treat people who had succumbed to the spores. There, one could see numerous police officers, medical personnel, and even volunteers helping victims in various ways.

Superman and Flash had also rendezvoused there because it was where the Commissioner was based, along with a lot of media demanding answers. The person at the forefront was Vicki Vale. She was currently chasing after the Commissioner as he walked toward a set of vehicles with his officers in tow.

"Commissioner, Commissioner, would you like to comment on the attack? Is Gotham not as safe as Arias Markovic stated it to be? Or was this just a lapse in judgment from the police? Commissioner? The people would like an answer," Vicki Vale persisted.

One of the officers tried to hold her back as the Commissioner was about to enter the vehicle. However, before he could, Superman flew over, with Flash soon zipping onto the scene and stopping right behind him.

Seeing the duo, the Commissioner let out a tired sigh. It had already been a very stressful day for him, and dealing with superheroes and villains was the last thing he wanted.

Superman didn't mince his words nor did he try to hide his concern as he outright asked the Commissioner, "Do you allow the heroes under your department to kill people as they see fit?"

All eyes were on Superman as he said this. The Commissioner frowned. What immediately came to mind was an image of Harley, and he couldn't help but rub his temples.

He was fine with letting her actions slide every now and then, as long as it was kept under wraps and the criminals were dangerous. However, with Superman and Flash in Gotham, the situation might blow up.

Not wanting to come across as unaware, the Commissioner answered somewhat honestly, "Well, that depends. Self-defense? Was it in order to save a civilian? If so, then yes. But if the criminal was defenseless or surrendered, then no, we do not allow that."

Superman's frown deepened as he looked at the Commissioner. Unknown to the Commissioner, Superman was using his super hearing to listen to the man's heartbeat. If it grew faster, Superman would know he was lying.

However, the Commissioner remained calm, so his words were likely the truth. This made Superman ease his expression. Looking around, he noticed that a crowd was gathering. Vicki Vale, somewhat aware of what was being said, couldn't help but shadow Superman.

"Superman, what do you mean?" Not wanting to cause a public spectacle, Superman didn't say anything else except, "You should reconsider the heroes your department supports."

Having said that, Superman flew away, and the Flash soon zoomed off without adding anything. After the duo left, Wonder Woman arrived on the scene—but she didn't come alone.

As she hovered in the air above the camp, she held the headless body of the man she had slain.

"Good people of Gotham, let it be known today that I, Diana, Princess of Themyscira, have slain this man for his attempts at forcing himself upon a woman who was weakened by these spores."

Having said this, Diana threw the body onto the ground, causing numerous gasps from those present. Even the Commissioner couldn't help but look surprised. The police officers were frozen in place and didn't know how to react. They simply looked up at Commissioner Gordon for direction.

The Commissioner didn't know how to proceed from here and inwardly wished that Arias were there to control these two. But Vicki's eyes lit up, and she quickly told the cameraman to point the camera toward the body and then to Diana. Vicki then questioned Wonder Woman, "Wonder Woman, what's the meaning of this? What happened? Can I get an exclusive?"

Diana gave a proud nod as she put her hands on her hips and declared, "Of course. I feel that I need to send a message to criminals everywhere that crime in Gotham will no longer go unpunished."
