Chapter 7 - 07| Expectations

The days passed in a blur of intense training and self-reflection. Li Mei threw herself into her studies with renewed vigor, determined to prove that she could rise to the challenges that lay ahead. Despite the setback with Qiao Ling, she felt a growing connection to the celestial forces within her. Each day, her control over the starlight improved, and she began to feel more confident in her abilities.

But as her training progressed, so too did the pressure. The weight of expectations, both from Elder Tian and the other disciples, loomed over her like a dark cloud. Li Mei could sense their judgment, their scrutiny, every time she entered the training grounds. Some of the disciples watched her with curiosity, while others seemed indifferent or even hostile. The tension was palpable, and it only fueled her desire to succeed.

One morning, after another exhausting session with the Celestial Mandala, Elder Tian approached Li Mei with a serious expression. She had been sitting beneath the Astral Tree, catching her breath and reflecting on the morning's lessons when he appeared beside her, his presence commanding as always.

"Li Mei," he began, his tone gentle but firm, "there is something we must discuss."

Li Mei looked up, her heart skipping a beat at the gravity in his voice. "Yes, Elder Tian?"

"You have made great progress," he said, his eyes meeting hers with a rare softness. "Your connection to the stars is growing stronger, and you are beginning to understand the principles of Astral Sorcery. But there is more to being a disciple of the Celestial Mountain Sect than just power and technique. There are responsibilities, duties, and expectations that come with the path you have chosen."

Li Mei nodded slowly, feeling a knot of anxiety form in her stomach. She had known this day would come—the day when her responsibilities would extend beyond her own training. But the thought of it was still daunting.

"The elders have been watching your progress closely," Elder Tian continued, his gaze unwavering. "They believe you have the potential to become one of the sect's most promising disciples. But with that potential comes great responsibility. You will be expected to uphold the values of the sect, to represent us with honor and integrity. And you will also be expected to take part in missions that may put you in harm's way."

Li Mei's heart pounded in her chest as his words sank in. Missions? The idea of venturing outside the safety of the sect, of facing real dangers, was both thrilling and terrifying. She had heard stories of the missions the senior disciples undertook—battles against rogue cultivators, the retrieval of ancient artifacts, and even confrontations with dark forces that threatened the balance of the world. It was a far cry from the controlled environment of the training grounds.

"I understand," Li Mei said, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her insides. "I'm ready to do whatever is required of me."

Elder Tian studied her for a moment, as if assessing her resolve. "You must be certain, Li Mei," he said quietly. "The path ahead is not an easy one. It will test you in ways you cannot yet imagine. But if you remain true to yourself and to the teachings of the sect, you will grow stronger with each challenge."

Li Mei nodded again, more firmly this time. "I'm certain," she replied. "I chose this path, and I will see it through."

Elder Tian's expression softened slightly, and he gave her a small nod of approval. "Very well. There is a mission that has come to the attention of the elders—a matter that requires immediate attention. I believe this will be a good opportunity for you to test your abilities in the real world."

Li Mei's breath caught in her throat. A mission? Already? She had expected to have more time to prepare, more time to hone her skills before being sent out into the world. But she knew better than to question Elder Tian's judgment. If he believed she was ready, then she had to trust in his decision.

"What is the mission?" she asked, trying to keep her voice calm.

"There have been reports of disturbances in a nearby village," Elder Tian explained. "Strange occurrences—people disappearing, shadows moving where they shouldn't, and a sense of unease that has settled over the area. The village elder has requested the assistance of the Celestial Mountain Sect to investigate and, if necessary, to put an end to whatever is causing the disturbance."

Li Mei felt a shiver run down her spine. The description was vague, but she could sense the seriousness of the situation. Disturbances like these were often signs of dark forces at work—forces that could be dangerous, even deadly.

"I will accompany you on this mission," Elder Tian continued, his tone reassuring. "But you will take the lead. This will be your chance to prove yourself, to show the elders that you are ready to take on the responsibilities of a disciple."

Li Mei swallowed hard, her mind racing. The opportunity to prove herself was exactly what she had been striving for, but the reality of it was overwhelming. She had trained tirelessly for this moment, but now that it was here, doubt crept in. What if she wasn't ready? What if she failed?

But there was no room for doubt, not now. She had chosen this path, and she had to walk it with confidence, no matter how uncertain the future seemed.

"I understand," she said, her voice firm with resolve. "I won't let you down, Elder Tian."

Elder Tian nodded, his expression softening into something that might have been pride. "I have faith in you, Li Mei. Remember what you have learned, and trust in your connection to the stars. They will guide you, as they always have."

He turned to leave, but then paused, as if remembering something. "One more thing," he said, his voice carrying a hint of warning. "Qiao Ling will also be joining us on this mission. The elders believe it will be beneficial for you to work together, to learn from each other. I trust there will be no issues?"

Li Mei's heart sank at the mention of Qiao Ling. The memory of their sparring match was still fresh in her mind, the sting of defeat and the sense of rivalry between them unresolved. But she knew she had no choice in the matter. She had to put aside her personal feelings and focus on the mission.

"There won't be any issues," she replied, forcing a smile. "We'll work together."

Elder Tian gave her a final nod, then turned and walked away, leaving Li Mei alone beneath the Astral Tree. The weight of the mission settled over her, a mix of excitement and fear swirling in her chest. This was her chance to prove herself, to show that she was more than just a newcomer, more than just a girl marked by the stars.

But the thought of working with Qiao Ling added a layer of complexity to the task ahead. She couldn't deny the tension between them, the rivalry that had sparked from their first encounter. Qiao Ling was skilled, confident, and experienced—everything that Li Mei aspired to be. But there was also a darkness in Qiao Ling, a sharp edge that made Li Mei wary.

As she sat in the dappled sunlight beneath the Astral Tree, Li Mei closed her eyes and reached out with her spirit, seeking the connection to the stars that had become her guiding light. The warmth of the celestial energy filled her, calming her nerves and steadying her thoughts.

She was ready for this. She had to be.

With a deep breath, Li Mei rose to her feet, the resolve in her heart burning brighter than ever. The mission awaited, and with it, the first true test of her abilities.

The path ahead was uncertain, fraught with dangers and challenges she couldn't yet see. But she was ready to face it, to prove that she belonged in the Celestial Mountain Sect.

And perhaps, in doing so, she would finally earn the respect of her peers—and of Qiao Ling.

As the morning sun climbed higher in the sky, casting long shadows across the courtyard, Li Mei set off to prepare for the mission that would determine her place in the world of cultivation.
