The sun hung low in the sky as Alex gathered his thoughts, the ominous weight of Ethan's letter pressing down on him. He couldn't let fear control his actions. Every moment they delayed could bring Ethan closer. It was time to act.
Victor returned from his phone calls, his face a mask of grim determination. "I've spoken to my contacts. They've managed to gather a few leads on Ethan's whereabouts, but nothing concrete yet. However, they did spot someone matching his description moving between safe houses in the outskirts of the city."
Alex clenched his fists, feeling the rush of adrenaline course through his veins. "Good. It's time we turn the tables on him."
Victor raised an eyebrow. "You have a plan?"
Alex nodded, pacing back and forth across the living room. "If Ethan wants a fight, then we give him one—but on our terms. I'll lure him out, make him think I'm vulnerable. We need to stage a meeting, make it look like I'm alone, unprotected. Once he takes the bait, we close in on him."
Isabella, who had been quietly listening from the couch, suddenly stood up. "Alex, this is dangerous. You can't just walk into a trap, even if you're setting it."
Alex walked over to her, gently taking her hands. "I know it's risky, but this might be the only way to end this once and for all. I can't let him keep threatening us, Isabella. He'll never stop until we stop him."
She looked into his eyes, fear and love warring within her. "Promise me you'll be careful."
"I promise," Alex said, squeezing her hands reassuringly. "I'm not doing this alone. Victor will be with me, and I'll have backup nearby. We'll have eyes on the whole area."
Victor chimed in, his voice calm and confident. "I've already contacted a few trusted people. We'll have a team in place, watching every angle. Ethan won't see us coming."
Alex turned to Victor, a grateful smile crossing his face. "Thank you."
Victor nodded, his expression serious. "Anything for you and your family."
The tension in the room thickened as they discussed the finer details of the plan. They decided on an abandoned construction site at the edge of town—an isolated location that would be easy to control. Alex would arrange for a fake meeting, pretending to broker some kind of truce with Ethan. Meanwhile, Victor's team would be hidden in place, ready to strike as soon as Ethan appeared.
Hours passed as they finalized every aspect of the plan. By the time the sun had fully set, the trap was ready. Alex could feel the pressure mounting, but he stayed focused. This had to work.
Before leaving, Alex took a moment to kiss Isabella and the twins. Isabella held him close, her voice soft with worry. "Just come back to us, Alex."
"I will," he promised, holding her for a few more moments before finally pulling away.
With a final glance at his family, Alex and Victor left the house, driving into the darkening night.
The abandoned construction site loomed ahead, its skeletal structure a perfect backdrop for the trap they were about to set. The cold wind swept through the empty streets, adding to the eerie silence that surrounded them.
Alex stepped out of the car, his heart pounding as he surveyed the area. Victor and his team had already taken their positions, hidden in strategic locations around the site. The tension in the air was palpable, but Alex remained calm.
He pulled out his phone, typing a quick message to Ethan, knowing the man was watching for any sign of weakness.
"Meet me at the construction site. Let's end this."
He hit send, his breath catching in his throat as he waited. The minutes ticked by, each one stretching longer than the last. Finally, his phone buzzed with a single reply.
"I'll be there."
Alex's pulse quickened. It was time.
As he stood alone in the center of the empty site, the distant sound of footsteps echoed across the concrete. His eyes scanned the darkness, searching for any movement.
Then, from the shadows, Ethan emerged.
He looked different—haggard, worn down by the constant running and hiding. But the malicious glint in his eyes remained unchanged. He smiled, a twisted, dark grin that sent a chill down Alex's spine.
"So," Ethan sneered, stepping closer. "You really thought you could trick me? I've been watching you, Alex. Always one step ahead, just like old times."
Alex kept his face neutral, his hands steady at his sides. "It's over, Ethan. Surrender now, and we can end this without more bloodshed."
Ethan laughed, the sound harsh and cruel. "Surrender? You're a fool if you think I'll go down that easily. You took everything from me, Alex. Now, I'm going to take everything from you."
Alex took a step forward, his voice low and dangerous. "You won't touch my family."
Ethan's eyes flashed with fury. "We'll see about that."
As the words left Ethan's mouth, he lunged forward, pulling a gun from his coat. But before he could pull the trigger, the sound of footsteps surrounded him. Victor and his team emerged from the shadows, their weapons drawn and trained on Ethan.
Ethan froze, his eyes darting around as he realized he had walked right into the trap.
"It's over," Victor said, his voice calm but firm. "You've lost."
Ethan's hand trembled, the gun slipping from his grip as he finally understood the gravity of his situation. He had no way out. Alex watched as the weight of defeat settled over Ethan's face.
The police arrived moments later, taking Ethan into custody without incident. As they led him away, Alex felt a strange mixture of relief and exhaustion wash over him. It was finally over.
Victor approached, clapping a hand on Alex's shoulder. "You did it."
Alex nodded, his eyes still focused on the spot where Ethan had stood. "We did it."
As the night air cooled around them, Alex allowed himself to breathe for the first time in what felt like weeks. The shadows of the past had finally been vanquished, and for the first time in a long while, he felt at peace.
