Chapter 43 - Back to Reality

The plane ride back to Tokyo was quiet, but it wasn't the uncomfortable silence they had shared in the past. Instead, it was filled with a sense of mutual understanding, the kind of calm that came after a storm had finally passed. Isabella gazed out of the window, watching the ocean stretch out below them, her hand resting gently in Alex's.

Her thoughts drifted back to the week they had spent together on the island. It felt like a dream—a dream where the pressures of their complicated lives had melted away, leaving only the two of them. But as they neared Tokyo, reality slowly crept back in. The challenges they had put on hold still lingered on the horizon: their public marriage, Alex's business, and the inevitable presence of Sophie, who had never quite stepped aside.

When they landed, Alex turned to her, his expression unreadable. "Are you ready?" he asked, his voice low.

Isabella nodded, feeling a mixture of apprehension and determination. "I'm ready."

They drove back to the house in silence. As soon as they entered, the weight of their world seemed to settle back onto their shoulders. The staff greeted them with quiet professionalism, but there was an undercurrent of tension that hadn't been there before. Alex's phone buzzed constantly with messages and missed calls from his associates, and Isabella knew the business world wouldn't wait for them to adjust.

Later that evening, as they unpacked in their separate rooms, Isabella couldn't help but notice how quickly things had shifted. She knew Alex was dealing with work matters, but there was also a distance that hadn't been there on the island. It was as if the pressures of the outside world were already pushing them apart.

Isabella bit her lip, pacing around her room. She had felt closer to Alex than ever before, but now that they were back, it seemed like those walls he had let down were slowly being rebuilt. She hated how easily she felt herself falling back into old patterns, second-guessing every moment, every glance.

Determined not to lose what they had gained, she walked to Alex's study, where he was sitting behind his desk, flipping through documents. He looked up when she entered, and for a moment, the tension melted from his face.

"You're busy," she said softly, standing in the doorway.

"I am, but…" Alex hesitated, as if debating whether to let her in. After a moment, he pushed the papers aside and stood up, walking toward her. "I can make time for you."

His words surprised her. This was different—the Alex who was trying, the one who wasn't pushing her away.

"I just… I didn't want things to go back to how they were before," Isabella admitted, her voice small. "I don't want to lose what we found on the island."

Alex's gaze softened, and he reached out, gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Neither do I."

There was a pause, heavy with unspoken fears and desires. They were still navigating unfamiliar territory, but there was something stronger between them now—something that wouldn't be so easily shaken.

As the days passed, Alex and Isabella found a delicate balance between their personal lives and the responsibilities that came with being public figures. Alex threw himself back into his work, but there was a noticeable shift in his demeanor when he was around Isabella. He wasn't cold or distant like before, but there were moments when the weight of his responsibilities seemed to overwhelm him.

One evening, as they sat together at the dinner table, Isabella watched him, noticing the strain in his eyes. "You've been working non-stop since we got back," she said gently. "You need a break."

Alex sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "It's not that simple, Izzy. There's a lot going on right now."

"I know, but I'm here," she reminded him. "You don't have to carry everything on your own."

Her words seemed to reach him in a way they hadn't before. He looked at her, really looked at her, and for the first time, she saw the vulnerability in his eyes.

"I don't know how to let go," he admitted quietly.

Isabella smiled softly, reaching across the table to take his hand. "We'll figure it out. Together."

That night, Alex stayed with her, and for the first time in their marriage, it didn't feel like an obligation or an act. It felt like they were finally becoming partners—not just in name, but in every sense of the word.

But as they grew closer, the world around them grew more complicated.

It wasn't long before word of their return from the island spread, and with it, rumors began to circulate about their relationship. The media was obsessed with their marriage, and Sophie, who had been quietly lurking in the background, was not about to let go without a fight.

At an exclusive event a few weeks later, where Alex and Isabella were the center of attention, Sophie made her presence known. She appeared as polished and poised as ever, but there was an edge to her that hadn't been there before—a bitterness she couldn't quite hide.

As she approached Alex and Isabella, her smile was tight. "So, the happy couple returns," she said, her voice laced with sarcasm. "It must be nice, having all the cameras on you."

Isabella bristled but remained composed. She had expected this. Sophie had always been a sore spot in their lives, a reminder of the past that wouldn't go away.

"Sophie," Alex said coldly, stepping slightly in front of Isabella. "We don't need a scene tonight."

Sophie's eyes flicked between them, her smile sharpening. "A scene? Oh, darling, this is far from a scene. But don't worry. I'll make sure everyone knows how happy you two are." With that, she walked away, leaving a trail of whispered rumors in her wake.

Isabella exhaled slowly, trying to calm the anger bubbling up inside her. She didn't want Sophie to get under her skin, but it was hard. She glanced at Alex, who looked just as frustrated.

"She won't give up," Isabella said quietly.

"She's irrelevant," Alex replied, his voice firm. "I only care about you."

And for the first time, Isabella believed him. Sophie's attempts to stir up trouble were becoming less and less effective. What she and Alex had now was real, and no one—not even Sophie—could take that away from them.

They left the event that night hand in hand, a united front against the world. Despite the challenges they faced, they knew that as long as they had each other, they could weather any storm.

For the first time, Isabella felt truly at peace in her marriage. It wasn't perfect, but it was theirs. And that was all that mattered.
