Chapter 15 - Ava

Ethan knocked on the door, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. He had been traveling overseas for months and was eager to reconnect with his friend Isabella. She had invited him to visit, and he couldn't wait to catch up.

The door opened, and Isabella's bright smile greeted him. "Ethan! It's so great to see you!"

They hugged warmly, and Ethan followed her into the cozy living room. That's when he saw Ava, sitting on the couch, typing away on her laptop. She looked up, and their eyes met for a brief moment before she returned to her work.

Isabella made the introductions. "Ava, this is Ethan, my friend from college."

Ava nodded curtly, not looking up from her screen. Ethan felt a slight awkwardness but tried to brush it off.

"Hey, nice to meet you," he said, attempting to sound friendly.

Ava grunted a response, still focused on her laptop. Ethan exchanged a puzzled glance with Isabella, who shrugged and mouthed "she's just busy" behind Ava's back.

Ethan took a seat next to Isabella, trying to make small talk. But Ava's silence was palpable, and he couldn't shake the feeling that she was sizing him up.

As they chatted, Ethan mentioned a recent trip to Europe, and Ava suddenly looked up, her eyes narrowing. "You're one of those privileged tourists who thinks they can just waltz in and experience the 'real' culture?"

Ethan's eyes widened, taken aback by her tone. And that's when the argument started...

Ethan's eyes widened, taken aback by Ava's tone. "What do you mean? I was just trying to share my experience."

Ava's expression turned skeptical. "Experience? You think staying in luxury hotels and taking guided tours is experiencing the real culture?"

Isabella intervened, placing a calming hand on Ava's arm. "Ava, come on. Ethan's just trying to share his story."

But Ava shook her off, her voice rising. "No, Isabella, he's just like all the others. Thinking they can buy their way into understanding a place."

Ethan felt his defenses rise. "That's not fair. I did more than just stay in hotels and take tours. I met people, tried new foods, and learned about the history."

Ava snorted. "I'm sure you did. From the comfort of your air-conditioned bus."

The argument escalated, with neither side willing to listen to the other. Isabella tried to intervene, but it was too late. The tension between Ethan and Ava was palpable, and it seemed like their first meeting was doomed from the start.

As the argument continued, Ethan couldn't help but wonder what had caused Ava's initial wariness. Was it something he had done, or was there more to the story?

As the argument reached a boiling point, Isabella finally managed to intervene, her voice firm but calm. "That's enough, both of you. This isn't solving anything."

Ava and Ethan glared at each other, their chests heaving with frustration. The air was thick with tension.

Isabella took a deep breath. "Ethan, why don't you go grab a drink from the kitchen? I need to talk to Ava for a minute."

Ethan nodded, still fuming, and stalked off to the kitchen. As he poured himself a glass of water, he couldn't shake the feeling that Ava had been waiting for a reason to attack him.

Meanwhile, Isabella turned to Ava, her expression concerned. "What's going on, Ava? You've been acting strange all day."

Ava sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I just don't trust him, Isabella. There's something about him that doesn't add up."

Isabella frowned. "What are you talking about? Ethan's a great guy. I've known him for years."

Ava's eyes narrowed. "That's exactly what I'm worried about. You've been talking about him nonstop for months. I feel like I already know him, but when I met him...it was like he was a completely different person."

Isabella's expression softened. "Ava, I think you're misjudging him. Let's talk to him together and clear the air."

But Ava's mind was made up. "No, Isabella. I need some space. This isn't over."

As Ava stormed out of the room, Ethan returned with his drink, looking concerned. "What just happened?"

Isabella sighed. "I'm not entirely sure. But I think we need to talk to Ava together and figure out what's going on."

Ethan nodded, his eyes locked on the door Ava had exited through. "I think you're right. This isn't over yet."

Isabella and Ethan sat down in the living room, trying to make sense of the argument. "I don't get it," Ethan said, shaking his head. "I've never met anyone like her before."

Isabella laughed. "That's Ava for you. She's always been passionate and strong-willed."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Passionate? She seems more like a firecracker to me."

Isabella chuckled. "Well, maybe a little of both. But there's more to her than meets the eye."

Just then, Ava walked back into the room, her expression still stormy. "I'm sorry, Isabella. I didn't mean to ruin the evening."

Isabella smiled. "You didn't ruin anything, Ava. We were just trying to figure out what happened."

Ava's eyes flicked to Ethan, her gaze still wary. "I just don't trust him, okay? And I don't want to talk about it."

Ethan held up his hands. "Fine, no problem. But can we at least try to be civil?"

Ava nodded curtly, and the tension in the room eased slightly. But Ethan could tell that the argument was far from over.

As they sat down to dinner, Ethan tried to make small talk, but Ava remained distant. He couldn't help but wonder what had caused her initial wariness. Was it something he had done, or was there more to the story?

As the evening drew to a close, Ethan stood up to leave. "Thanks for dinner, Isabella. Sorry again for the argument."

Ava looked up, her eyes still guarded. "Yeah, no problem."

But as Ethan turned to leave, he caught a glimpse of something unexpected - a flicker of sadness in Ava's eyes. And for a moment, he wondered if there was more to her story than he had initially thought.
