Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 19: OAKDALE OASIS

Elijah woke up to an empty room, his gaze scanning the space for any sign of Lucifer. But the cat was nowhere to be found. He called out, his voice growing louder and more urgent as the minutes ticked by.

"Lucifer! Where are you? Answer me!"

But there was only silence.

Elijah's anxiety turned to anger, his curses echoing off the walls. "Damn it, Lucifer! Where did you go? You can't just leave me like this!"

Just as he was about to lose his temper completely, a sleek black cat emerged from the shadows, its eyes gleaming with mischief.

"Ah, calm down, Elijah," Lucifer said, his voice smooth as silk. "I only went out as a scout. I didn't mean to worry you."

Elijah's anger deflated, replaced by relief and a healthy dose of embarrassment. "You sneaky little... I was worried sick about you!"

Lucifer padded closer, his tail twitching with amusement. "I know, I know. But I had to see what was out there. We can't just sit around twiddling our thumbs, waiting for our enemies to come to us."

Elijah sighed, rubbing his temples. "I know. I just... I don't like it when you disappear without warning."

Lucifer's expression softened, his ears folding back in a gesture of contrition. "I'm sorry, Elijah. I didn't mean to scare you. It won't happen again."

Elijah raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "Oh, really? And how can I trust that?"

Lucifer's grin was quick and wicked. "You can't. But you'll just have to learn to live with it, won't you?"

Elijah rolled his eyes, his stomach growling with hunger. "Yeah, yeah. Just next time, give me some warning, okay?"

Lucifer nodded, his whiskers twitching. "I'll try. But for now, let's focus on finding some food. We're running low."

Elijah's gaze fell on their meager supplies, his heart sinking. They were indeed running low, and he had no idea where their next meal would come from.

"Let's go." Lucifer said, as if reading his mind. "While scouting I saw a town not far from here, there will probably be a market there."

Elijah nodded, his eyes locked on the cat. "Stay close, okay?"

Lucifer's ears perked up, his tail twitching. "Always."

Together they walked out of the building building got into the SUV and drove south towards the town.

_____________________________________

Oakdale is a quaint, rural town nestled in the heart of a lush valley, surrounded by rolling hills and dense forests. With a population of just over 2,000 residents, it's a tight-knit community where everyone knows each other's names. The town's architecture is a mix of old and new, with historic buildings like the Oakdale Inn and the Town Hall standing alongside modern homes and businesses.

The town's main street, lined with oak trees, is bustling with activity, featuring a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. The air is sweet with the scent of freshly baked goods from the local bakery, and the sound of laughter and chatter fills the air.

Despite its idyllic appearance, Oakdale has a mysterious undercurrent. Strange occurrences and unexplained events have been whispered about in hushed tones, leaving some residents wondering if the town is indeed as charming as it seems. The nearby woods are said to be haunted by ghostly apparitions, and some claim to have seen shadowy figures lurking in the dead of night.

As the seasons change, Oakdale transforms into a picturesque winter wonderland, with snow-covered streets and twinkling lights adorning the town square. However, the beauty of the town belies a sense of unease, a feeling that something is waiting just beyond the edge of perception, watching and waiting. Despite this, Oakdale remains a place where tradition and community are deeply ingrained, where residents look out for one another, and where the supernatural and mundane coexist in an uneasy harmony.

17 minutes later.

Elijah strolled through the charming streets of Oakdale, a sleek black cat perched on his shoulder. Lucifer's eyes scanned the surroundings, his tail twitching occasionally as he took in the sights and sounds of the town. Elijah was on a mission to find a market, and after a few minutes of walking, they finally stumbled upon a bustling square filled with vendors selling fresh produce, meats, and baked goods.

As they wove through the stalls, Lucifer's ears perked up at the smell of fresh fish. Elijah followed his gaze and purchased a few fillets, along with a loaf of crusty bread. They found a quiet bench to sit and enjoy their meal, the warm sun beating down on them.

As they ate, Lucifer spoke to Elijah mentally, his voice a gentle whisper in his mind. "This town has a good feel to it, Elijah. Low key, no immediate threats. We can lay low here for a while."

Elijah nodded, taking a bite of his fish. "I agree. It's peaceful. But we can't let our guard down."

Lucifer's mental voice was laced with amusement. "I wouldn't dream of it. But for now, let's just enjoy the calm."

As they finished their meal, Elijah reached up to scratch Lucifer behind the ears, earning a contented purr from the cat. They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, watching the townspeople go about their day. It was a rare moment of tranquility in their chaotic lives, and they both savored it.

As they sat on the bench, Elijah couldn't help but notice the curious glances from the townspeople. They seemed friendly, but he knew that Lucifer's presence could still draw attention. He leaned in, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Lucifer, maybe you should keep a low profile. We don't want to draw attention to ourselves."

Lucifer's mental voice was laced with amusement. "Don't worry, Elijah. I'm just a harmless cat to them. Besides, I'm enjoying the sunshine."

Elijah raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "You're not exactly harmless, and you know it."

Lucifer's tail twitched, his whiskers quivering with mischief. "Oh, come on. I'm on my best behavior. For now."

Elijah shook his head, chuckling. "I have a feeling that won't last."

As they sat there, a gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the nearby trees, carrying the whispers of the townspeople. Elijah's ears perked up, his senses on high alert. Lucifer, too, seemed to sense something, his ears perked up, his eyes scanning the surroundings.

"What is it?" Elijah thought, his mind reaching out to Lucifer's.

Lucifer's mental voice was low and serious. "Nothing, I'm just looking for a luxurious motel fitting for a king such as I."

Elijah disappointed. "I knew you were dumb. I just didn't know you were this dumb, well we'll find a place to stay if we're gonna make this place a temporary home."

Lucifer purring while linking his paws, Staring

at Elijah who turned to him asking with a serious voice "Are you sure staying here is the right choice? We'd be dragging innocent people into our battle."

Lucifer speaking directly into Elijah's mind "Staying here makes no difference. Sooner or later they'll all be dragged into this battle. So there's no difference."

Elijah's expression turned grim, his eyes scanning the town with a newfound sense of unease. He knew Lucifer was right, but it didn't make him feel any better. They had to be careful, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of the innocent people of Oakdale.

"Let's find that motel," Elijah said finally, standing up and stretching his arms. "We'll lay low for a while, and then we'll figure out our next move."

Lucifer nodded, his tail twitching with excitement. "I'll find the perfect place. Follow me."

Elijah followed Lucifer as he wove through the streets, his senses on high alert. They finally stopped in front of a luxurious motel on the outskirts of town, its neon sign reading "The Royal Suites".

Lucifer's mental voice was full of excitement. "This is it, Elijah. This is where we'll stay."

Elijah raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "You sure this is a good idea? It's a bit... flashy, isn't it?"

Lucifer's tail twitched, his whiskers quivering with mischief. "That's the point. We'll blend in with the wealthy crowd. No one will suspect a thing."

Elijah sighed, shaking his head. "You're something else, Lucifer."

Lucifer's mental voice was laced with amusement. "That's why you love me, Elijah."

Elijah rolled his eyes, chuckling despite himself. "Let's just get inside before we draw any more attention to ourselves."

As they entered the motel, Elijah couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched. He glanced around, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Lucifer, too, seemed to sense something, his ears perked up, his eyes scanning the surroundings.

But for now, they were safe. And that's all that mattered.
