Chapter 2 - The Girl Who Cry In Her Dream

"It is her dream to become an Adventurer...

...To travel far beyond the horizon, to the lands beyond what is known...

...To traverse the sky and conquer every floating dungeon...

...To someday reach the Moon. The beginning and end of all Dungeons...

...But that dream is nothing but a wishful dream. For she is someone who can't use Magic."

Six basic Magic Attributes.

Flame, Wind, Water, Land, Light, and Dark.

The Magic Attributes test consists of simple trials for children who are around the age of five. The children will use Monster Cores, a marble gem that can be found within the body of Monsters.

Channeling their own Mana through the Slime Monster Core can give the children the ability to control the Attributes. At the same time, if they are already skilled enough, to use the skill contained inside the Monster Core.

Once the children had used the Monster Core, the amount of Mana they had spent would determine their Attributes in Magic.

The less Mana they have spent to acquire the ability to control the Attributes and use the skill would indicate that their Attributes in Magic are the same as the Attributes of the Slime Monster Core.

It was a simple test to determine which Attributes the children have. After all, at the trail where they used a Monster Core with different Attributes on their own, their Mana will be drained at an incredible rate.

The girl, together with her friends and their beloved teacher, went to take the Magic Attributes test to be held at the Adventurers Guild.

She rejoices as her friends take the test and learn about their Magic Attributes. One of her closest friends, whom she considers her sister, has four Magic Attributes. Flame, Wind, Water, and Land. Then, another of her closest friends has a rare Attribute, which is Light.

She was proud of her friends and hoped that her Magic Attributes could at least come close to them.

However, when the girl's turn for the trails has come, something unexpected happens.

One by one, she pours her Mana into the Slime Monster Core. One after another, she feels discomfort and nausea. Like how she feels whenever she would ride a horse-drawn carriage.

But even with that discomfort feeling and the burden she feels every time she uses another Slime Monster Core, the girl endure it all and continues with her trials.

Yet at the last of the six Slime Monster Cores, as she channels her Mana to gain the ability to control the Attributes, the girl finally loses her vision and collapses on the floor.

"Vier!!!"

The last thing that she heard before her consciousness faded into darkness were the cries of her friends and the worried scream of her beloved teacher.

When the girl's consciousness returns as she wakes up lying down on a bed of the Guild's Infirmary, her beloved teacher, along with the other people that she knew, are all waiting and looking after her.

The old man Dwarf who teaches blacksmithing at her school, the Healer who always looks after her whenever she gets injured while playing, the old woman Elf who gives her and her friends some pocket money in exchange for gathering herbs for her, and the mischievous teacher with scary eyes.

The girl doesn't understand what happened. She felt weak and unable to move her body as she tried to get up off the bed.

Her beloved teacher told her to just stay in bed and listen to what she was about to say.

And that's when her beloved teacher told the truth about her inability to use Magic, unlike everybody else.

Her beloved teacher told her that she had a rare condition that was only heard in theory. A condition that has never proven to be true not until today.

Most of the Humans have the Bloodline of their Demi-Human ancestor, which strengthens their Magic Attributes. It's even uncommon to find a Human who has a pure Human Bloodline.

But Humans can only carry a single Demi-Human Bloodline. While the girl has both Dwarf and Elf Bloodlines in her blood. And that condition created the most unexpected outcome. The Dwarf Bloodline and Elf Bloodline deep within her blood cancel out her Magic Attributes. At worst, her rare condition gives her a negative Attributes in Magic which made her spend too much Mana just by using a Rank 0 Monster Core.

The girl doesn't understand all of the things that her beloved teacher told her. Yet she understands one thing. Without any Magic Attributes, then her goal of becoming an Adventurer is nothing but a wishful dream.

The girl cries as she realizes the heartbreaking truth. She cries while she stays in bed at the Guild's Infirmary. She cries as her beloved teacher carries her home. She cries as her mother and father, along with her older brothers, console her until she falls asleep.

Yet even in her sleep, the girl cried in her dream.

The Phantom, the Soul Ember that exists deep within the Soul of her reincarnation, looks at the girl crying, unaware of her presence.

She doesn't need to ask what happened. For she has witnessed through the eyes of the girl the Memories from this early morning.

She doesn't need to wonder for the reason behind those tears. For she understands through the mind of the girl everything that the girl's beloved teacher has said.

She doesn't need to hear the girl's cry to know her pain. For she already feels that same pain through the heart of the girl.

She's nothing but a Phantom of the person who she was once before, yet at this moment she wanted to become something... No... Not something but someone who can console the girl crying in front of her.

And at that moment, for the first time since she became aware of being a Soul Ember, the Phantom who is nothing but a fading flame, speaks of words to become someone who can console the girl.

"Please don't cry, Vier. I know you can still become a great Adventurer."

When the girl raises her head to look at the person who speak to her, what she finds is not a person but a silhouette of an older girl, a burning white flame in the shape of a person, standing in front of her.

"Sob...Sob... Are you a ghost?"

It is the first thing that comes to the girl's mind while she's still crying. Yet even with the bizarre appearance of the person standing in front of her, she doesn't feel scared.

"Of course not. I'm not a ghost."

"Then who are you?"

"I'm..."

The Phantom's voice has been cut off as she's about to introduce who she is. She remembers her name but that name is not for her to own as she is nothing but a Phantom of the person who she was once before.

As the Phantom thinks of how to introduce herself to her reincarnation, the Memories of the girl's life that her reincarnation has lived until this moment came through her.

The girl has a loving mother and father, along with caring three older brothers. Yet the girl is obviously missing something in her family. A role no one has taken yet. So she decided that from now on, she would take that role as her own.

"You can call me as your Onee-chan, Vier."

And at that moment, the Soul Ember, who's nothing but a Phantom, has become something more.

.

"Sob...Sob...You said that I could still become a great Adventurer. But... Sob...Sob... I can't use Magic."

The girl who's still feeling depressed asks for an explanation of what she has heard.

"Well, if you can't use normal Magic unlike everyone else does, I'm going to teach you a special Magic."

"Sob... A special Magic?"

"That's right, Vier... It's an Ancient Magic lost during the downfall of an Ancient advanced civilization. Do you want to know what kind of Magic is it?"

"Mhm!..."

"It's an Ancient Magic called... AMERICAN MAGIC!"

Of course, it was a joke. A joke that the Phantom has learned through the Knowledge of her past life.

"American?... Magic?"

But the girl who doesn't have Knowledge of her past life wouldn't understand the reference to that joke, and the Phantom feels disappointed at that.

"Anyway, I'm going to teach you a way of fighting for you to become a great Adventurer."

What the Phantom intended to do is teach the girl how to fight using guns. But as she recalled the Knowledge about guns that she learned due to her curiosity and interest in her past life, some information about guns became blurry in her mind.

"I'm sure I studied it before, but I can't remember. How do bullets exactly works again?"

"Bullets?"

"Either way, I'm sure everything is gonna work out. So I'm going to show and teach you how to use and fight with guns using the stories from my Memories. But in exchange, I want you to promise one thing, Vier-chan."

"Mhm!... What it is, Onee-chan?"

"Promise me that you won't give up your dream to become a great Adventurer. Become a great Adventurer and show me more of this unfamiliar world of yours."

"Mhm!... I promise, Onee-chan!"
