The bright moonlight illuminated the earth, casting long shadows over the Gulag camp.
Barbed wire fences stretched high, searchlights with almost no blind spots swept the grounds, and Soviet soldiers patrolled back and forth, making the place heavily guarded—escape seemed impossible.
In a room on the top floor of the building, Su Sheng stood by the window, looking out at the open space below.
A month had passed since Element Girl, Emily Song, left. The day after her departure, Su Sheng and the others moved into the Gulag camp. After all, the large hole in the villa wall couldn't be repaired quickly, and the day when the Legends team was expected to arrive was drawing closer. Moving into the Gulag camp, notorious as a hell-level prison, was no different from living in a villa for them.
They had everything they needed: food, books, and whatever else they desired.
The Firestorm Project's laboratory was here, and Valentina spent most of her days conducting various studies. Laili focused on refining her interrogation techniques, using the camp's prisoners as her test subjects, progressing rapidly in her cruel and cold-blooded methods. Su Sheng watched her a few times when he was bored, noticing how she grew stronger in her queen-like demeanor.
They were all occupied, leaving Su Sheng feeling a bit bored.
Though books offered knowledge and beauty, after mastering the basics of physics and electronic engineering, Su Sheng lost his previous enthusiasm for learning.
Bang bang bang!
A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.
"Come in," Su Sheng responded, turning around.
Two soldiers pushed Laura into the room.
"Leave us," Su Sheng waved them off, and the soldiers turned to leave, closing the door behind them.
Since they had moved to the Gulag camp, Laura, who hadn't left with Emily Song and had nowhere else to go, was naturally brought along. Su Sheng had Valentina arrange a single cell for her. If it weren't for Laili mentioning Laura today, Su Sheng might have forgotten about her altogether.
Laura wore a clean prison uniform, and her face was relatively clean, but the confidence and heroism she had shown when they first met were gone, replaced by a numb, dejected expression.
It seemed the once-proud superhero had been thoroughly broken!
Su Sheng smiled, turning to face Laura. She instinctively stepped back, clearly frightened and resistant.
"Don't move!" Su Sheng commanded in a low voice.
Laura froze, pleading, "What... what do you want to do?"
"What do you think?" Su Sheng grabbed Laura's hand, dragging her to the bed. Screams and pleas for mercy soon filled the room.
The sound of high heels echoed in the corridor as Valentina, her face full of excitement, walked quickly towards Su Sheng's room. Before she could get close, she heard the screams from inside and paused, momentarily stunned before slowing down.
Laili?
No, that's not Laili's voice.
Is it another female prisoner? No, that's impossible—after all, he wouldn't touch those disfigured prisoners who were tortured, not when he wouldn't even touch her! Oh, it's her!
Valentina remembered.
She hesitated for a moment before pushing the door open. After all, what she needed to discuss couldn't wait!
"Do you need something?" Su Sheng asked, frowning at Valentina.
Valentina nodded. "As you said, the Legends team is here. I've captured Martin Stein, Heatwave Mick Rory, and Atom Ray Palmer."
"Finally!" Su Sheng smiled. "Take good care of them for now; I'll be over shortly."
"Don't take too long." Valentina glanced at Laura, whose face was streaked with tears. She couldn't understand why this woman, knowing full well what would happen, still refused to leave. Do superheroes in the United States have some sort of mental problem?
"It won't be quick."
"Vandal Savage is here too," Valentina added before turning to leave.
The screams continued.
An hour passed like that.
Su Sheng dressed, glanced at the now numb Laura, and chuckled, "I'll be leaving here soon. You can decide whether you want to follow me or not."
Laura didn't respond, but her dull eyes shifted slightly.
Bang!
The door closed as Su Sheng stepped out, casually ordering someone to lead him to the Legends team.
Interrogation Room.
Su Sheng pushed open the door and entered.
The Atom and Heatwave were suspended, subjected to electric shocks, while Vandal Savage and Valentina tried to convince Martin Stein to hand over the Firestorm matrix.
"It's quite lively in here; I'm not too late, am I?" Su Sheng smiled, waving a casual greeting.
"Su Sheng?"
"Why are you here?"
"Thank goodness, are you here to save us?"
The three members of the Legends team were shocked by Su Sheng's sudden appearance, their despair turning to hope.
Although things had been tense between them before, they had dealt with him, and given Sarah's unusual relationship with him, they assumed she must have asked for his help. Su Sheng was strong; rescuing them should be easy, right? But before the joy of potential salvation could spread, they noticed that neither Vandal Savage nor Valentina seemed surprised, and there were no shouts of alarm from outside.
"You came just in time." Vandal Savage smiled at Su Sheng. "This stubborn old man is all yours."
"Sure," Su Sheng replied with a smile.
What's going on?
The three members of the Legends team were completely bewildered.
What... are they on the same side?
"Su Sheng, you..." Atom began to question angrily, but Su Sheng casually pointed at him.
Zzzzzz!
A stronger current than before surged through Atom, silencing him instantly.
"These two are useless; let them go," Su Sheng said nonchalantly.
"Let them go? Are you sure?" Vandal Savage asked, hesitating. "Without them, it'll be much harder to get the old man to cooperate."
"He will," Su Sheng said with a bright smile, turning to Martin Stein. "Won't you?"
Martin Stein looked at Su Sheng suspiciously, unsure whether to trust him or not. Perhaps he had a plan to save them? No matter what, at least getting the other two out was something. With that in mind, he nodded. "As you said, if you let them go, I'll cooperate."
"See? Simple as that!" Su Sheng smiled and clapped his hands.
Vandal Savage still wasn't sure if he should trust Su Sheng, but when he looked at Valentina and saw her nod slightly, he gave the order in a low voice.
"Let them go!"
Soon, Atom and Heatwave were released and driven out of the Gulag camp.
