Not between mother and daughter, but the person in charge of A.R.G.U.S. or the mastermind behind the Queen's Gambit incident?
Is this even a choice?
As an agent of A.R.G.U.S., Dinah Lance understood the near-impossible task of killing Amanda Waller. Even if by some miracle she succeeded, she knew it would only result in an endless pursuit by the U.S. government and A.R.G.U.S. itself. On the other hand, though she had no idea who was the real culprit behind the Queen's Gambit tragedy, or what kind of power they held, killing them to avenge her daughter wouldn't weigh heavily on her conscience. She could deal with the aftermath using the power of the Sky Eye.
"What if we don't choose?" Dinah Lance asked Su Sheng.
Su Sheng simply spread his hands, not saying a word.
But the implication was clear: if they didn't choose, he might kill them both. Dinah Lance took a deep breath. "In that case, I choose the murderer who killed my daughter. Tell me their identity, and I'll take care of it as soon as possible."
"Once you choose, there's no going back. Are you sure?"
"I'm sure."
"What about you?" Su Sheng turned his gaze to Laurel. Although she didn't want to choose, she could only nod in agreement.
Su Sheng patted Laurel's face gently, satisfied, and said to Dinah Lance, "She will be the one to kill them. You can go now."
Dinah Lance panicked. "She's just an ordinary person. You're sending her to her death! Tell me who it is, and give me three days—no, just one week. I promise I'll kill them."
"I don't care when it happens, but she has to be the one to do it. You have no right to negotiate. After all, I am a villain." Su Sheng grinned widely.
The word "villain" sounded especially ironic to Dinah Lance.
"You can keep tabs on her, but I advise you not to help. I won't kill you or her, but I will kill Quentin Lance." Su Sheng spoke leisurely.
Dinah Lance might be willing to sacrifice her ex-husband for her daughter's sake, but Laurel would never risk her father's life. Even if Dinah helped Laurel, she wouldn't accept it, and she might even worry that her mother would misunderstand and expose everything.
Both Dinah Lance and Laurel looked grim.
"Don't be so down. You can't help Laurel directly, but you can keep coming after me. What if you're lucky enough to kill me? Then you won't have to worry about her safety, and I won't be able to blackmail you anymore. If it doesn't work out, you can always disappear. Maybe I'll lose interest if I can't find you for a while," Su Sheng said earnestly, as if he was genuinely advising them. "Come on, I'm rooting for you!"
"I'll contact you again tomorrow," Su Sheng said with a smile before turning away from Laurel.
As his figure disappeared from the factory, the electric python suspended in the distance dissipated, plunging the factory into darkness. Only the flashlight's beam remained on Laurel. The mother and daughter exchanged glances before Dinah Lance moved silently to try and free her daughter, but the steel bars wouldn't budge.
By the time Dinah Lance finally managed to free Laurel, Su Sheng had already returned to his apartment.
As soon as the door opened, Felicity rushed over from the sofa, neatly dressed, and threw herself into Su Sheng's arms.
"Are you okay? I was worried sick."
"I'm fine," Su Sheng reassured her, patting her back with a chuckle. "Dressed like this in the middle of the night, were you planning to run away with me at any time?"
"Isn't that what we're supposed to do?" Felicity looked up at Su Sheng, her voice tinged with worry.
"No need for that right now," Su Sheng replied, a smirk on his face. "Now, take off those clothes and wait for me in the bedroom. I'll join you after a shower." He kissed her lightly before heading to the bathroom.
With a sigh of relief, Felicity turned and walked back to the bedroom.
It wasn't long before Su Sheng joined her after his shower. Felicity wanted to ask him what had happened, but as soon as Su Sheng came over, he embraced her and started kissing her passionately. Before long, the creaking sounds of the bed filled the room once again. By the time she thought to ask again, it was already morning.
Due to their "exercise" the night before, Felicity woke up late and had just enough time to confirm with Su Sheng that they didn't need to flee before hurrying off to work.
Soon after she left, Su Sheng noticed Laurel heading out to school.
Remembering the route, grabbing his keys and bag, Su Sheng followed suit.
"Stop! Don't run!"
"Damn it, catch me if you can, you stupid cop!"
As soon as Su Sheng stepped out of the apartment, he heard shouts in the distance. He followed the sound and saw a middle-aged police officer chasing a black man who was fleeing with a stolen bag. The nearby pedestrians stepped aside in fear as the man sneered at the officer pursuing him, running straight in Su Sheng's direction.
