He found a clearing with direct sunlight; then, he stood a tree branch vertically on the ground and placed a stone at the top of the shadow cast by the branch.
Ten minutes later, he placed another stone at the top of the moved shadow of the tree branch. Then, drawing a straight line between the two stones, this line represented the east-west direction, and the direction perpendicular to this line was the north-south direction. The end of the line pointing towards the sun was the south, and the opposite direction was the north.
