Chapter 17 - 17. Set up other things

In addition to the rigorous daily training sessions for the young and physically strong members of the pack, Kane knew that the survival of his people depended on more than just brute strength. He began organizing the rest of the werewolf community, assigning them crucial tasks that would fortify their new home and prepare them for the inevitable human attack.

First, Kane instructed a group to start digging trenches around the perimeter of their settlement. These trenches would serve as both defensive positions and traps, designed to slow down any advancing enemy. The werewolves, though initially unfamiliar with this type of warfare, quickly adapted, digging deep and strategically placed trenches that could be used in various ways during an attack.

Next, Kane organized teams to craft weapons and set up traps. They fashioned spears from sturdy tree branches, sharpening the tips to deadly points. These spears would be their first line of defense, a way to keep the enemy at bay before they got too close. Kane also had them set up numerous traps around the perimeter—hidden pits, tripwires, and spikes carefully concealed by the underbrush.

The pack worked tirelessly, the atmosphere charged with a sense of urgency. They knew they were on borrowed time, and every moment was precious. As they labored, Kane noticed the determination etched on their faces; they were no longer just werewolves—they were warriors.

One evening, as the pack gathered around the fire after a long day of fortifying their camp, Kane brought up an idea that had been lingering in his mind since the ill-fated negotiation with the humans. He recalled how the humans had used hidden lookouts—men stationed at strategic points to observe and report back on enemy movements. It was a tactic that had caught him off guard, and one he now realized they needed to adopt.

"I've been thinking about something," Kane said, drawing the attention of the group. "When I went to negotiate with the humans, I noticed they had hidden sentries—people stationed in secret to watch over their surroundings. It's a clever tactic, one that allowed them to keep an eye on us without us knowing. We need to implement something similar here."

There was a murmur of agreement among the pack, and Kane continued, "We're going to set up our own lookouts, hidden throughout the forest and near the outskirts of the human territory. These sentries will keep watch, report back on any human movements, and warn us of any approaching threats. It's not enough to just defend ourselves—we need to be aware of what's happening beyond our borders."

The pack quickly saw the wisdom in Kane's words, and plans were made to establish these hidden outposts. Kane selected the most skilled and stealthy members of the pack for this task, instructing them on how to remain undetected while gathering valuable intelligence.

In addition to these sentries, Kane decided it was time to form an elite group within the pack—werewolves who would serve as his special forces, capable of handling the most dangerous and critical missions. He handpicked fifteen to twenty of the strongest and most capable warriors, training them personally in advanced combat techniques and tactics.

"You will be my eyes and ears," Kane told them during their first briefing. "Some of you will infiltrate human cities, gathering information on their plans and movements. The rest of you will be my personal guard, ensuring my safety and the safety of our pack at all times. You'll be the first to fight and the last to retreat."

The elite squad, now known as the Special Operations Unit, took their roles seriously. A few were assigned to blend into human society, posing as ordinary citizens while covertly gathering intelligence. The rest shadowed Kane, their presence a constant reminder that he was never alone in his fight to protect their kind.

As the days passed, the werewolves became a well-oiled machine. The trenches were dug, the traps were set, and the lookouts were established. The pack was more united than ever, each member contributing to the collective effort of ensuring their survival.

One night, as Kane was reviewing reports from the scouts who had infiltrated the human cities, Elara approached him. She had been watching him closely, noting how he had transformed from a leader into a commander—a role that weighed heavily on him.

"Kane," she said softly, sitting down beside him, "you've done so much for the pack. But don't forget to take care of yourself too. The weight of leadership is heavy, and it's okay to let others share the burden."

Kane looked up from the reports, his expression softening at her concern. "I appreciate that, Elara," he replied. "But right now, there's no room for rest. The humans are out there, plotting our demise, and I won't let them catch us off guard again."

Elara placed a hand on his shoulder, offering a small, supportive smile. "You're not alone in this, Kane. We're all in this together, and we'll face whatever comes, side by side."

Kane nodded, feeling a surge of gratitude for Elara's unwavering support. She was right—he wasn't alone, and together, they would lead the pack through the storm that was sure to come.

As the fire crackled and the night deepened, the pack continued their preparations, knowing that their survival depended on the strength of their unity, the sharpness of their claws, and the cunning of their minds. The werewolves were ready, and this time, they would not be taken by surprise.
