The day had been exhausting enough already. I was still sore from dealing with those snipers earlier, and now here I was, trailing Takabana Maya as she made her way home after school. The sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving the sky painted in hues of dark blue.
The streetlights flickered to life, casting their dim glow over the streets. I stayed in the shadows, a silent presence a few paces behind her, keeping my distance while making sure I wasn't noticed.
Maya was none the wiser, her attention glued to her phone as she walked, her fingers tapping away at the screen.
Probably talking to one of her friends, or maybe sharing her thoughts on her latest extravagant purchase. Whatever it was, it wasn't my business. My business was keeping her safe, whether I liked it or not.
