Chapter 13 - Let the hunt begin (5), the second target

The next day, the sun rose shyly in the sky, carrying out its duty regardless of the feelings of the people below.

Jidenna's eyes fluttered open. He got up from the bed, stretching lazily, feeling satisfied by the snaps in his joints. This had been the best sleep he had in days.

"I slept like a baby," he muttered, rubbing his eyes.

"Yesterday!" His eyes snapped open, the sleepiness gone. He stretched out his arm and snatched his phone from the bedside table with a grin.

The phone in his grasp shook because of his excitement.

He took a deep breath to calm himself and turned on the radio to listen to the news.

Not hearing what he wanted, his mind wandered off.

"This style is much better than rushing in headfirst like a bull because of exploding strength."

"At least, I didn't leave any evidence."

He had made sure to dispose of everything he used yesterday—apart from his own mobile phone.

He had taken a huge detour, throwing some items into a dumpster and dropping the rest in front of rundown buildings—perhaps they'd find a use for it.

"It would give them a scare at first."

But the phone was smashed to pieces with everything in it.

"…The Deputy Police Officer announced this morning that they had discovered and stormed into the meeting point of wanted drug lords, arresting them."

"He said that they have been apprehended and will be taken to court for trial."

"This is the news for 7:00. For more stories and inquiries, visit…"

"Did I miss the details?" He wondered but then gave up. "You know what, I'll just search the internet."

But before he could type anything, the top trending news caught his attention.

He smirked. "It seems everyone is on it."

First, he looked at the image of the arrested individuals the police had posted. His mind only calmed down when he saw the very noticeable bald-headed man among them.

That was his concern—that the bald man was caught.

The police gave them an e-parade, showing their images to everyone to look at and insult.

He read through the article. "So that means the police had already been hot on their trails but couldn't find them."

"No wonder they believed me so quickly, but anyway, it doesn't matter. What matters is that I've won."

The bald man, the boss, was already doomed from the moment he met with the wanted criminal.

According to the police, they were caught with both illegal arms and drugs.

But in fact, any arms not seen in the hands of the forces—police or vigilante—were illegal.

He threw away all distracting thoughts and focused on his plan for his next target—the muscular man.

And just like before, he planned to stay away, striking at him indirectly.

He imagined that the muscular man could kill him with just a little squeeze of those muscles that were twice the size of his head.

He shook his head, removing the horrific but comical image from his mind.

Originally, he planned to use poison. Poison is the quickest and easiest way to dispose of him, but he had no connection to buy it.

Making his own would require buying a lot of things, which would raise questions.

The last thing he needed this period was to stand out.

But, he paused, "luckily, I have another plan."

Just like always, he waited for the sun to go to sleep before he moved. Earlier in the afternoon, he trailed the muscular man from a distance.

He watched the duo's panic, the tense atmosphere that surrounded them without raising an eyebrow.

It might have been because of what happened, but they did not head out to enjoy the nightlife of Lagos like before. They quietly walked back to their building, their figures almost huddling together, displaying their vigilance.

Would he be a villain if he said he loved when they squirmed and panicked, especially when it was his handiwork?

Once it was night, he moved with another disguise.

His shoes were two sizes bigger, and he wore three thick shirts with a fake beard.

Once again, he was back. Some days ago, this place gave him nightmares, but now he was back.

He hoisted himself up using his hands. He crawled his way up through the protrusions on the wall, which were meant to be decorations, but Jidenna took advantage of them. Soon enough, he had reached the veranda on the first floor.

He tried the door knob, but it was locked. However, up ahead was an open window. He moved from the veranda, climbing up again until he got to the window.

Peering inside, the muscular man lay on the bed snoring. The walls seemed to vibrate from the sound.

"Tch," he clicked his tongue, entering the room.

He headed into the kitchen.

In this building, every room had a toilet, bathroom, and kitchen.

He walked straight to the gas cylinder and opened it.

His nose twitched as he smelled the gas leaking from the cylinder.

He looked at the cylinder, which reached his shoulder, and gave a wide grin. "Perfect."

When he came out, the muscular man suddenly jerked up from bed.

Jidenna's body ducked down, and he crept back to the kitchen.

His heart sped up in fright as he held his breath, praying inwardly, "go back to bed."

But his prayer went unanswered.

The muscular man stumbled out of the bed, fumbling with his pants and walking towards Jidenna.

With each step he took, Jidenna's heartbeat spiked.

Jidenna squatted down more, making sure he was completely hidden from view. He plastered his body to the wall of the kitchen, his breath coming out slowly.

But when he thought things couldn't get any worse,

He heard a rough voice say, "Huh. I don't remember leaving the door open…"
