The shadow in the window became more clear, and Avery's heart sprang into her throat. She swung around, energy rushing, only to see Jess standing at the doorway.
"Avery? Are you okay?" Jess inquired, worry etched on her features. "You ran out of there so fast..."
Avery faked a grin, trying to quiet her pounding pulse. "I'm OK. Just... worried about the response tonight."
Jess beamed. "You'll do fine! Want to get ready together?"
For a minute, Avery was tempted. The possibility of a typical evening with a buddy was painfully alluring. But the weight of her double life weighed down on her.
