Chapter 7 - The Devil's Advocate

Vance's office was filled with tense silence until the unexpected buzz of a phone broke it. Everyone looked at Marcus Chen as he gently reached into his pocket, a slight smile on his lips. "Excuse me," he said, sounding uncomfortably pleasant. "I have to take this."

Marcus moved aside to answer the call, and Avery's mind raced. Everything had become chaotic with her father's arrival, but it also offered an opportunity. She pulled Lucas in, and they quickly made a plan together. Avery knocked Detective Harper's gun to the ground in one smooth move. Lucas tackled Vance before he could reach for a weapon. Seeing Avery's swift actions startled Elena, who found herself pressed against the wall.

"What now?" Lucas grumbled as he struggled to control Vance.

Before Avery could answer, the room filled with slow clapping. Marcus Chen stood there, his face light-hearted as the phone call ended. "Impressive," he said, staring directly at Avery. "Little Chen, you've learned well. But did you really think it would be that easy?"

The office door opened as if on cue. A group of black-clad security personnel entered, armed and ready. In seconds, Avery and Lucas were surrounded and outgunned. Marcus grinned more broadly. "Try again now. We're going to have a reasonable conversation about the future of our activities. And this time, there will be no delays."

Thoughts from the night before swirled in Avery's mind as she returned to Blackthorn University hours later, just as dawn broke. The "civilized conversation" had been anything but; it was filled with hidden threats, complex negotiations, and surprising revelations. Lucas and she had been allowed to leave, but it was clear they were being watched everywhere. Elena and Vance had disappeared with Marcus; their locations were unknown. As for Harper, the detective had turned out to be a pawn in a much larger game.

Exhaustion weighed heavily on Avery's shoulders as a sleek black sedan pulled up beside her while she walked across the quiet campus. When the tinted window rolled down, Lucas's estranged brother, Damien Sterling, appeared— a face she had only seen in photos. Damien gave a calm directive, "Get in. We need to talk."

Despite her curiosity, Avery felt a strong urge to run. She noticed the luxurious interior and a faint bulge in Damien's jacket, suggesting a hidden weapon, as she climbed into the car.

"I hear you've had quite the night," Damien said as the car started moving. His emerald eyes, so similar to Lucas's, were fixed on her. Avery met his gaze firmly. "I also know you've been noticeably absent while your brother tries to save the world. Care to explain?"

A half-smile crossed Damien's lips. "Straightforward: I like that. I've been... compiling materials. The game is changing, Ms. Chen, and I want to back the winning team."

The car drove through the bustling city until it stopped at a modest office building. Avery followed Damien inside to a grand apartment that radiated power and wealth. "Welcome to my modest abode," Damien said as he walked through the opulent space. "Clearly temporary. I never stay in one place for too long."

Avery noticed the little details and cut to the chase. "Cut the small talk, Sterling. Why are you here?"

Damien's demeanor grew serious. "Because Avery Chen, you are the key to everything. Even if my brother hasn't seen it yet, I do. You are the link between academics, crime, and family legacy. I also want to propose a partnership."

The hints in his words left Avery's head spinning with choices and potential outcomes. "And what exactly would this partnership involve?"

Moving to a bar cart, Damien poured two glasses of amber liquor and handed one to Avery. "I want to change the crime scene of this city and the coast. But I need someone with your contacts and skills to help me do it."

Avery sipped the drink as she considered his offer. "And Lucas? Your brother?"

A brief look of regret crossed Damien's face. "Lucas has good intentions. He thinks he can change the system from within. You and I, though, know better. Sometimes you have to tear everything down to build something new."

As Avery weighed Damien's words, the tension in the room grew. She was tempted by the chance to influence events rather than just react to them. But she also thought of Lucas's unwavering support and their cautious trust.

Before she could respond, her phone buzzed. An unknown number flashed the message: "Don't trust him. Come to the old library L."

Avery's pulse quickened. Lucas: how was he supposed to find her?

Damien noticed her change in mood. "Problem?"

Avery shrugged. "Just a reminder about the study group. Remember, this is a lot to process. Take your time."

Damien nodded slowly. "Definitely. Take all the time you need. Just remember, Avery, opportunities like these are rare. I also find it unusual for people to wait."

Her emotions and thoughts clashed as Avery left the penthouse. The university buzzed with students heading to their morning classes, blissfully unaware of the power struggles and hidden alliances at play.

Avery went to the old Gothic building near the edge of the campus, closed for repairs. On high alert, she slipped inside and smelled the musty scent of old books. "Lucas?" she called softly as she moved into the dark interior.

A figure emerged from behind a shelf, but it wasn't Lucas. Elena Russo stood there, looking delicate yet determined. "I'm sorry for the dishonesty, but I needed to talk with you alone," Elena said. "Things have changed everywhere. Damien Sterling's return shifts the power balance, and Marcus Chen is on the move. A war that could devastate this city is close."

Avery's hand moved toward the weapon hidden behind her back. "And why should I believe you? You've been on the other side from the start."

Elena's eyes flashed with a mix of regret and resolve. "Because I know what's coming in full. Marcus, Vance, and the Sterlings are only parts of a bigger picture. Avery, you're the wildcard that could change everything."

Before Avery could respond, footsteps echoed through the library. The two women braced for conflict. Lucas emerged from the shadows, looking puzzled. "Elena, I got your message. Still not sure why I came."

Elena glanced frantically between them. "Because deep down, you both know that to survive what's coming, we need each other."

The three stood in a tense triangle, years of secrets and conflicting loyalties thick in the air. Avery's mind raced to piece together the complex web of relationships and betrayals. Suddenly, a slow clap echoed through the large room. Damien Sterling appeared with a smirk.

"Well, isn't this cozy?" he said, drawing attention. "The professor, the prodigy, the prodigal son. We're all gathered here among the dusty remains of the past. The old ways are disappearing, and I'm here to usher in the new order."

Lucas moved protectively toward Avery, speaking quietly but fiercely. "Damien, where are you really? Conspiring with the enemy?"

Damien's green eyes flashed with danger. "Little brother, I could ask you the same thing. I really expected more from you."

"Enough!" Avery's voice cut through the tension. Lucas, torn between loyalty and doubt, Elena, with her urgent plea for alliance, and Damien, with his tempting path to power, all looked at her. Avery knew that her next choice would shape everything.

As the four faced off in the dark library, the stakes were high for Blackthorn University, the criminal underground, and maybe the entire city. Avery took a deep breath, knowing her words could tip the balance of power and allegiance. But before she could speak, the building shook with a deafening explosion. Dust and debris filled the air as the world descended into chaos. In the turmoil and smoke, alliances would shift, and Avery Chen, the daughter of the hesitant kingmaker, would have to decide where her true loyalty lay. With the game forever changed, there was no turning back.
