Chereads / Kenshin Tanaka: The Summoned Hero of Brighthold / Chapter 9 - The King's Challenge

Chapter 9 - The King's Challenge

Elara stood outside her father's chambers, adjusting the straps of her armor. The early morning sun bathed the courtyard in a golden hue, casting long shadows across the stone walls of Commander Varrick's fortress. Her thoughts were momentarily distracted by the sound of approaching footsteps.

"Is Kenshin the right man for this, Elara?" Commander Varrick asked, his voice low and gruff.

Elara looked up at her father, a seasoned warrior with more scars than most men had years of life. His eyes, however, held more concern than she had ever seen before. "He is," she replied with a firm nod. "Kenshin is different. He sees things none of us do. He's clever, and he cares about this kingdom in a way that's... surprising."

Varrick studied his daughter's face, searching for any sign of doubt. Finding none, he grunted in approval and turned to lead the way into the fortress. "Let's see if he can convince the dukes as easily as he's convinced you."

Inside, the fortress was a hive of activity. Courtiers and guards moved briskly, their faces set in the stern expressions of those who knew that today's meeting could determine the fate of Brighthold. Elara and her father made their way to the grand chamber where the king and the three dukes of the realm awaited them.

As they approached the heavy wooden doors of the chamber, Elara caught sight of Kenshin standing alone in the hallway, his expression calm but focused. He noticed them and offered a brief smile.

"Ready for the challenge?" Elara asked, trying to keep her tone light despite the tension in the air.

Kenshin nodded, his eyes glinting with determination. "As ready as I'll ever be. Did the Prime Minister send the documents?"

"Yes, everything is in place," she confirmed, stepping closer. "Remember, they're not just the dukes—they're powerful men with strong opinions. You'll need to be careful."

Kenshin chuckled softly, adjusting the collar of his tunic. "Careful, yes, but I won't hold back. If this kingdom has any hope of survival, we need to act now."

With that, the doors were pushed open, revealing the grand chamber. The king sat at the head of a long, ornate table, his presence commanding even as his face showed signs of weariness. The three dukes were seated around the table, each representing one of the major regions of the kingdom.

The first duke, Duke Thorne, was a tall, imposing figure with a stern countenance. His lands were the wealthiest, and he had a reputation for being shrewd and calculating. The second, Duke Ravenscar, was smaller in stature but known for his sharp mind and political acumen. The third, Duke Ironwood, was a grizzled veteran of countless battles, his loyalty to the king unquestioned.

Kenshin and Elara took their seats as Varrick positioned himself behind his daughter, crossing his arms and observing the room with a watchful eye. A courtier hurried into the chamber, carrying a stack of documents that he placed before the dukes and the king.

Duke Thorne was the first to speak after briefly scanning the papers. He slammed his hand down on the table, his voice filled with incredulity. "This is absurd! Sell off the royal treasury? Have you lost your mind?"

Kenshin didn't flinch at the outburst. Instead, he calmly raised his voice to address the room. "Please, just look through the papers. I will explain everything once you've had a chance to review them."

There was a tense silence as the dukes and the king began to flip through the documents. The minutes dragged on, the only sounds being the rustle of parchment and the occasional murmur of disbelief. Finally, when all had finished, Kenshin stood to address them.

"As you can see," Kenshin began, his voice steady, "the immediate financial crisis can be alleviated by selling off certain items from the royal treasury. Now, before you object, let me explain. The treasury is divided into three categories: the first contains arcane and magical items that must remain under strict control, the second consists of historical artifacts tied to the kingdom's legacy, and the third category holds non-essential luxuries—jewels, and treasures that serve no immediate purpose."

Commander Varrick interjected, his deep voice carrying a note of skepticism. "You're suggesting we sell off the kingdom's wealth? The very symbols of our power?"

Kenshin turned to Varrick, his expression unyielding. "I'm suggesting that we make sacrifices to ensure our survival. These items in the third category are non-essential. They've been gathering dust for years. We can recoup from looking less extravagant, but we cannot recover from a financial collapse."

The king, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke, his voice laced with irritation. "It will make us look weak."

Kenshin met the king's gaze head-on, his expression hardening. "With all due respect, Your Majesty, we're already weak. The kingdom is bankrupt, and without drastic action, we'll have nothing left to protect."

The air in the room grew thick with tension as the king's eyes narrowed. A palpable aura of power began to emanate from the monarch, stronger than anything Kenshin had felt before. The walls seemed to groan under the pressure, and beads of sweat formed on the foreheads of those present. Elara dropped to one knee, using her sword for support, her face pale from the strain.

But Kenshin, to everyone's surprise, remained standing. His legs trembled slightly, but his resolve did not falter. Commander Varrick, the only other person unaffected, watched Kenshin with newfound respect.

Kenshin's voice, though strained, cut through the oppressive aura. "Commander Varrick, how many months' worth of funds remain in the treasury to sustain the kingdom?"

Varrick answered without hesitation, "Five months, at most."

Kenshin nodded and turned back to the king. "Did you hear that, my liege? What do you want to do?"

The king's aura slowly receded, and the room seemed to exhale in relief. The cracks that had started forming in the walls stopped spreading, and those who had been struggling to stand finally regained their composure. Elara stood up, though her legs still trembled.

Kenshin pressed on, his tone more measured now. "If you believe you can solve this without my help, I'm willing to leave. But if you want to save this kingdom, we must act together."

One of the dukes, Duke Ravenscar, muttered under his breath, "You're not one of us."

Kenshin's eyes flashed with anger, and a burst of aura exploded from him, surprising everyone in the room. He didn't fully understand what was happening, but he continued speaking, his voice filled with raw emotion. "I didn't choose to come here. I was torn from my home, with no way back. In this world, I have nothing but this kingdom. If Brighthold falls, I fall with it. So, yes, I'm one of you because I have more to lose than any of you."

The room fell silent, the gravity of Kenshin's words hanging heavy in the air. The dukes exchanged uneasy glances, and even the king seemed to soften slightly. Kenshin took a deep breath, regaining his composure.

"Now, let's focus on the next issue. As you'll see in the documents, I've audited the kingdom's finances and tenders. There are numerous discrepancies, both small and large. If we can recover the funds lost through these channels, we'll have enough to cover a year's budget and more."

The room erupted into murmurs as the dukes rifled through the papers, their expressions growing increasingly grim as they absorbed the extent of the corruption. Kenshin leaned back in his chair, a small, satisfied smile playing on his lips.

The king finally spoke, his voice carrying a note of resignation. "Very well. We will proceed with your plan."

The dukes, now viewing Kenshin with newfound respect, nodded in agreement. Kenshin's aura faded as he relaxed, feeling the weight of the moment settle in his chest. The kingdom's fate was far from secure, but this was a step in the right direction.

As the meeting adjourned, Kenshin lingered for a moment, watching as the dukes and the king filed out of the room. Elara approached him, her eyes reflecting a mixture of pride and concern.

"You did well," she said softly.

Kenshin sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's only the beginning. There's so much more to do."

Elara nodded, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "We'll get through this, Kenshin. Together."

As they left the chamber, Kenshin couldn't help but feel the weight of the kingdom's future resting on his shoulders. But for the first time since arriving in this strange world, he felt a sense of purpose—a reason to fight. And fight he would, no matter the cost.
