Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Overseer'S attention

The Overseer's Visit

A few weeks after the incident with Butch, Victor's reputation has significantly improved among his peers. His growing technical prowess and newfound social connections don't go unnoticed by the vault's authority figures, particularly the Overseer, Alphonse Almodovar.

One afternoon, while Victor is busy in the maintenance area, the Overseer pays a visit. His presence is imposing, as always, but today there's a hint of curiosity in his eyes.

Overseer Almodovar: "Victor."

Victor looks up from his workbench, where he's been repairing a small circuit board. He quickly stands up, respectful of the Overseer's authority.

Victor: "Yes, sir?"

The Overseer walks around the room, observing the various pieces of equipment and tools neatly organized by Victor.

Overseer Almodovar: "I've been hearing a lot about you lately. It seems you've been making quite an impression."

Victor remains modest, knowing that the Overseer's words are as much a test as they are a compliment.

Victor: "I'm just trying to help out where I can, sir. There's so much to learn, and I want to make sure I'm prepared for whatever comes our way."

The Overseer raises an eyebrow, intrigued by Victor's answer. He's aware of the boy's exceptional intelligence, but it's the maturity in his response that stands out.

Overseer Almodovar: "You're wise beyond your years, Victor. The vault needs more people like you—those who think ahead and take initiative. Your father must be very proud."

Victor feels a surge of pride at the mention of his father. He knows how much James has done for the vault, and he's determined to follow in his footsteps.

Victor: "Thank you, sir. I'm just trying to do my part."

The Overseer nods, satisfied with Victor's humility and dedication. He pauses for a moment, as if considering something important.

Overseer Almodovar: "Keep up the good work, Victor. The vault's future depends on young minds like yours."

With that, the Overseer turns and exits the room, leaving Victor to ponder his words. The visit, though brief, leaves a lasting impact on Victor. He realizes that his actions are being noticed at the highest levels, and this only strengthens his resolve to continue learning and growing.

Planning for the Future

As time passes, Victor continues to balance his studies, technical projects, and social interactions. He spends his days learning everything he can about the vault's systems, often losing himself in the intricacies of old manuals and schematics.

One evening, after finishing his tasks for the day, Victor sits down with his father for dinner. The two of them share a close bond, and James has always encouraged Victor's interests.

James: "You've been working hard, Victor. I can see how much you've grown, not just in your knowledge, but in your relationships with the other residents."

Victor smiles, appreciating his father's support.

Victor: "I want to be ready, Dad. Ready for anything. The more I learn, the more I realize how much more there is to know."

James nods, understanding his son's drive. He knows that Victor is not just learning for the sake of it—he's preparing for something bigger, something that even James can't fully comprehend.

James: "You're doing great, son. Just remember, it's important to also take time for yourself. Don't let your ambitions consume you."

Victor takes his father's advice to heart. He's aware of the dangers of becoming too focused on his goals, and he knows that balance is key. But in the back of his mind, he's already planning his next steps—ways to further enhance his skills and contribute to the vault's safety and well-being.

Gaining the Respect of His Peers (Continued)

Butch: "Hey, Victor! You think you're so smart, huh? Always hanging around the adults and fixing things like you're one of them."

Victor, though surprised by Butch's sudden confrontation, remains calm. He had noticed how Butch had always been a bit of a bully, trying to assert dominance over the other kids. But instead of reacting with anger, Victor decides to approach the situation differently.

Victor: "I just like to help where I can, Butch. It doesn't mean I'm better than anyone else."

Butch narrows his eyes, trying to gauge whether Victor is being sincere. The other children watch closely, some of them silently rooting for Victor.

Butch: "Well... if you're so good at fixing things, why don't you help us out? The radio in our room stopped working, and I bet you can't get it running again."

Victor sees this as an opportunity to not only prove his skills but also to build a bridge between himself and Butch, who had always been something of an adversary.

Victor: "Sure, I can take a look at it. But how about this—we work on it together? That way, you'll know how to fix it yourself next time."

Butch, caught off guard by Victor's offer, hesitates. He wasn't expecting Victor to be so willing to help, let alone suggest working together. After a moment, he nods, albeit reluctantly.

Butch: "Fine. But if you mess it up, it's on you."

Victor smiles, sensing a shift in Butch's attitude. They head to Butch's room, where the broken radio sits in the corner, wires exposed and clearly tampered with. Victor immediately gets to work, explaining each step to Butch as he goes. To his surprise, Butch listens attentively, and after some time, the radio crackles to life, playing a familiar tune.

Butch: "You actually did it... Thanks, Victor."

The gratitude in Butch's voice is subtle but genuine. The tension between them eases, and Victor realizes that this could be the start of a new friendship—or at the very least, a truce.

From that day forward, Victor finds that the other children in the vault, even those who were once skeptical of him, begin to approach him more openly. They ask for his help with various projects, and soon, Victor becomes not just a respected figure among the adults, but among his peers as well.
