Chapter 33 - Chapter 31: Combat Ninja

As they approached the makeshift lab, nestled in a secluded corner, Ryu's improvised laboratory stood as a testament to his ingenuity and determination. At the centre of this unconventional setup sat a single glass jar, its contents holding the potential to revolutionise medicine as they knew it.

Dr. Yuki's eyes widened as she took in the scene before her. Her gaze swept over the makeshift equipment, a collection of repurposed items and clever contraptions that spoke volumes about Ryu's resourcefulness.

Her fingers traced the outlines of a particularly ingenious device, a microscope cobbled together from spare parts that looked as if it might fall apart at any moment.

"This is... unconventional, to say the least," she remarked, her voice a mixture of curiosity and uncertainty. The corner of her mouth twitched, caught between a smile of admiration and a frown of concern.

Ryu offered a small, wry smile in return. "Yes, Mother Yuki," he conceded, his tone carrying a hint of pride beneath the humility. "It's not exactly state-of-the-art, but we have to make do with what we have. In times of necessity, innovation thrives in the most unlikely places."

He gestured towards the glass jar that had captured Dr. Yuki's attention earlier. Inside, a crusty piece of mouldy bread sat like a treasure, its unassuming appearance belying its potential significance.

"This," Ryu explained, his voice barely above a whisper, as if sharing a precious secret, "is where our miracle begins."

Dr. Yuki leaned in closer; her scientific curiosity piqued. "Explain it to me," she encouraged, her earlier scepticism giving way to genuine interest.

"To test my hypothesis," he began, his words gaining momentum as he spoke, "I've been isolating bacteria samples from various sources, including the mould you see here. We then placed samples from my throat and mucus alongside the mould in these petri dishes." He paused, allowing the significance of his words to sink in. "By now, some reaction should be evident. Why don't you take a look, Dr. Yuki?"

Ryu's hands moved with practiced precision as he adjusted the microscope he'd cobbled together from spare parts. As he focused the lens, Dr. Yuki leaned in, her eyes widening with surprise.

As Dr. Yuki peered through the microscope, her expression transformed from cautious curiosity to one of unbridled astonishment. "This... this is incredible!" she exclaimed, her voice echoing with awe.

Observing the microscopic battle unfolding before her eyes, Dr. Yuki's initial scepticism melted away, replaced by sheer amazement. The tiny world beneath the lens told a story of conflict and triumph, a narrative written in microorganisms.

"Wow," she exhaled, amazed. "Seems like there is a separate area around the mould development, free of microorganisms. It is like an unseen fight happened, and Mould was the surprising winner."

Dr. Yuki couldn't help but feel awestruck as she gazed through the microscope at the astonishing results before her. Her initial curiosity had transformed into full-blown astonishment as she observed the clear zone surrounding the mould growth, indicating the complete eradication of the bacteria.

"Could this be used as a synthetic antibiotic? This could revolutionise medicine," she murmured, her gaze fixed on the evidence before her.

Ryu nodded solemnly, his young face bearing an expression far beyond his years. "I believe so, Mother Yuki."

An overwhelming wave of excitement washed over Dr. Yuki as she pondered the transformative potential of this discovery. The notion that such a simple experiment could alter the very foundations of medical treatment left her exhilarated and eager to delve deeper into its implications.

"If this truly works as intended, if this discovery holds the key to revolutionising medicine," she mused, her voice tinged with awe and anticipation.

Turning towards Ryu, the young genius behind this groundbreaking revelation, Dr. Yuki couldn't contain her enthusiasm. With an earnest expression, she declared, "Ryu, what you've achieved here is nothing short of groundbreaking. The implications of this discovery could reshape the landscape of healthcare as we know it and revolutionise how we treat a multitude of diseases."

Ryu smiled, a mixture of pride and humility evident in his expression. "Yes, but this is just a preliminary observation. Further experiments are necessary to validate and solidify our findings."

"You're right, of course," Dr. Yuki agreed, her scientific mind already racing with possibilities. "We'll need to conduct rigorous trials, test for side effects, determine optimal dosages... But Ryu, this is an excellent starting point. You've opened a door that could save countless lives."

As Dr. Yuki affirmed the undeniable impact of the results, her conviction grew stronger. "The results are undeniable, Ryu. This is groundbreaking. Your findings must be shared with the world," she insisted, recognising the pivotal moment at hand. "The urgency of this discovery demands immediate publication to initiate the next phase of development. I will draft research papers myself and publish them in your name immediately."

Ryu shook his head, a determined glint in his eyes. A flicker of worry crossed his face, his sense of urgency palpable. His concern for his deteriorating health overshadowed his desire for personal recognition.

"Mother Yuki, time is of the essence. We must expedite the production process to ensure timely access to this life-saving medication," he urged, the fragility of his voice underscoring the urgency of the situation.

Ryu then said, "My condition worsens every day. We need to expedite the process and get this medicine into production as soon as possible," he trailed off, coughing weakly.

Dr. Yuki's smile faltered, her earlier excitement giving way to concern. She reached out a hand, worry etched on her face. "You're right, Ryu. We need to expedite the process. But you need to publish these findings first."

"No," Ryu interrupted gently, his voice raspy. "Not like this. I... I'm still a child. My condition," he coughed again, clutching his chest. "Let the discovery come from you. It will lend it credibility and speed up human trials."

Dr. Yuki's brow furrowed, her voice laced with a mixture of concern and admiration. "But Ryu, I can vouch for the experiments; there will be no doubt, no delays! People will trust your discovery. Human trials can begin sooner."

Isao, who had been silently observing the exchange, stepped forward, his eyes shining with enthusiasm. He said, "Dr. Yuki is right, Ryu-san! She can Vouch for you. Her name on this will open doors."

Ryu smiled faintly, his eyes reflecting a wisdom beyond his years. "Recognition doesn't matter, Mother Yuki. What matters is saving lives. If it comes with my name, there will be questions and doubts. It will take time to overcome them."

Dr. Yuki's brows furrowed deeper. She said, "But surely you deserve the credit, Ryu. This is your groundbreaking discovery. You deserve the recognition."

Despite Dr. Yuki's assurance and the support of Isao, Ryu remained steadfast in his resolve to prioritise the lives that could be saved over personal recognition.

"Recognition is not my goal, Mother Yuki. It won't save lives. What truly matters is the impact this medicine can have on those in need. Besides, with you behind it, no one will question its legitimacy," he explained softly, his words carrying a weight of selflessness and determination.

Ryu's voice grew softer, tinged with a mixture of vulnerability and resolve. "I'm just a child, Mother Yuki. Besides, I have Grandpa Dan and my health to focus on, which you know is worsening day by day. We need a faster solution."

With a deep breath, Ryu continued, his eyes filled with a newfound determination. "Mother Yuki, I trust you. I have faith that you will see to it that this discovery is made available to everyone on the planet without any misuse and realises its full potential."

Recognising and deeply respecting Ryu's selfless resolve, Dr. Yuki experienced a burgeoning admiration for his unwavering commitment to the greater good, understanding the depth of his sacrifice and the purity of his intentions.

Dr. Yuki pondered his words, a new respect dawning in her eyes. "Your perspective is undeniably valid. However, have you considered the potential life-altering implications financially? This discovery could secure your future significantly. This could be life-changing for you."

Ryu shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips, his eyes reflecting a maturity far beyond his years. "Mother Yuki, financial rewards are meaningless if I were to succumb to my illness before the completion of the cure; my condition is worsening. Besides, I don't need money.

He continued, "Moreover, material wealth is no longer a priority for me, as my newfound family and their well-being are all that matter. Once I make it through this ordeal, I can earn later. My goal is to become the greatest combat ninja in the world after I recover, watching over and defending the welfare of those in need. My goal in life is to protect people."

Dr. Yuki stood in silent awe, moved by the young boy's selflessness and wisdom. The weight of Ryu's words hung in the air, a testament to his extraordinary character and the profound impact of his discovery.
